My God Kestas, your system is buggier than a termite infested ant farm!
In this game; http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=11661 I clearly ordered hold for all my units because I am such a peaceful dude. In fact, I even have a screenshot of it! (I do :D)

And yet my units just went all offensive-like. What is up?

Ashes...
ENG: 236-9, trail by 3.

8 overs remain. Two overs lost if there is a change of innings. 3 runs and six overs means that its a draw...

Thank god! What a result. Was playing in a match myself, and kept shouting to the boundary to find out the result. All square after that pummelling is a superb result to go to Lords, where I shall be cheering on England on Saturday next :)
Captain Dave (113 D)
12 Jul 09 UTC
Thankfully my team was batting whilst this was all coming to a conclusion! Cracking result, loved hearing all the cheering on TMS for every dot ball Monty faced!

Let's just hope Lord's doesn't let us down like it usually does...
cgwhite32 (1465 D)
12 Jul 09 UTC
It will. We haven't beaten the Aussies for over 75 years at Lords.

Why we aren't playing at Trent Bridge and Old Trafford, our two best result grounds is beyond me...
cgwhite32 (1465 D)
12 Jul 09 UTC
PS - Captain Dave - did you win?
Captain Dave (113 D)
12 Jul 09 UTC
Yes we did, by 3 wickets. I opened the bowling, 7-2-10-2, spoiled somewhat by the last over going for 5! Although it turned out to be a closer game than usual against this particular oppo - normally we walk all over them!

How about you?
Captain Dave (113 D)
12 Jul 09 UTC
And I agree with you about Old Trafford and Trent Bridge, it's galling...

I'm gonna stick my neck out and say England are gonna turn it around and win at Lords. I feel they can't do worse than that test

*filled with nationalistic pride* - i don't know anything about cricket, but we are obviously good at it! Well, presuming the Brits are good at it.

13 Jul 09 UTC
Hi Captain - OMT 2s lost again posted 172 all out batting first, aided by my heroic 5* at number 8(!) The oppo got there for the loss of 3 wickets with about 7 overs to spare, despite us bowling 7 maidens in the first 8 overs. No bowling for me on Saturday.

On Sunday, it was Lords and Commons XI against Lord Caenarvon's XI at Highclere Castle. The Lords and Commons won the toss, bowled first, and I ended up with 10-1-55-2 opening the bowling, though about 30 runs off me went between 2nd slip and gully. Also had 2 dropped catches and a definite out that wasn't given (edge behind to keeper). They posted 235-6 dec, we got there with 6 overs to spare and won by 6 wickets.
Captain Dave (113 D)
13 Jul 09 UTC
@cgwhite, Two very contrasting matches then! And I feel for you having all those runs going through the slip cordon... last Saturday one of the opposition openers scored an unbeaten ton that included about 40 runs through that area, as well as several false shots - he barely acknowledged it when he reached his century, instead he looked a little embarrassed!
It also sounds like your tail collapsed in the first game - although 5* is always good for the averages!

I ended up with figures of 13-5-23-4 for the weekend - the most shocking part being the 5 maidens, as I'm pretty sure that that doubles the total number of maidens I've ever bowled; let's just say that I'm normally less than economical...
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

cg- I know how it feels with runs going to third man. Its worse when you have fielders there who just aren't stopping the ball. In one game I was reduced to charging through from my run towards the slip cordon after they let another past shouting "Fine, I'll fetch the damned thing myself!". Grrrrr...

I'm sorry, but everytime I see/hear cricket, I think of Jerry Seinfield in the VISA commercial. "Now THAT was a wicked googly(sp)..." What the hell is a googly anyhow?
Captain Dave (113 D)
13 Jul 09 UTC
Draug, for once your spelling has not let you down!
cgwhite32 (1465 D)
13 Jul 09 UTC
A googly is a type of spin bowler's delivery. If you are an off-spinner (ball moves right to left if you are batting) it goes the other way, and vice versa for a leg-spinner.

@Captain Dave. Yes, I got rather frustrated with so many edges. I got taken off after 6 overs as the skipper thought I was going for too many runs (32 off 6), but if I had just got another slip and a third man.... I had no third man!

My average slowly is creeping up. 2 years ago it was 5, last year 9, now I'm reaching the heady heights of 14! Not a bad improvement over 2 years I think...
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
13 Jul 09 UTC
You don't need to know what a googly is to know cricket, I don't know what it is. The game is straight forward but like all games the rules can get convoluted for some rare cases. If you're from the US you should recognize a lot of the game from baseball

We were in Cambridge for sabbatical in 1989, and both me and my wife came down with some kind of flu immediately upon settling into our flat. So for a week, I had nothing to do but watch British TV, which consisted at that time of three channels, BBC1 and 2, and some independent channel. And it was in the middle of the Ashes. Sooo, BBC 1 AND 2 both had live cricket, and the other station had some sort of soap opera kind of junk all day long. So I watched cricket.

This would have been fine (I came to love county cricket later on, or any cricket with a defined number of overs to the game), except that England was SO far behind Australian that they had decided they had no chance of winning. So they adopted the strategy of keeping alive until time ran out....something like the next DAY. The English batsmen just defended the wicket, attempting to tick any dangerous ball off to the side, without trying for runs. Realizing this, Australia put all its field players in a tight circle around the wicket, in hopes that an English batsman might accidentally tick the ball into the air, where Australia could catch it for an out.

I have to tell you, it was boring me rigid. :)

cgwhite: it almost always refers to a wrist spinner.
Captain Dave (113 D)
13 Jul 09 UTC
TGM/cgwhite - I've never heard of an off spinner bowling a googly! Although the off spinner's 'one that goes the other way' is now called the doosra.

@smoky - in 1989 there were 4 terrestrial channels in the UK - BBC1, BBC2, ITV and Channel 4. Just a small point...

I have... cgwhite...
cgwhite32 (1465 D)

Actually TGM, the doosra is a relatively recent phrase introduced I think by Murali. The term 'googly' was actually first used by Bernard Bosquanet who invented the delivery.

Bosquanet was an occasional player for Middx at the start of the 20th Century. He was a medium pacer, who also bowled off breaks, but developed the 'googly', or the 'Bosie' as it was known in Australia as the off spinner's delivery that turned the other way.

So actually, the term 'googly' has changed over time. It was originally an offspinner's wrong 'un, but is now almost exclusively used for leg-break bowlers.

It helps to have gone to a university with a *huge* collection of cricket history books to read in the University Library when you get bored.
cgwhite32 (1465 D)
14 Jul 09 UTC
I should add though that it is debateable according to which texts you read whether he originally bowled off breaks or leg breaks, but essentially, the googly was the wrong un - the one that went the other way.

Yup, the UL did have every book since about mid 19th Centuryish - need to check the exact date.

They have *everything*. Reputedly, even copies of 'naughty' books..... There was a paper in the SPS course that was on "Changing attitudes to sex in the 1950s" as well, which required some interesting reading apparently!

Anyone following? Who's your money on?
I love watching it, but I have to say I've been a little disappointed with the treatment the organisers have given the Pyrenees. I know they want to keep the race close until the end (penultimate stage on a mountain-brilliant) but even so, these last few days have been rather dull.
