Game Policy Discussion: Non-Inference to on-going games even if there was a cheater
Hi everybody :D This a very inflammable yet serious thread so I will use all my patience to suppress the troll inside me. So you do your best at the same time as well...

I do start this discussion, as the game gives me a responsibility to keep the server fun. So, here is the policy of the game that takes away the fun of the game which I would like to discuss:

At what point does a religion become too watered down?
Most religions in the world have holy text that describes events as though they are factual. However, some of these events simply can not have happened (example, Croesus being whisked away to Hyperborea). For the ardent believer who wants to maintain the faith but cannot reconcile fact with "fiction," the only option is to downgrade the "history" to metaphor. At what point does religious "history" become too watered down as metaphor for the religion to still be worth believing in?

Having played Mechwarrior 2 and 4, I have decided to look into the novels. I know there are a few sci-fi fans here, so I was wondering what books are best to start with. I've read that Stackpole's are a good base (4th Succession War and Clan invasion), but a couple of the reviews on Amazon seem ominous. Sow what do other people think?

Cheating-free live games night
Details inside.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))

This is your new moderator trying out a new idea.

When I first started playing Diplomacy on this site, I had played a lot of live games, gunboat and full press, but over the summer, there was an increased in cheaters playing live games or so it seemed to me. They were playing a lot of live gb games and they had unbelievable alliances, but more importantly they made perfect spectacular supports without any prior indicative support moves (a support that failed because the unit to be supported did something else). It was rather frustrating, and so I stopped playing live games.

I miss playing live games.

There is something to be said for playing live games. The adrenaline pump is a heck of a lot more intense than a 36-hr game.

So:

We, the moderators, will announce specific nights where at least one of us will be online to ensure that there will be no cheating in live gunboat games. If you think there is cheating going on, then email us at [email protected] with the following specific information: your handler, which game you are in, which countries you think are cheating, and the SPECIFIC moves (there must be more than one move involved) that made you think they are cheating. We will then check the game out to make sure everything is on the straight and narrow. Please do not post cheating accusations in the forum.

Quick example of an email you would send to us: I, Mr. XXX, in game XXXXX, think that Russia and France are cheating because they did this: XXXX supported XXXX to XXXX in Autumn 1902, XXXX supported XXXX to XXXX in Spring 1904, and so forth.

We want to know which nights they are most likely to play a live game on and if people would appreciate this once-in-a-while event. We will then announce the night a day or two ahead of time, and we will try our best to make it a fun night for everyone.

I realize that most of the complaints you get about live games are cheating complaints, but most of the problems are, from what I've seen, more closely related to CDs. So, having mods around who would react to CDs by immediately booting the power and finding a replacement would be, at least to me, even more helpful as far as making the live games fun.

This is an awesome idea. I would also mention this in the advertise live games thread Zultar as I know some of the live game players only check that thread in the forum.

I just copied and pasted to the live game thread.
I will bring the issue of CDing to the mods and see what they think of it.

My personal policy is to cancel/draw if there is a CD within the first two/three years. I am not sure how the other mods feel about it. I think we all dislike cheaters and how they ruin the game, but the issue of CDing is not as straight-forward. So, let me take that to them and see if we have a consensus.

Please don't make any sort of cheating accusations on this forum.
Please contact the mods by e-mail, wait 5 days, wait another 5 days, then another, eventually just give up reporting cheats.

I forgot to ask which night of the week YOU would like to see this event happen. Is it Monday night when you have to do something fun to start the week?
Is it Wednesday night where things are in a lull?
Is it Friday or Saturday night where that cheap bottle of pretentious wine just isn't enough?

Let us know when you are most likely to play a live game.

Your subtle hints that there is cheating going on must not be made on this forum, you know you will be punished and spoken down to, can I remind you that you made a similar accusation on November 17th 1998 and it still hasn't been forgotten or forgiven.. Now I am compelled to find out what live game you are playing in and see for myself the dirty little scheming cheaters !!

If you're using the English language please learn to spell words like humour correctly, calling yourself American is not a get out for being ignorant, if the rest of the World can do it so can you
If you're using the English language, please learn to use basic grammatical structures (such as commas and parentheses) to avoid run-on sentences. Making baseless attacks on others' perfectly legitimate alternative spellings of words is not an excuse for writing like a third grader with Tourette's. If the rest of the world can do it, so can you.

zultar (4180 DMod(P))
13 May 12 UTC
Ok, so I'm just doing a trial run. I will be on the hunt tonight for cheaters.
If you suspect a live game has cheaters in them, please email the mod at [email protected] with the following specific information:

Your handler, which game you are in, which countries you think are cheating, and the SPECIFIC moves (there must be more than one move involved) that made you think they are cheating. We will then check the game out to make sure everything is on the straight and narrow. Please do not post cheating accusations in the forum.

Good idea, can't say I've seen anything yet; but if nothing else, the threat of patrolling and serious action ought to keep cheating to a minimum tonight.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
13 May 12 UTC
Ok, trial run wasn't too bad.

Hopefully everyone had a good WebDip night. :-)
Was the cheating kept to a minimum? Did you feel a little safer playing live games?

Please let me know.
NigeeBaby (100 D(G))

An important point is that usually meta-gamers are pretty rubbish so even ehen working together they don't always do well and in that situation nobody complains. It's usually when they are actually winning that people get annoyed. Most of these guys I've come across seem to be young kids having a bit of fun. They don't consider working together to beat the opposition breaking the rules, they seem to think it's great fun.
Fair play to you Zultar for actually raising the issue though because it is an annoying waste of 3 hours.
Here's another challenge, convincing people to either play in a gunboat they've just signed up to or getting them to stay in the game they are obviously going to lose, so many people CD.
And another thing, what are your thoughts on cancelling gunboats just because one country doesn't show up. One night this happened three times, we cancelled the first two but in the end I just wanted to have a game, by then it was 2 hours later than when I had started playing.
Maybe if we had Gunboat CDs we could have a link that appears automatically on the forum asking other players to join for free to take their place, how cool would that be
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
13 May 12 UTC
Yeah, I remember the problems with CDing as well.

Alright, how about this: I will make a thread at one point in the near future. ANY game advertised in this thread will be canceled or drawn if there is a CD within the first two years, and each game will be checked vigorously for cheaters as well. That's the understanding for posting games in that particular thread and for joining games there.

Who's loving this idea? :-)
TheFlyingBoat (2743 D)
13 May 12 UTC
Why couldn't you pause processing and force CD the NMR and allow us to find a replacement?
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
13 May 12 UTC
That's also a good idea, but how would you implement the finding of a replacement and keep anonymity?
I am very open to this idea if we can agree to a plan
TheFlyingBoat (2743 D)
13 May 12 UTC
Just have the game creator post on the forum with a request for a new person to join. The person clicks the link to the game, joins it, and voila!

I understand the need to replace CD's in a live game asap, but doesnt that also provide an unfair advantage for people who have made moves based on those cd's. some people adjust their position to meet the changes of an evolving board, where perhaps Italy has left the game so Austria moves out of Trieste only a year later to have some mod call for a replacement for Italy, and since its no in game messaging you cant go on the forum and tell a mod to stop advertising because it would stifle his or her position. I feel this issue violates the policy of ABSOLUTELY NO PRESS, which by all rights should include going to the forums scrapping for replacements to screw people over.
brainbomb (290 D)
13 May 12 UTC
some noob opportunist will jump in the game, mop up on people and get an inflated result because of pandering for replacement players. that seems almost worse than the cd in the first place.
