Hurricane Sandy
I know a lot of people (myself included) are about to lose power for at least a few days, maybe longer. Is it possible that the mods could pause all games for those who will be afflicted, or maybe pause all games and make the users unpause them? Estimates are that at least 30 million people will be without power, probably more, in the northeast US.

US vs. UK: Parliamentary or Constitutional Govt.?
I've had a fun time debating it well enough with some political science major friends, so I thought I'd throw it out here and see what comes up--a Parliamentary system like the UK's, or a Constitutional system like the US's, which do you prefer, and why...moreover, assuming everyone here is in one or the other (and not, say, living under a dictatorship) if you could change your country's system to be more like the other's...would you?

A little surprised that France kept attacking me despite my obvious attempt to confront the eventual winner, Italy. Any explanation Dharm?

Ann Coulter and the R-Word--What a Vapid, Self-Centered, Despicable, Stupid B----!
I'm sorry, you can criticize Obama all you like...but you DO NOT DARE insult the mentally handicapped and then whine that the "PC Police" are after you...no, I'm sorry, but someone were to call me a kike, and I was offended, that's not me being overly politically-correct it's YOUR being incendiary, insipid, vile, cruel, and altogether an example of the sort of person we do NOT need on the air waves or in this country WHATSOEVER.

I trust none of you are retarded enough to vote one way or another because of a celeb endorsement - but will it change your purchasing habits towards the celebs products?

Manti Te'o… Notre Dame LB… probably going to be a top pick in the NFL. Yet he does things like this so often.

"I have a close friend whose entire bookshelf is filled with books that are all biased towards one certain political party. Of course there is nothing wrong with that. However, I am inclined to think that the more biased books one buys, the less likely that person is to genuinely read a book written by someone with a different opinion. Just recently I came across a great new book series called Opposing Viewpoints. This series has around 100 published books, each covering a certain controversial topic. Within the chapters are articles written by accomplished people who have drastically different viewpoints on a certain subject concerning the book's topic. It's a great way to challenge yourself, have a well-rounded opinion, and become a better informed person. Attached is a link which has a list of all the published Opposing Viewpoints books." - Nick Bowlby

Nice one.

The comment i posted was originally made about a TED talk, in which google and facebook filtering of results was discussed (so if you usually click on links to conservative view then eventually all you news sources will be filtered to include mostly those views)

The forum here exposes us to opposing views. But when it disintegrates into name calling a muting of others we censor any opposition, whether by calling them names which implies their veiws are unimportant or by simply muting them entirely (and i admit having muted one or two users)

I have seen studies which suggest that reading oppsing views actually tends to reinforce our own opinions. That the more opposition the more likely ou think the are lying or idiotic. Does disussion and debate here actually change your mind?

Very rarely does the forum change the overall thrust of my view (although it does happen from time to time), but it often expands the debate in my mind and introduces new angles.

Take the recent(ish) Faulklands debate. Until then I genuinely held the view that Argies were decent, reasonable people who had been badly misled by their government into thinking the Faulkland islanders where being oppressed by Britain and would want to be a part of Argentina. Now I know this is not the case and that the Argies are predominantly a bunch of bastards who just want to increase the land they control and to hell with the people who live there.

I would also say that having a bookshelf filled with political books of any colour is not only wrong, but more than a little tragic.

Yes. Tragic. I don't even have a bookshelf. I just keep my porno mags in a stack on the floor.

I couldn't agree more with the comments about how this forum tends to disintegrate into name calling of the opposing view. That said, sometimes the forum does present a challenge to views I held. There are some knowledgeable debaters on here.

I will, I think, be searching out the books the OP recommends.

Anyone know what it means when a game with no messages has the little envelope icon (and shows up as a game I need to look at) ? Is it a bug, or did I miss something?

Troubles in Greece
The situation there is getting quite desperate and....strangely resembles how the Nazi party came to power in Germany. This article is quite disturbing.

Game Cancelled - Dark Summer
Hey all,

So I log in today, and have received a message that a game I was in called dark summer has suddenly been cancelled. I have no idea why? It was a World game that had been ongoing for quite a while. Is anyone able to point me to a reason why this game was cancelled? Or who I can contact to find out? I'm very confused and disappointed as this was an interesting game! Thanks.
