@Chaqa ... there's a picture in the article. It looks like a bomb, I guess, but it also looks like a thousand other things besides a bomb.

Momentarily putting aside low-hanging fruit such as police brutality and incompetence and an education system that tries to do the bare minimum beyond force-feeding children Ritalin as they take standardized tests, can we all take a moment to wonder at the sheer technological illiteracy these luddites must have possessed for this situation to have arisen. 7-segment digital clocks have been ubiquitous for close to 50 years. Do people truly have no concept of what one looks like and are so confused as to why anyone would make one that they are physically incapable of thinking it is anything except a bomb? Do these people call the police every morning when awaken by their alarm clock? Do average people have even the faintest understanding that the computers they use on a daily basis to share at kittens and send dick pics are made by real people?

Shame on the engineering teacher for showing such disregard to a bright student showing interest in STEM. Shame on the administration for having absolutely 0 knowledge of the students in their school. And shame on the police, who failed at absolutely everything save for avoiding the temptation to shoot everything that moved. Every adult involved in this incident should be fired.

That was a failure to educate both teachers and police in what was a bomb. A timing mechanism doesn't do anything without an explosive. Clearly there wasn't an explosive and it didn't look like anything more than a circuit board with a digital display. Maybe they should remove all the computers since they had circuit boards.

Now a white boy building a breeder nuclear reactor in his mother's shed that emitted enough radioactivity to become a Superfund clean up site doesn't even get a slap on the wrist. Nor his mother that disposed on radioactive material in the regular trash.

Edit - Hahn got a minor slap on the wrist, but he didn't face the level of criminal prosecution for even theft charges.
