Stop bragging about getting drunk and people will stop associating drinkers with drunks.

Very little of this "social drinking" is hanging out and having a beer or two. Binge drinking is out of control and is nothing to celebrate. We'd eradicate a lot of stupidity if drinking wasn't so glorified.
centurion1 (1478 D)

lol, if thats how you want to read into it sure. My father is in no way connected to investment banking whatsoever. Also investment banking isnt something I can go into right away since yah know I have my legally contractual years of service due to the US army since my ROTC scholarship pays for the education I didnt want my parents to have to afford.

But no i am sure my stellar grades, the fact i own a personal portfolio already larger than the average savings of an american citizen. Then theres the fact my parents made something of their lives and carved out an upper middle class income for themselves. How that equates to trust funds im not sure.

And someone who looks down on an individual for drinking in college likely is suffering from an acute case of has no friends.
gramilaj (100 D)

And, it's still you who comes out when you're drunk, even if it's a you you don't like, and it's you who you can't control. Nice people who act like assholes when they're drunk actually have a little asshole in them. They just control that when they're sober. Which is not really a problem, IMO. Most people have a little asshole in them, don't be too scared of that.

centurion, it's sure nice that you started with 7k.

No, I look down on alcoholic children of privilege who think they're big shots and that their lazy ass life of entitlement is the model to succeed for everyone else.

27 Aug 11 UTC
oh people have the right to not drink and i was pretty cautious about it because my great grandfather was an alcoholic and my dad told me it could be in our genes.

my point is college is not about getting good grades and your degree and thats it. if you want to be anything in the world you have to network and socialize. humanity is first and foremost a social species and if you try to be a lone wolf you will suffer for it. no society is truly individualistic anyone who says so is a loner or flat out wrong.

Why do you need an ROTC scholarship if you an 100K investment portfolio? Way to rip off deserving students of much needed scholarship money.
SuperSteve (894 D)
27 Aug 11 UTC
Networking is probably the most important element to success. Drinking can help that. Drinking until you pass out every weekend will eventually be detrimental to success.

Lots of networking does happen over a drink or two... or three... or, well, you get the idea. Still, there's plenty of people that network at religious retreats and the like. I'm not sure that getting along with people necessarily directly correlates to drinking. Plenty of people mess up their careers and personal lives with drinking as well.

Drinking isn't necessarily that big a deal. You really don't have to get drunk in high school. There's plenty of time.
SuperSteve (894 D)

But don't drink and drive. It is just not worth it.

"centurion, it's sure nice that you started with 7k."

lol of my own money it wasnt given to me. I never had a car or a laptop or anything that alot of young kids spend on themselves. I put half of my monthly income into my account. My parents fed me and housed me and loved me it was my job to do the rest.

"No, I look down on alcoholic children of privilege who think they're big shots and that their lazy ass life of entitlement is the model to succeed for everyone else."

You have called me lazy and entitled and alcoholic now. What have you done with your life. where are you going to be in 5 years. I will be in afghanistan. Im sure i will be able to drink and be lazy to my hearts content then.

@centurion, did your parents pay for your college? I'm just pointing out that many people can't save that sort of money to turn into other money. And don't have the paid up education in Finance to turn that money around into more money either. Consider yourself lucky.
centurion1 (1478 D)

I will agree with steve you dont need to drink in high school. its a hassle to be honest.

" Why do you need an ROTC scholarship if you an 100K investment portfolio? Way to rip off deserving students of much needed scholarship money."

what fantasy world do you live in where 100k pays for college anymore. And its for my future. What world do you live in where ROTC is to help needy kids pay for college. It is to train military officers which has been my dream since i was 7 years old. The tuition payments are a side benefit for that.

Eh and its not quite 100k though that is a goal i wish to reach this year. More like 70k I will probably deposit another 3-6 thousand in it again. And im only 19 i couldnt always plan on having a portfolio to pay for school with as well as the fact that anyone who bases their ability to go to school around assets like high risk pig bonds gold futures and a few huge gambles of short selling large amounts of stock will end up sorry and penniless.
Putin33 (111 D)
27 Aug 11 UTC
You drink until you "black out" every weekend and you have 100K because you have no bills and invest half of your income as a 16-17 year old in your "portfolio". And yeah being "upper middle class" is being privileged. I know every rich kid likes to pretend they pulled themselves up by their bootstraps but sorry you exposed yourself.

If it walks like a duck....

This is a very true point. But i wouldnt say im lucky per se. I was lucky to be born with no disqualifying medical effects and with a sound mind. My college expenses are paid for by a scholarship issued after application and competition by the US Army. I return i will serve a certain amount of years in the army.

ROTC is a welfare program for the rich eh. Not surprised that the enlistees I know have little respect for them. Fake soldiers leeching off the tit of the state.

Obviously hyperbole on the first bit i would probably be in a coma if i blacked out every weekend haha.

