I have to say, Russia really is in a powerful position, but I have never managed to have success with Russia without absurd, unfair luck. (I have one win and one draw at 14 centers -- in both cases, multiple neighbors went CD. I took the win for the first one because I was desperate to have a successful Russia on the record, and I could have won again with one more turn in the draw one but chose to draw because it was ridiculously unfair. Other than that I get fucking owned as Russia every single time.)

I like Russia. I have had good success with it on many occasions... and even a 1904 Solo with Russia (unfortunately that's on my FB profile when I first played there).

You can win as Russia, but that doesn't change the fact that Germany is way better. Oh snap!

I'm in the "hate Russia" camp as well. The best I have done with Russia is a draw because someone CD'd, and I was hardly doing well in the game up to that point.

Russia does well, statistically, but I think takes diplomatic skill and effort, compared with France or England, for example. Thus I am not very good at playing Russia.

I've never been eliminated as Russia, so I've GOT to love it. My first two wins were with Russia too.

Russia doesn't do well in high standard games, where it only marginally beats Austria.

The problem with Russia is that it's involved in both conflict zones (the Balkans and North Europe), but in each of them it is the weakest power (2 units vs the 3 other players have).

Thus, unless there's a FRA-IT war, RUS is always on the losing side in case of 2 vs. 2 situations. Top games have a tendency to be like a trench warfare and RUS is not designed for this. One needs a bit of chaos to be a success as RUS.

I also don't like it. Worst country to play for me probably (don't know what my results are). Very demanding as diplomacy/communication also.

Austria sucks, Italy rules.

i won 2 solos as russia over at playdip out of my first 3 games. i like russia. you look so big you can be really blustery.

again, my argument is not that you cant win as russia, its that russia sucks

And then I got my first--and so far only--win as the Big Bad Czar.

So you can take that for what its worth--a good country allowing a bad player to win, decent player taking a decent country and catching some breaks...or a bad country and bad player both getting lucky in a chaotic game (but hey, gotta be good dealing with chaos to be a good Diplomacy player at some point, right...well, is there a good player here that can tell me?)

(Of the others I really like Italy, Germany and Austria I'm happy with as well, England I'm OK with...France and Turkey I just get killed playing--that is, I get killed faster.) ;)

vexlord, since Russia sucks, I vote that you move your units out of the way and give Turkey a shot at a good game.

I agree 100% with everything lvo said.... I thought Russia was good until I started getting into higher level games, and now I hate it. I would much rather be Austria.
