America Going to Pot? O'Reilly vs. Stewart
http://screen.yahoo.com/comedy-central/burn-notice-bill-oreilly-marijuana-050000837.html
1. I...I have to let John Stewart's first few words speak for me. Every. Single. Word. That whole first clip where he talks before the 2nd O'Reilly clip...yeah. THIS is why you're King of the Secular Show-Biz Jews, pal! ;)
2. So, yeah, um, pot...I can't ever do it (not with my medication) but I'm curious...where does everyone fall on legalization?

The People's Choice--Facebook's Top 5 Great Authors...by Likes--Thoughts?
At least from my searching for them on the pages with the most likes to their name...leaving aside the J.K. Rowlings, Stephenie Meyers, And Stephen Kings--Shakespeare (surprise!) ranks 1st with 6.8 million, Maya Angelou (surprise...?) is 2nd with over 4 million, Gabriel Garcia Marquez is 3rd with over 3 million, Fyodor Dostoyevsky ranks 4th with 1 million, and Jane "Life Begins at Man and Gossipy Bickering" has 900K. ...Thoughts on what that says about our popular choice in classic authors?

webdiplomacy's facebook presence (PR)
Hi guys, I noticed that webDiplomacy is somewhat non-existent on facebook. Shall we do anything to change that?

As I see both https://www.facebook.com/webdiplomacy and https://www.facebook.com/diplomacy pages do exists and both are kind of dead.

However, the latter one has almost 9 thousand fans, which I assum could worth something. Also I think some PR job could be done on facebook, like posting EoGs there, or interesting games to follow, or SoW thread posts, so outsiders might get interested.

Any opinions / info about the admins of these pages?

I thought someone had converted Kestas' code to run on facebook at one time and we had picked up some players as a result.
rokakoma (19138 D)
27 Dec 13 UTC
I know, but I'm talking about doing more PR activity on these pages, a sort of advirtisement for the site, the game, and the community. And I wanted to know if there's any interest around here to promote ourselves in a way, and if there is, what way is that exactly?
Draugnar (0 DX)
27 Dec 13 UTC
Do you know who owns those two pages? I'd "like" them and post to the wall if it was one of us to help promote the site.
rokakoma (19138 D)
27 Dec 13 UTC
No I don't, but I write to both pages in facebook immidiately, and I hope the owners are around. Then will see how to move on.

Also we can create a new one anytime, but until we cannot figure out what kind of regular content can we provide, it's kind of pointless. Hence I'm eager to hear about ideas.
joshuavoskamp (480 D)

Perhaps a "live" ranking system? I.e. The top 100 players based on points earned in the last week and/or percentage of games won/drawn/survived/defeated in the last week? (Week being interchangeable with any reasonable amount of time). The point of this being that a player who has say fifty thousand points has to keep playing to stay at the top (can't just quit for several years).
joshuavoskamp (480 D)
27 Dec 13 UTC
Or, better yet, systematic tournament-style play? Say for example a live anonymous WTA (possibly gunboat) game every Saturday afternoon? I would see the Facebook page as a way to spread information about the game--somehow make winning a game a facebook-post-worthy achievement?
rokakoma (19138 D)
27 Dec 13 UTC
both ideas are great, the latter is covered by thread=1084130, but that doesn't mean we cannot share the information on both places.

The more content we can share on FB the better I guess. With the restriction not to share too much of course.

However advertising games there assumes those who are subscribed will actually play. But what about those, who haven't already liked the FB page, but they see the posts (through friends)

I would love to create content for them, to direct their attention to the game, so they want to know more. Just imagine you hear about a new board game for the first time, I suppose a scheduled live game, or a top100 list will not make you curious.

@rokakoma

The thing is, Bro, that his sentiment is not unwarranted. Plenty of us dislike the face-book.

The original poster was hoping, I believe to survey user opinion on the issue. Numbat responded both succinctly and honestly.

