Can We Get Rid of Black Friday?
The latest viral video is a brawl between shoppers. The latest "news" is that Black Friday sales are down… wonder why, you created Cyber Monday. And people don't want to get in brawls while shopping for Christmas.

I've learned a few things. Not many, of course. I'm sure a bunch of you would back that up. For example, I can't spell kat. Catt. My dog just burped and I lost my train of thought. Cat.

Here's a Controversial Thread for You
So let's play a word game, shall we? It's a very simple game. I type a sentence, you post with your word or phrase that you think fits best. You can go to any extreme you like that doesn't make me want to punch you in the face. If "krellin-like" is your best answer, go for it. It'd probably be mine too.

Here's the question: How _______ does a nation have to be to try and execute people for creating a video across the world that didn't even make theaters?

Yeah, but to me James Bond is not so much about remaining faithful to the book, they already abandoned that principle at the very beginning and I think that's also the best. Just turning books into movie scripts is a waste of time if you ask me, that's why every time they try to reinvent "the Count of Monte Cristo" they fail. I really liked where they'd taken James Bond after Lazenby played him. They broke the fourth wall there and I think the producers realized they had to stick closer to the original on that point.
I hated DAD, but they came back really strongly with Casino Royale and I'd hoped they'd stick to that style for Daniel Craig, but this was all too much...

I enjoyed the mod/football ref comment in the original op, as I know both so well.
I also know that you can critique the hell out of a ref, but until you try to do the job will you understand when it is done well and when it is done poorly.
Wow, I'm out of practice, eh? I'm biting on troll bait...

Anyways, I also love how it devolved into a talk about James Bond, also a fave of mine.

redhouse's reason for disliking the new Bond: "He doesn't get drunk enough."
redhouse1938 (429 D)
27 Nov 12 UTC
You must have misunderstood me there 2WL, it's quite the contrary, I dislike the fact that he does get drunk in Skyfall, whereas usually, due to his shaken, not stirred Martinis, he doesn't. Sorry, my bad.
2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))
27 Nov 12 UTC
I think that the whole Bond "death" scene where he was getting drunk on that island was much more realistic and humanizing than simply showing up to work the next day completely forgetting that M had ordered the shot that nearly killed him.
redhouse1938 (429 D)
27 Nov 12 UTC
Ow I agree 2WL. It's just that I don't want to see James Bond being realistic and human. If I want to see a movie about human beings I'll watch Rain Man.
Draugnar (0 DX)
27 Nov 12 UTC
@red - Actually, those of us who *read* know plenty about 007. Fleming built the character up over the course of the novels he wrote and Skyfall just used that info.

I won't argue your interpretations of the characters as those are just your opinion.

Adn the real reason to shake, not stir, a martini is to bruise the alcohol. A martini is shaken in ice and for such a short time it doesn't add any significant water to the drink.
Draugnar (0 DX)
27 Nov 12 UTC
And try reading the books where Bond is often broken and *very* human.
redhouse1938 (429 D)
27 Nov 12 UTC
Yeah Draug, those of us who *read* would've known my counterarguments to what you just mentioned. I actually do read James Bond novels, and I want that experience to be different than the movies. Also, my interpretation on why you'd stir and not shake a wodka martini on the rocks is quite correct, I assure you. As a chemist, I can also assure you that alcohol does not "bruise", it is a very robust molecule that can sustain blocks of ice hitting it for an extended period.

Hey I'm currently off-duty as a mod, and, in that capacity, I'd like to ask you all to calm the fuck down.

I'm not even going to read what is going on. Why? Because it doesn't matter. I can say with 100% certainty that whatever these 45 replies pertain to is totally without merit.

But Thucydides, you ask, how do you know? You said yourself you didn't read any of it.

Ahh, but remember the source of the readings - a board game website. Ergo, relax. Maybe put on some Tchaikovsky and sip some winter craft beer. Maybe watch a documentary. I'm sure you won't give a shit within in like 30 minutes.
redhouse1938 (429 D)

Thucy, I've been laughing at this for awhile.
Draugnar (0 DX)
27 Nov 12 UTC
@Thucy - GFY. We are talking James Bond here. It is *very* important.

@Red - I guess it comes down to the fact that I enjoy the movies that are more like the books (and CR was so spot on with the book in over all feel, that it damn near toppled Goldfinger from the #1 spot in the movies). I hated Brosnan's last movie with a passion ebcause it became SciFi bond. The only movie worse than it in the end was Moonraker - Bond in a space shuttle. So I guess it comes down to what you are looking for in a Bond film.

