Many years ago, when I was 17, I was all set to break the Mortal Combat record. In the 22nd fight, I was armed with the Lance of Gindin and the Club of Ra. My spells were all spent, and I had suffered many small wounds, though my hit points were still at 76.

I specifically did a sequence of buttons which should have come out

However, what was produced on screen was

There was an extra club in there somehow! I have replayed this moment of my life over and over again in my brain, living with regret over what might have been, the record I would have held, the tournament I would have one, and the trophy wife I could have had, who ended up going home with the guy who should have been 2nd place. They are happily married on a 5 acre estate which should have been mine.

I know some time has gone by, and I've been kicking myself every day of my life since then, but can you please check the logs? I KNOW there were only 2 clubs in there.

That's a variant on humor called "mocking" which some people find funny and some do not. It does tend to have a lot of kick to it whether you like the flavor or not.

Also known as parody. I make good use of it on occasion too. Done properly, it can be a class act (I was particularly pleased when I parodied an essay posted by Pandora about how stealing from Wal-mart is a great thing, it turned out she'd stolen that essay too...)

i just cannot consider clever to waste time to write such a lengthy bullshit even if it's parody.
btw since we are talking about humor, did anyone watch the "Hang Over" movie? I really liked it. That's what i consider the best out of American culture (also 80s b-movies and the beat generation)

I have to say I used to be in the DBJ camp and consider most of these problems BS 'user-error' problems... but something happened to me today that is making me consider leaving the game and this site completely... I try not to make rash judgements so I'm going to sleep on this a bit and see the response to the email I sent the mods... but I FULLY believe idealist.

I am playing italy... TWICE I ordered Ion to Tunis and the order instead went to Greece. the first time was fall 1901... which meant I got no build... and I said to myself... "wow, what a mistake - I must have made an error". this DID cost me not only a build but essentially any ability for me to recover...

then in 1903 again - I ordered Ionian to Tunis... this time I double checked it THREE TIMES ... I know for a FACT I put in ion to tunis. tunis was empty, it was my only way to survive in that game... guess what... the order was adjudicated with Ion to Gre AGAIN.

so yeah - I'm pretty pissed... not so much about some dinky 12hr gunboat game... or my record which I value... or even my ghost-rating which i cherish (yes I'm very vain)... but most important of all - I'm pissed about the fact that I can no longer trust this site or its game-engine... if it makes mistakes like this on such a regular basis... then not only will it affect me negatively - but it also may mean that my enemies or my allies may suffer from this in my games... so then what the hell is the point? when there is no integrity to the process... why play?


so idealist... irrelevant of the ignorant and insulting comments by otherwise quite nice individuals and community members - I feel your pain... I believe you.

and no - I dont know how such a thing can be resolved but like I said - I'm waiting for the mods to answer.

12:27 AM just for the record... BOTH times I put in orders for Ion to Tunis... BOTH times it moved my unit to Gre instead... this is wildly annoying.
12:34 AM yes I wrote the mods. g'luck to you all, but I want you each to know that my order as entered and finalized BOTH times was Ion to Tun and not Ion to Gre... please dont comment as this is a Gunboat game, but I had to make sure you all knew that the move from ion to gre was NOT intentional either time.

@Babak - If you don't mind me asking (and feel free to avoid answering if you think it will give others too much insight into your gunboat strategies), why did you move to Greece in Spring 1902 if your goal was Tunis?

spring 1902 b/c I did now want to vacate ion (and I expected to be bounced out of Gre) obviously, I ended up vacating Ion... I should have probably held. but I did not consider the possibility that he would NOT move to gre.

that was the one time I intended to move to gre and ordered as such.

I am and always will be a founder member of the "USER ERROR" camp. I've read through the code a number of times, and have my own installation running that I thought might help me find the solution to this, but I really can't.
Assume was a system error:
Situation: Player inputs orders, system runs other orders.
Therefore: System changed orders
However the system has no inteligence.
So, if it changed the orders, the new orders would almost certainly be wrong, such as "Tun£s" (think about the number of possibilities, of which only 3 or so are legal moves)
Thus it is incredibly unlikely that the system changed your orders.

If anyone can correct me here feel free, but I can't see a flaw...

If you are going under the assumption there is a bug, I would think looking at iterations would make more sense than acknowledging the system doesn't look at intelligence. Verify that one the current (last) iteration is the only one that has a chance to get processed.

(the system doesn't HAVE intelligence, not look at. LOL)

And for anyone who think there may be a bug, I would suggest finalizing your orders. NOT finalizing leaves the possibility of user error. You may get to a screen with an 'update' and 'finalize' button, which means your orders will be processed. You may then inadvertantly click a drop down and change a move. That change will NOT be processed (but its possible you changed it to the order you really wanted, but not what will be processed).

Or you may change your order intentionally, but not re-click 'Update', because you see there is already a 'Finalize' order.

(I'm not suggesting or accusing anyone of having this happen - just saying to anyone who is worried about this sort of thing, finalize your orders.)

The thing is some of the people complaining of a bug do claim to have finalized their orders, only to see the system carry out different moves.

let me suggest something. if you print screen your orders, you are safe from the bug! try it. it's working!