While you've every right to disagree with him, it is my belief that those of us who dislike the face-book are actually doing you a service by not listing our motives here. You're doubtlessly familiar with them already, as are others. If you really wish to lend us a forum to air our grievances, then perhaps we will oblige. I seldom pass an opportunity to bemoan the rather unfortunate web site.

After all, why provide content to Schmuck Zuckerburg? Why line his billionaire pockets? He seems to prove time and again to have little interest in serving others - enemies, friends *OR* benefactors.

Wouldn't we be better off establishing our own social media or, failing that, to link with one where we could better control the content? I'm hardly against advertising on the face-book if we must, but as for providing content, I genuinely don't see the business case.

I doubt that it will harm very much if we do so, but it is also unlikely to help very much.

@Al Swearengen:

your thoughts make sense and I guess your post is THE way to communicate those thoughts. I have no problem if this community refuses to be present on facebook, moreover that's why I created this thread to measure the willingness and possible solutions on the idea.

While I disagree with you on many levels, I respect the way you communicate your views. However, I strongly refuse to discuss anything with anyone whose argument is "fuck [whatever the issue is]", hence I'm sure you understand my reaction to Numbat's comment.

@rokakoma

No trouble at all, my friend, and I absolutely support what you're doing. This site would be improved with greater traffic, and obviously marketing is a big part of generating this.

The last time that I was consulted on the topic of marketing a video game, my opinion at the time was that we are much better off sniping fans from other video games than on attempting to interest a general audience in our particular strategy game.

Maybe lure people in from other gaming communities? My suggestion is to post a thread asking people to pledge to write a review on a gaming forum, or post an ad on the discussion forums for other strategy games.

If you need assistance I'd be happy to write a couple of paragraphs of advertising copy. Please advise.

Why don't we have a Twitter feed that broadcasts all of the results and has links to all of our forum discussions so they can start trending and we can all become infamous if we say real outrageous things ..... then webdip can have a fan page on Facebook so that we can all like it and post messages and talk to all of the people that have been banned, oh how we will laugh.
We can then find out personal things about each other from Facebook which we can use to poke fun at each other, the future is TwitBook. We can twitter LIVE games that will fill in a matter of seconds, we can then rip into people if they CD and block them all over again on 2 more sites if and when they are offensive.
Don'tcha know, I'm talkin' 'bout a revolution, it sounds like a whisper.
Nice rant :)

tendmote (100 D(B))

People should just recommend this site to people they think might enjoy it. It's got a good mix of players as it is. If there were more live games available at any given time that would be an improvement. But there's really no benefit to getting as many random Facebook people as possible onto the site. Consider the effect on the forum here...
Because the forum is a pretty fantastic place right now? It's at least 60% populated by right-wing trolls.
tendmote (100 D(B))

I was initially appalled by the forum, but I've learned to deal with it. Relatively speaking, it's as fantastic as it gets right now, better than Reddit, less overcrowded than Slashdot, and less psychotic than anything that requires Facebook to sign in (so much for the non-anonymity argument.)
steephie22 (182 D(S))
28 Dec 13 UTC
This is the only forum I can survive on, really. I don't even know which side is the right wing.
A big part of what keeps me from being more engaged in this forum is the great deal of trolling that goes on- people post outrageous statements they either don't really agree with or only vaguely do, just to see people argue against it. Once they argue against it, the OP puffs his/her chest out triumphantly, admonishing the foolish forum dwellers for being intellectually invested in their opinions. It's pretty tedious, and it discourages people (at least myself) to try to offer counter-arguments, because

A) They aren't going to read and synthesize them, and their post was never a serious argument one way or another.

or maybe

B) If they are actually invested in the topic, they rely on ad hominem attacks to silence their detractors, instead of tackling their actual arguments.

The really unfortunate thing is that these users seem to be the minority of forum posters, they are just particularly vocal. Other boards police these users (such as Reddits' recently controversial decision to disallow climate deniers from posting on r/science).