I'll defer to you on the martini, but I don't see how shaking versus stirring would alter the total alcohol content in the glass when one presumes the entire contents of the shaker is filtered into the martini glass anyhow, leaving behind just the ice in the strainer. My bruised comment wasjust what I had read over the years. I always assumed the shaking n the ice would chill the drink better as more of the alcohol would pass over the ice and the energy in the alcohol would be pulled out.
redhouse1938 (429 D)
27 Nov 12 UTC
Lol. Alright, I'll answer that. And yes, JB is very important.

"I hated Brosnan's last movie with a passion ebcause it became SciFi bond."
Yup, I did too (I mentioned my DAD hating)

"The only movie worse than it in the end was Moonraker - Bond in a space shuttle."
I honestly think the build-up to that event was better than the build up to DAD's end, so I forgave Bond going to space and actually quite liked Moonraker, all be it in a different way than the other Bonds.

"I always assumed the shaking n the ice would chill the drink better as more of the alcohol would pass over the ice and the energy in the alcohol would be pulled out."
The energy stored as heat in the drink in its entirety would be used to heat the ice, yes. The most important effects of shaking rather than stirring has nothing to do with changing the alcohol content, but increasing the water content: you can take more sips from the same drink while taking the same amount of alcohol, which means it's a more careful variant than the stirred variant. The second effect is that your drink as a whole cools down more, because a larger surface of ice is exposed to the drink. James Bond drinks a watered down Martini to stay sober (it's also very important that he does: what if you have to shoot a guy from long range after a night at the bar? You can't screw that up, Bond knows this)
Thucydides (864 D(B))
27 Nov 12 UTC
Oh we're talking bond eh. Who thinks they missed a huge opportunity in Skyfall to ecplain the numerous Bonds by revealing James Bond to be a code name? Instead they doubled down and showed Craig's Bond as having the actual James Bond name, which solves no plot holes
Draugnar (0 DX)
27 Nov 12 UTC
But honestly, how much difference does a couple extra milliliters of water to the same amount of alcohol make? 5 shots is 5 shots, even if they have an extra 15 ml of water added to them.

Re: DAD. I thought it was a great movie up until he goes to the ice palace. The opening and his capture were excellent, and even the disappearing Vanquish was acceptable in how it was presented. I even tolerated the obvious digital dive from from the cliff by Jinx. But then he had to go wind surfing on a mini tidal wave.

MR was much the same. It showed promise up until the arrival at the space station when every thing went Star Wars laser gun. I mean, come on. Hand held lasers that have the power to blow things up and kill people in 1979? NASA have space marines? It was impressive that they had a very realistic shuttle launch and flight before the real shuttle ever launched, but Broccoli and company were always good at being bleeding edge in vehicles and devices (Little Nellie is one of my all time favorites) but the laser guns went a bit to far.
Draugnar (0 DX)
27 Nov 12 UTC
@Thucy - Remember, Craig's Bond is a reboot. It isn't a continuation (although there are some anachronisms like the DB5 having an ejector seat and machine guns and him somehow having it despite being born after Goldfinger was made).
I"m pretty sure he was born before I was made :p haha
Octavious (2701 D)
27 Nov 12 UTC
@ Thucy: James Bond is a Time Lord. I thought everyone knew this.

@ Draug: Would you say NASA space marines and 70's laser guns were more or less realistic than that poker game in CR?
Draugnar (0 DX)
27 Nov 12 UTC
I said Goldfinger, not goldfinger0303. No numbers and a cpaital 'G'. :-P

@Oct - Laser guns and space marines were less realistic. The poker game in CR had some odds that were nigh on impossible, but I have seen a royal flush beat quads for real, so not impossible. The biggest problem with the poker game was the final hand was resolved incorrectly. It should have been Bond and LeChiffre resolved for the highest side pot and then the others would have mucked, not wanting to reveal how badly they played. But that doesn't make for good drama.

Can Russia Spawn Two Fleets in St. Petersburg at the same time on each coast?
So I was playing as russia and during the build phase it allowed me to build two units in St. Petersburg, one fleet on the north coast and one fleet on the south coast. It allowed me to press "ready" but I didn't because I wasn't sure if it would cancel my build or something. can someone please shed some light on this? Thanks!

My apologies to the community
“You can't make alliances for reasons outside a game, such as because you are friends, relatives or in return for a favour in another game. This is known as metagaming and is against the rules because it gives an unfair advantage to those involved. If you are worried that you can't stab someone because you want to stay friends, then that's fair enough but you can't join a game with them.”
