http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=66064 it looks like there are multiple accounts of a same person here. Many users AFK, or making way too stupid moves to belive. I'm talking about a whole America and Turkey with India. Please, investigate, cause the game goes fail because of that.

To those of you in the path of hurricane Irene...
...who's preparing for this storm?
StevenC. (1047 D(B))
27 Aug 11 UTC
Unfortunately for me, I live on Long Island near the south shore and it is probably too late to leave the island so my family and I are taking extra precautions...

Stay safe Steve. I got candles, a couple gallons of water, enough food (that doesn't need to be in the fridge) for two days, and a bottle of Jamison.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

When is it supposed to hit and is there expected damage or is everyone really just freaking out about possible power cuts lol.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
27 Aug 11 UTC
If by preparing, you mean me having a HURRICANE PARTY, then YES!
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
27 Aug 11 UTC
But, in all seriousness, by the time it reaches me, it will barely be a tropical storm. For those actually in the path of a Cat 1/2, be safe!

I am in Vermont and I have never been told by the weather station of a hurricane warning.. That is just unheard of, I almost shit my pants when I heard it over the radio. 60 mph winds. I live in the woods. >.> Its gonna be a long few days..
StevenC. (1047 D(B))
27 Aug 11 UTC
It's gonna be a strong cat. 1 when it reaches long island. Gonna be moving to a shelter later in the day. I just feel bad for the people in NYC though. It's going to be even worse there....wait....is-is it raining?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
27 Aug 11 UTC
lol

Actually, It's still a Cat 1 when it passes by me. This Hurricane Party may be a little more "extreme" then I had initially intended.

Good luck to EVERYONE who's in this path. I was nervous earlier this week as I WAS the expected target but I was fortunate at your expense. I wish you all the best and stay safe. Remember, the MOST important thing about a hurricane is to stay safe! Most deaths and injuries happen after a storm because people get curious or just don't use common sense.
FirstApple (100 D(B))

@abge - don't underestimate a Cat 1 !!!! They've done plenty of damage here in Florida.

Yeah, my roommate and I are going shopping now.
SGrabowski (547 D)

I work at a convenience store and I love this kind of weather - it really brings out the stupid in people! For example: Yesterday someone bought 4 gallons of milk from my store. "But SGrabowski," you might say "if the hurricane is bad, they won't be able to get out and will need that milk!" To that I say: If the hurricane is that bad that you can't get to the store to get milk, you probably won't have power at home, which means your refrigerator will not be working, which means: All your milk is belong to spoil!
Good luck from the safety of the pacific northwest. I was visiting family in NJ a week and a half ago. It's weird to think since I left there's been an earthquake AND a hurricane.

Be safe, all, and remember that even if it becomes a tropical storm, Irene is huge and setting a large amount of ocean water into motion. The storm surge is going to be pretty crazy in coastal areas... Just ask North Carolina.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

on milk - ever heard of coolers? we do that all the time on the gulf coast. 4 gal is a lot but buying milk isnt that weird
lol, Cat 1's #Katrinaveteran

My friend wrote up a hurricane survival guide for his Princeton buddies, I'll c/p
To my northern friends preparing for hurricane Irene, some advice from one who's seen a few hurricanes:

Basically what all this boils down to is "Be prepared to be without electricity for a long time" If your area doesn't get anything worse than tropical storm force winds (i.e. you are on the edge of the storm) then you probably won't be out of power for more than a few days to a week and you might even get power back the same day, but if you get even category 1 hurricane force winds and your town has above-ground power lines, you could easily be without power for more than week. Another danger is if there's flooding, then flood waters can contaminate the municipal water supplies. That probably won't happen, but it's a possibility you should be prepared for.

What to buy before the storm: Water (the super-cheap gallon jugs), non-perishable food, Gasoline (gas station pumps don't work without electricity so fill up any cars before the storm), Cash (ATMs also don't work without electricity), Toilet paper, Fresh batteries for flashlights, Chocolate (because who doesn't love chocolate, and you need something to occupy you during the storm)

1-2 days before the storm: Try to use up perishable foods in your fridge/freezer. For example, if you have lots of eggs (which are perishable), bake a cake (which is less perishable), etc. Make sure you have the items listed above. If you have a battery or hand-crank radio, get it out and see if it still works. Figure out what's the safest room in the house in case of a tornado.

The day before the storm:

move inside everything that you have outside that's not bolted to the ground or super heavy, e.g. potted plants, lawn furniture, bird feeders, etc. Move any cars (which should now have full gas tanks) into a covered area if possible, if not possible hope for the best.

Fill plastic containers with water and put as many as you can fit in your freezer. This should keep the freezer cold for at least 2 days without electricity, and in the rare event that the water supply is corrupted you can drink them.

