You'd have to make sure that more neutrals were made. On the standard map: England and France can only fight over Belgium while Germany can get Holland and also go for Belgium and the Scandinavians get in the mix as well. Turkey no longer has any chance at a neutral, same as Italy and Iberia and Russia, Austria and the Balkans have to fight over Rumania. You couldn't just overlay this on the standard map.

My friends and I played a variant once where every neutral SC had an army in it. The 'neutral' armies didn't move, and disbanded when forced to retreat, but of course you needed to make a supported attack to dislodge them so taking the neutral SC's became much harder.

In practice it was not good for gameplay as it just effectively made France and England stronger, and France is strong enough already in the regular game.

I've also seen a variant where every SC is a player: very confusing.

You mean the game starts with loads of players, each with just one SC and one unit? Wow, that's weird.

...a 32 player game? That would be chaos! But I'm intrigued... I imagine some people would be eliminated pretty quickly.

i want to play the inverse varient, where every supply centre is not, and every empty land territory becomes a supply centre. (turkey starts with two - armenia,syria; france with three gas,pic,bur) and the only neutral SCs are NAF and albania

I heard of that 34 player game before and it sounds like fun. Have to get someone to help you get your second center while not having someone else move in behind you.

Though it seems like it could be difficult to get 34 players and then keep them playing and not going CD.

I've always thought if would be more interesting to have a sort of realistic game, where the main nations remain as they are but the neutrals SC's each have a player controlling them...

Obviously horribly unbalanced and impractical, but there's just some inexplainable appeal to it. Even the "lesser" nations would be fun to play, as diplomacy would be that much more important, having to depend upon a stronger nation to defend you from another's aggression.
