Can someone explain to me how you get a sitter into one or more of your games? Because I'm going on a cruise in 4 days, and I can't use my phone there.

Japan.. How do we perceive them?
Hey guys, lets talk about Japan.
What are your thoughts on Japanese authorities allowing themselves to keep shrines for the old imperialist Generals in honor of their 'heroism'?
If you don't know what 'heroism' they have displayed in the past, than please I believe that we all have the right to know, and we can start this thread with those information.

I Hate To Ask Another Religious Question, But...
...this one won't STOP, because so many of teh friends I know won't stop. I'm NOT questioning anyone's beliefs, I'm just curious as to the reason why some religious people--and I'll admit this is mainly Christians I mean here, but that's just from my own personal experience, so if this is not you, don't take offense--seem to thank Jesus or Gor for EVERYTHING...even when it's clearly something THEY did (like do well on a test...unless God REALLY CARES if you got that A+, why thank him?)

Spendy bet and three-day phases: WTA
Who wants to play? (This is the winner-take-all thread.)
1000-point bet, 3-day phases (shorter than a 4-day phase, longer than a 2-day phase, a 3-day phase should be just right), standard map

For the "Not Quite Professionals"
Everyone is either into the crazy expensive live games or the cheap live games. I would like to make a live game with the stakes approx. 100. This would be a winner takes all and a 5 min phase. Who would like to take the risk?

Can we program a variant where a single player can play all seven powers?
I was wondering if it is possible to create a variant or a type of game where a single player could control all seven countries to test out certain strategies or to replay some games that were played elsewhere (not on wedip)?
No points/stat/Ghostrating will be used or rewarded of course.

Tell a joke!
There have been so many serious and argumentative threads lately, so I figured I'd lighten the mood. I remember a thread a while back that I enjoyed where people all shared jokes. I thought I'd make a new one rather than find the old one, (it was nearly a year ago). So share your favourite jokes, and laugh at everyone elses (or not I suppose, if they're not very good).

Tolstoy (1962 D)

"Read 30 pages and discarded it because he's a geographer?"

No, I discarded it because it was crap, and it was obvious from the first 30 pages that the rest of the book was going to continue to be crap. I have no qualms about walking out of a crappy movie after the first 30 minutes, either. I mentioned that he was a geographer because it explained why his knowledge of history was pretty shallow.

"Tolstoy with regard to his usual conspiracy bullshit"

ROTFLMAO! This from the guy who thinks Gorbachev was a secret agent of the International Capitalists, on a mission since birth to bring down the Soviet Union from within.

"(the Ottomans were expanding at precisely the same time as the Protestant Reformation was occurring)"

The Ottomans started expanding a hundred years before Matin Luther was born; Byzantium fell in 1453 after the Ottomans had already conquered a good chunk of the Balkans and given the Venetians a few bloody noses.

"while exaggerating the superiority of the Islamic empires whenever they score a victory"

The Muslims scored either strategic or major tactical victories (and usually both) in 8 out of the 9 Crusades. I think an 8-1 record more or less speaks for itself and doesn't really need exaggeration.

"Seriously you people who simply dismiss work because they come from a particular discipline annoy the shit out of me."

And every time you post on a historical topic that doesn't involve the Soviet Union or the history of Marxist thought, you reinforce my bias.
Putin,

Guns Germs and Steel was nothing new, everything he said in there has been said before by historians. He populatized it, and there is something to that but it isnt seen as valuable as earlier works like Crosby's

and when we were talking about Europe we were obviously talking about western Europe. Byzantium was seen at the time, and by scholars today as seperate from western Europe before and after the Eastern Schism by both the East and West. It would be wrong to discuss Byzantium and western Europe in the same breath.
why exactly do you think i dont like it because hes a geographer? I find it necessary because he rehashes old arguments.

But yes overall I believe historians should write history, we've had this conversation, though there are some exceptions
*unnecessary

Experts on the subject at hand should write history. An archeologisy who specializes in egyptology should write egyptian history for instance, not a 20th century historian.
I mean its great to have some cross over, Ive read great histories from linguists, political scientists, journalists womens studies specialists etc. But there is also the danger that these new disciplines dont bring Historical training with them, so their histories can be, and often are weak on historical conventions, especially showing and accounting for change over time

wow you guys are losers. you know nothing about politics. obama has done more for this counttry than any other president. and why are any of you arguing about obama bieng like hitler?
Draugnar (0 DX)
13 Jun 11 UTC
So perhaps a historian and an expert on the subject should always work together to produce the best, most consistent, and most reliable works of history. Interesting idea.

obama is the youngest president ever, and he's american so he has nothing to do with any of this tangential europe stuff.