Another thing people sometimes do to ensure a supply of clean water is to fill up their bathtubs right before the storm and stop the drain. This is if you are expecting to get hit really hard by the storm, or if you know your town is prone to flooding.

If you have really large picture windows, or other vulnerable points in your house, you might consider taping them or putting some plywood up, but that's really mostly if you are expecting hurricane force winds.

If you have a landline, and an old corded phone (NOT cordless handset), you might want to make sure it's plugged in and working. Normally landlines still work even when power is out, but phones with wireless handsets may not work without electricity. If you get a storm of any decent strength, cell phones will not work at all so don't plan on relying on them.

During the storm: Don't play in the storm (too much :P), definitely don't climb trees even though it's really fun. Listen to the radio for updates on conditions in your area like tornado sightings, flooding etc. If you go to bed while power is out, be sure to turn off the lights so that they don't wake you up if power suddenly comes back on.

Getting Forcasts and Information
Useful websites for tracking the storm: www.nch.noaa.gov www.crownweather.com
Particularly useful on crown weather is the "Storm Wind Swath" maps.

BE CAREFUL WHEN CHECKING FORCASTS FOR YOUR AREA ONLINE. Many online weather forcasting services will give you what would be your forcast if there were no hurricane. www.wunderground.com will give excellent area-specific hurricane condition forcasts, but normally not until roughly the day before the storm (before then they'll just give you the forcast without hurricane). The National Weather Service also gives good hurricane condition forcasts Their website is www.weather.gov (NOT www.weather.com, which is the Weather Channel, whose forcasts even in normal conditions I find to be wildly innacurate)

"If you go to bed while power is out, be sure to turn off the lights so that they don't wake you up if power suddenly comes back on."

I've heard that if people leave all their lights on so they know when power returns, this can cause a huge drain on the system when the power companies try and get the power back on, possibly causing further power outage. So another reason to not leave all your lights on.

Good luck all!

About the bathtub thing - sometimes your water pumping may rely on electricity.

if this is the case or if you do not know if this is the case you should probably fill up the bathtub - not to drink, but to fill your toilet tanks so you can flush.

kind of important. lol.

and get candles, card games, acoustic musical instruments, and battery powered radios, these are the keys to not losing your mind especially as you weather the hurricane which may pass thru at night - i dont recommend sleeping through a hurricane lol.

good advice though i agree with it.

if you have a gas stove hurray for you you can cook things.

if not - get used to room temperature cambells lol..

and yeah you can definitely get a cooler and keep a few of your not yet eaten perishables in there a little longer too as you attempt to get them eaten.

and not to insult anyone's intelligence but if the storm gets really intense and suddenly stops, that's the fucking eye and you probably shouldnt go outside on account of lightning, tornadoes, and the sudden and extreme force that comes right after without a lot of warning.

it's eerie...

Also, if you have a washing machine, fill it with water too and then stop the cycle when it's full. The water in the bathtub can run out rather quickly!

And after the storm, be VERY CAREFUL about driving or walking through water. It can get a lot deeper than you expect real fast AND there could be downed power lines which could potentially eletrocute you.

^ And snakes and viscious ants that literally gnaw your legs off and other fun diseases. Dont step in the water unless you are like swimming out of your house god forbid.

And yeah unless you see another car of your same height drive through a puddle and make it dont try it. lol. at least thats my rule.

A few years back I lost my van to deep water after Tropical Storm Faye (it wasn't even a hurricane but it flooded worse than most I'd ever seen)

Thanks Thucy. These are all helpful suggestions. But to be honest, I am seeing that a lot of people where I live are not taking this cat 1 seriously. I went to the local high school I used to attend as it was turned into a red cross run shelter. Turns out that there is STILL a lot of room. Very few houses are boarded up. The only indication of any seriousness is the supermarkets are running out of water and non perishables.

The only thing I'm worried about is how to play my games if I don't have power or access to the net!!! Cleaned up the yard or potential weapons of mass destruction (lawn furniture and such). Bathtub is filled (40 gallons, each flush is 1 gallon). Many bottles of water ready. Canned fruit, bread, peanut butter and pop-tarts ready. Windup radio and flashlights ready. We lost 6 trees to Bob in 91 so we are ready to get more firewood now. Good Luck everyone and if I can't play, DO NOT ATTACK ME!!!
Listen to President Eden. He and I are both from Louisiana.

Across Long Island Sound. Man, I'm bored. Hope it hits already.
In DC right now. We're supposed to have tropical force winds and a few inches of rain, but it doesn't even feel like its a hurricane swiping us. My sympathies for those along the coast (was at the beach just friday morning.)
Well, the reason some people aren't taking it seriously is because it's just a Cat 1. lol. Cat 1s aren't too bad. You want to board up and what not, but the main thing is that the power will be out for a while. This ain't no Katrina.
