I have a player that will be out for a month of the tournament, but would like to continue after that. Would anyone be willing to take over his games until he comes back? Otherwise I will have to replace him. Let me know, here or email me to [email protected]. Thanks!

Anone game 54780
Seeing suspicious behavior in game title 'Anone game' gameID=54780 looks like a Russian/German alliance in an anonymous game with no messaging... can the mods check this out and reassure me. Thanks.

longest games
Hi, I'm a player in Wittlesbach Interruption and we are on Spring 1916. Since I've started playing online Diplomacy I've noticed most games end around 1907 give or take a year. We're at 1916 and the leading player has only 11 SC. We are also on our third leader in this game. Anyone else play a very long game?

Regular reports of cheaters in games posted on the forum
Here's a little bit of advice for all the new / inexperienced guys out there. If you do your homework before or at the start of a game, you don't have to worry about joining these types of games becoming a problem. What I mean by "doing your homework" is to check the profile of the guys with whom you're playing (so long as it isn't an anonymous game). Here are some things on what to look for:
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
10 Apr 11 UTC

a) are they relatively new to the site? If not, and they've played in a couple dozen games or more, they are likely not metagaming.

b) are they currently playing or have played other games with the same person or people? If so, the chances increase as to the likelihood of them knowing those other players in person (unless they have been on the site for a while, at which point you'll see older members playing with each other rather frequently)

c) If the answer to 'b' is 'yes' then open the game up and scroll through a few turns. Did they work together? Are they still allied? Do they regularly draw together?

If you do these things, see something suspicious, and think it might happen in this game, there are two things you can do:

a) if you haven't started the game yet, quit.

b) if you have started the game, then use this information to your benefit when talking to the other players in the game.

If other vets have other useful things to add, feel free to post them.

if it's obvious that they are metagaming email the mods to get a force pause if the players refuse to pause just so the mods can check things out before you continue the game. the time between the next phase will be increased to allow time to find replacement players.

if it's a live game emailing the mods might not be fast enough so what i have done in the past is took the full time for each phase and made a post in the forums asking for a mod to force pause the game. then when the game is paused email the mods about your game and they will take care of it if they are cheating and even if they aren't the mods will give you a response.

P.S.
please do not post your cheating accusations on the forums and if the mods dont think that the suspected player(s) are cheating then dont argue with them, they are here to help us not to be harrassed.

@maltizok: So you make threads in the forums asking for a moderator to intervene but then suggest that others don't do the same because its rude?

Might I also remind you that metagaming comes in many forms, and not all, if any, are against the rules. It's also a very subjective statement to call any form of metagaming "obvious."

Tru Ninja's suggestions are good ones. Whenever I have a suspicion I look at their player histories just so that I can help explain what led me to that conclusion in my email to the moderators.

The best way to keep yourself from becoming a victim of unfair play is to password protect games and require a private message to join. Vet the players of your games, and when joining a game, play with people you know or that at least have some history on the site.

You'll find that i never email the mods about assumed cheaters. I've found that people who do cheat in games, do so because they suck at it and it is far easier for me to talk to the other players on the map and gang up on one or both of them quickly to prevent it from being a problem in later years.

I would also venture to say that at least 50% of all the accusations out there are false claims.

@geofram

i said "do not post your cheating accusations on the forums" i never said not to ask for a pause if the other players are refusing. pauses dont influence the outcome of the game but it gives the mods a chance to check things out to make sure its all legit if theres suspicious play (like in the game i was in on ancient med everyone worked together against me, 4/5 and i had a mod pause it and all 4 players ended up gettin banned)

I find that a short polite email to the moderators is the only method of reporting they desire. Moderators should never be asked to do anything from this forum.
maltizok (787 D)
10 Apr 11 UTC
i only say to use the forum if its a live game (5-10min phase) because they may not see the email until its to late but you have a better chance of getting their attention making a post on the forums asking for the pause and then after getting the pause letting the post die.
Geofram (130 D(B))

If you're joining questionable live games, you deserve whatever outcome that transpires. Why do you require instant action? A moderator can look at a live game after it has been finished and still refund points and/or suspend players.

@geo

the game i joined needed 1 player and was starting in about 20seconds so i didnt have time to check out the other players and only had time to play a game if it was starting fast so i joined it. i wasnt aware that mods could do that post game or i wouldnt have tried so hard to get their attention.

This is one thing I don't understand. Why do members think moderators wouldn't have the capability to do X. They have access to the server. They can do whatever they want. They know what methods they prefer and its likely not what you're asking of them.

If you have any problems:
Send an email and then wipe your bloody memory of the entire event.

If a moderator requires more information, they'll contact you.
If a moderator wants to share the outcome of an investigation, they'll contact you.

The only way you can help a moderator is by utilising their preferred method of reporting in a concise polite manner and then stay out of their way so they can work more efficiently.

Unless I'm mistaken, the mods only have a set of tools built into the site, not direct access to the data on the database so they can't do just anything they want. Only Kestas can do that and he has to be careful of things like orphaned records and circular references.
Geofram (130 D(B))
10 Apr 11 UTC
Right, but the "set of tools" is pretty extensive, with capabilities most members don't understand. It is safe to assume that moderators can edit any game. They're not just force-pausers and banhammers.
Draugnar (0 DX)

But after the fact changes to a game are risky. IIRC, they don't have the means to alter the outcome or cancel an already completed game so a cheat could adversely affect one's GR.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

A couple things:

1) I try to refrain from force-pausing games unless I believe it will allow me to resolve an issue immediately. I dislike holding games hostage while I do an investigation.

2) If there's an issue that requires our immediate attention, I don't mind a polite thread asking us to check our email. However, no other info should be given in the thread. And, "I emailed you about a mutliaccounter 2 hours ago and haven't got a response" is *not* a time-sensitive issue.

3) The mods have many powers, which we chose not to disclose. This makes it much harder for people to cheat effectively, which is why when you send us a request to investigate, our results may not be what you expect.
Draugnar (0 DX)

Anybody can look at the code and deduce what powers are granted by the site though.
They could, given that
-They know how to read php code.
-They know where to find the source code.
-They actually care about this game so much that they want to go through all this effort.

Most multiaccounters (in my rather modest experience) are noobs, who cheat just because it's easier. I expect that the above does not apply to most of them.

I agree. I was just saying it isn't impossible to figure out...

did the zero SC survive get fixed or do you have to have a unit to get it?
I just took a nations last SC for the win, but they got eliminated. I physically took it in the spring forcing a disband so I'm guessing you either have to have a unit to get the survive or the problem was fixed.
