A good, honest person does that. There should be some provision coded in that prevents shit like that.

Yes, he's entitled to it, the site does nothing to stop him, it's not against the rules so if he wants to do it, he can. But it doesn't stop me from publicly shaming him.

As much as I hate CDs and NMRs, I do not think it is appropriate for the games to be automatically canceled or anything like that. That's why we have the vote buttons. That's why we have passworded games. That's why we played ranked GR games. I think we all should have higher standards and to punish/deny those who don't, but the site itself cannot and should not do that. We as individuals should hold each other accountable.

Thanks for the advice. I guess I should've somehow forseen that the Russian was going to abandon his perfectly sound position. But thanks for the move to Brest, that was a big incentive for me to move to the Med.

Sorry if I sounded harsh. It's just frustrating to sit at the other side of the board, fighting desperately and watching him grow without any resistance. Even before the Russian left, he didn't do much to stop Italy neither.

My apologies. You're right, it's just so frustrating especially since it's not the fault of either one of us. I NMRed at a crucial phase on another, more interseting game trying to figure how to salvage this mess. D'oh.

How common is it to actually get a live game with no NMR or CDs? I think I've only played 1 where that didn't happen.

Gee, what a nice site. I come back after some time away to play a game of Diplomacy. I wanted to play a game. I finally find a quick one that is original Dip which isn't sodding well password protected, and I start to play. I'm not going to not have a game just someone CDs. That would have been the case even if I was in the position of the CD giving the win to a different player. I just wanted to play a game, I didn't carry on playing cos I thought the victory would be grand or something.

@Vaftrudner: next time you would do well to put in the game title, "Draw or cancel if more than 1 person CD's" or something like that.
@Cecil: I understand what you mean, but to many on this site it is not gamesmanlike if you capitalise on CD's to win. But then again, Dip was never about gamesmanship. It is about winning. You win.

When one power never submits an order, then abandons in 1901 and everyone else votes to cancel, it might be your first clue. But a win is a win is a win.

Celticfox, didn't we play one just the other day? Anyway, invitational or expensive games tend to be much better, it's why I often try to set them up. It's hard to get good, reliable players at the same time, though.

Cecil Lizard, I'm sorry if I'm too harsh. If you don't play often I guess you haven't experienced it so much, but this stuff happens again and again and again. It's so tiring to play unbalanced games because of CDs. You said that you just wanted a game - well, so did I, but I don't consider a game with three successive CDs a real game. For the one who didn't benefit, it just becomes a chore of putting in orders and watching others grow. Please consider the experience of other players the next time.

@Vaft yep that was the only one where people haven't CD'ed at some point. I understand it can be difficult to get a live game going with reliable people. My schedule is a little crazy so I never know if I'll be able to play until that night and not always then.

Thank God that my circadian rhythm is basically a free jazz drum solo, or I would never be able to play with you yanks. It's 6 in the morning over here.

Oh it's not the time necessarily. I still have other commitments to rl things. Having friends over, spending time with my husband, family, etc etc

I'm impressed that anyone can keep up with Dip and still have a real life. Last time I had a job, I quit playing, because I kept missing deadlines and I just didn't have the energy or time to devote to my games. It's good that I'm back at school now, I have eons of free time.

Hey Vaftrudner, I take issue with your (admittedly brash) ultimatum to never play low pot anon games again. I think you mean non-password protected games, because Celtic and you and I all played an enjoyable game the other day that was low bet and anon (granted the player list was published).

@Celtic, glad you look at that gunboat we had the other day fondly. To answer your question, not often, hence why I started a thread for players to sign they'll agree to etiquette as a go-to list of gun boaters. =)

It's not an ultimatum really, because I don't see who it would be directed against. It's just not worth it to have to sit through three horrible games for every good game. I didn't include non-password games in what I wrote, because they're really only semi-anon anyway. I'll happily play 5 games, and I play some of Sarg's, as long as there is some quality control and accountability :)

I'm sorry, I honestly didn't know it is considered ungamesmanshiply. If I had I would have drawn. I guess I should have realised that that is what you are expected to do in that situation, but I'm a little slow, plus I was tired. Now I know I will in the future.
