Just venting - another idea on CD's
With our endless programming resources, I think that anyone who has "left" a game or went CD (they would be the same, no?) should be unable to process a move in any other game until they rejoin and move.... and should suffer a two week "time out" in the penalty chair. :)

How do you play live non-gunboat?
I'm new to the board (but not to the game) and I played in a live gunboat game recently. At times it seemed like five minutes was barely enough to finish thinking through your orders and doublechecking them, especially if you have a lot of units. So what I want to know is, how do people play this way in non-gunboat? I don't think I could possibly keep up even two conversations and submit orders in that timeframe. Am I just slow?

Liberal Democrats
I think it is very interesting what is happening to the Liberal Democrats in the UK. Since they went into coalition government with the evil Tories, party members have been quitting in their thousands, with many apparently joining the Labour Party, which has reported the biggest influx of new members for several years. Is anyone here a Lib Dem supporter? What's your view?

Auto-disband?
Hey there-

I suspect this question has been asked before, but I couldn't find the information so here goes: how come it hasn't been coded in the software to auto-disband units when there is no other choice available to the player?

I would like to see the website become iPod compatible. I already know that iPods will work with the game but I would like to see a friendlier interface. Plus people being able to submit their moves on the go would be much easier and we'd have less people missing turns.

Any ideas?

American and Europe: Did We Get Kicked Out? Walked Out? Both?
I love hockey, so I go to hockey forums to have a chat--second they find out I'm American half of the Canadian fans automatically assume I think American franchises are better (they're not, by the way.) On other sites, LOTS of Euro/US bashing, on both sides, but it seems the Euros have the edge. It's like the Euros/Canada have a club, and we're not invited...or were and then got crossed off for...who? What? Why can't we be in the Western Culture Club again?

Live game IM group
Those of you that play live games probably realise that the system for setting them up isn't perfect. There are often 7 players up for a game who don't quite overlap or miss games that have been started. When you do get a game started, it's not uncommon to get a CD, and it seems to attract the occasional cheater as well.
hopsyturvy (521 D)

The best solution I can see is to set up a group of people on gchat that like to play live games - so that when you're thinking of setting up a game, you can see who's online before you start, giving you a better chance of getting a game off the ground. It will also make it easier to password games to keep wasters out.

It does mean sharing your email address with strangers - I think for it to work, everyone needs access to the list - so think carefully about which address you use. But the intention is that we would only add players to the list that we've played with before, so that we're reasonably sure everyone on it is legit.

If you're interested, drop me an email ([email protected]) or add me on gchat. Once we have a reasonable number of people, I'll send an email round periodically so everyone's up to date with who's on the list.

If you don't use gchat, it's just like msn but less evil. Most third party clients (like Trillian, nimbuzz, etc) work with Gchat so you can use this and your main messenger service at the same time if.

So far on the list: me, trip, ava. Come and join!

Feel free to PM me with any questions, objections, suggestions, and other things ending in tions. I'll bump this perdiodically as well.

Last thing - it's totally fine to create a new email to use with this group, if you don't want to give out your personal email. Just make sure you remember to log on whenever you're potentially open to a game!
I'm open to something like this, but I don't really use IM or anything vaguely like that. Why shouldn't this group just be maintained through PMs, or is there some way to set it up so that I can be notified without giving my email address?

A while ago, someone posted about a Live Game Club. Nothing came of it, but I think it's a good idea.

Can we just set up a couple times a week when we "get together" and play a live game?

I can add you guys to the list and people can choose to IM you.. but really the point of the thing is a way to see at a glance who's online and discuss details before starting the game -something you'll miss out on if you're not on IM. If you don't want to give out your email address or aren't on gmail then create a new account for the purpose... you guys might read your pms but most don't check them regularly enough

23 Sep 10 UTC
Abgemacht, I know people have tried to set up games with fixed start times, but I'm not convinced it works most of the time - I know I don't know if I want to play a live game until that day... but nothing to stop you trying
ashen_shugar (236 D)
24 Sep 10 UTC
I think it is a good idea, but like most I'm not really into the IM way of doing it. I use gmail already, but it only shows me on gchat if I'm actually on the site, and as I pop my mail that's extremely rare. I see the advantages behind the suggestion though.

What about setting up a yahoo group or something? It would then be e-mail driven, and those that want can set-up a separate e-mail account for this can. Send an e-mail saying "who's up for a game in 1 hour" and if you get 7 responses you're good to go?

Either way, it's only really going to work if there's a large enough "pool" of people there in the group. If it's only 10-15 or so, then ab's way of just trying to organise it in advance would likely work better.
hopsyturvy (521 D)
24 Sep 10 UTC
There doesn't always have to be 7 online for it to be useful - if you know you have 3-4 decent players interested before you start, you have a good head start.

Emails I think would be better than PMs, but still relies on timing of when people check their emails.

**The main reason to use IM is to see who is online - the instant commnication is just a bonus.**

Anyway, if people want to give their emails but don't use IM, then perhaps they can say so and be added to a different part of the list, so people will know not to expect to see you online, but to email you if they're starting a game. If this sounds like you, drop me a line.

Also ashen - if you like the idea, and are already on gmail, it wouldn't be much of a hardship to run gmail in the background whenever you're on webdip or otherwise seeking distraction. It doesn't mean you have to use IM in the normal run of things..

the way i see it, what if there to lose, besides spending nights joining games that don't start of get drawn after 1901 because of cds?

the way i have it set up, i must turn on the im manually, so it's completely unobtrusive. i also created a new email account for this with no personal information attached so if another member does hack my account, all he/she will get are the emails that they already gained access to by joining.

@ ahsen: i agree with you that having a large pool of people will make this work best, but if people don't join because it hasn't reached that point yet, it will never get there.

'is' there to lose.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

I like ashen's idea and here's why.

I have my diplomacy account tied into my real gmail account. ie, my dip emails are pushed into my real email. This means I am *never* logged into my dip account so you would never be able to gchat me.

How about we try the message group/mailing list idea (anyone have a better idea than yahoo groups?). At the very least it gives us an idea of the level of interest, and if it works all the better. The added advantage is that it could be used to arrange games for a set date/time as well as quick games.

I suppose there's no harm in trying, and like trip says you don't get anywhere without that. If it fails we can look at IM possibilities again, but I'm pretty sure that people would be more comfortable with this.
hopsyturvy (521 D)
25 Sep 10 UTC
Ashen, no reason not to do both but I already have a bunch of people interested in the im idea so I'm not about to drop it!
ashen_shugar (236 D)
25 Sep 10 UTC
Bunch being?

Combining the two could be the best of both worlds. Those that want to stick to one or the other would be able to. If you have four people "live" on IM, sending a group e-mail could get you the other 3 players.

I haven't been inundated either ;-) Sent invites to trip and ab and they haven't joined yet.

Anyone can join by going to http://au.groups.yahoo.com/group/webdip_live/ and clicking "join this group".

I think part of the problem is that this thread moves down so quickly that most people probably haven't seen it.

Hey,

what about an IRC chat room, with maybe a live chat on the site as well, where everybody could join easily and find people. I don't know if anybody proposed this yet (i am pretty new here), but I think it could be an option ...