I have 100k as a 19 year old (you cant trade until your 18 legally) because i worked at wendys and other fine establishments since i was 15 and didnt buy anything else of value like a car or electronics as I stated. I have the ability to invest half of my income because I dont have to pay for my education. Is it my fault other people dont want to sacrifice themselves for their countries or that they can't recieve financial aid in other ways? and upper middle class is priveliged now aye? My mother is a teacher and my father works a desk job for the government. They live comfortably just like I always want too.

I know you like the anonymity of the internet and ar elikely a high school kid in the us who hasnt had to do anything for himself yet but .....

i guess if it walks like a duck.

Putin, come on. ROTC is a program for recruiting the best and brightest to serve our country. They shouldn't take into account how much money a person has, especially because they're committing YEARS of their life to service afterward.
centurion1 (1478 D)
27 Aug 11 UTC
You would like to think so. It would make sense. I am not really sure what the benefit of gauging peoples income is and they never asked for it on any paperwork.....
centurion1 (1478 D)
27 Aug 11 UTC
but i think the descriptor, best and brightest they can get, is certainly more apt when you look at someone like myself haha.
gramilaj (100 D)
27 Aug 11 UTC
Well, centurion, I still think you're lying over the internet...but if you're not, that's pretty baller, thanks for serving, and if you can make a 1,000% profit in a year, I can hope you'll be my investment banker one day, haha.
centurion1 (1478 D)
27 Aug 11 UTC
..... yes I am in ROTC

and yeah i don't blame you i understand the futility of saying anything about yourself personally over the internet its not really worth it lets be honest. And like I said it isn't quite 100k thats a target to make this year.

And ive had stocks and bonds and stuff since I was younger its just not LEGAL too if you know what I mean. In my manner it was sort of like how a parent will let their child choose a horse to bet on at the racetrack and take his money he wants to wager but do the actual bet themselves.

And i took risks a normal person wouldnt as i said and i got into gold and since i didnt lose out with the crash in 08 and i was able to buy in when the market was very very low.

And alot of that portfolio is invested into orrendously dangerous bonds and such and im calculating their theoretical worth when icollect them. I invested in governments like ireland and france so they arent exactly safe. High yield though. And then i made a tidy sum short selling stocks for awhile though eventually that can blow up in your face.

Also 1000% is a bit of a stretch i would imagine. Also its nice to note that the 7k i initially had was just that an initial amount. i have pumped quite a bit of any money i could get my hands on for awhile including the majority from my summer job.

Oh and to be completely honest some of the mone yin there isnt from me. Whn my grandmother passed on she left me some money in a CD which i cannot touch. I didnt mention that because it was a bit unseemly it isnt anywhere near a majority either.
Putin33 (111 D)
27 Aug 11 UTC
Yeah they commit to 4 years of "service" in cushy officer positions where they'll never see combat. And I agree with gramilaj that this kid is probably lying through his teeth.
gramilaj (100 D)
27 Aug 11 UTC
Whatever, you shouldn't be bashing people who agree to serve in the military, even if they're not serving in dangerous areas.

It's not going to win you any supporters. You have to be politically aware and cognisant of the prevailing social dynamic if you're going to make any sort of difference or convince anyone with your arguments.
centurion1 (1478 D)
27 Aug 11 UTC
Let's just drop this whole stupidity. It's my fault initially. I'm going to do the rare thing on the internet and admit I was wrong. I should never have brought anything from the RL to an anonymous internet site that's just a recipe for disaster and frayed tempers.

The point I was trying to make was simply that networking and socializing in college serve very important and valuable purposes and you shouldn't focus entirely on your grades. Going out to a party or college bar and getting a little buzz or even relatively drunk could make you some friends you may need to lean on later in life.

Thucydides (864 D(B))
27 Aug 11 UTC
Putin your arguments can occasionally be convincing but you really turn a lot of people off when you just appear to be nothing but a demonizing antagonist.

Relax, man. We're all human beings here. Not "children of privilege" and the wonderful enlightened proletariat.

Instead of yelling at centurion for being rich, maybe speak to him quietly about it.

Like this:

Centurion have you ever considered donating some of that money to charity? I can recommend a few really good ones.

You could also invest in microfinance. Just some thoughts :)

About drinking, I agree with whoever said it isn't THAT big of a deal at the end of the day.

It's not. I think right now there are those who drink but object to CM drinking, those who don't drink and object to drinking, those who do drink and predict CM will drink, and perhaps those who think CM should drink, though I have not seen this.

I think we should probably let CM do whatever the fuck he wants.

However I also think that when he asks a question on this website I'm going to answer him honestly because I believe I would have appreciated that if I were him.

Hearing people brag about drinking is a great way to identify the tools at your school
Putin33 (111 D)
27 Aug 11 UTC
I'll stop yelling at the rich when they stop screwing over the rest of us. Not before. I'm especially not going to refrain from one of these trust fund babies who admit to getting drunk all the time while claiming they "worked hard" to earn their 100K in interest and dividends.
