Tournament Site
I have done a couple of updates to the League section, so if people could look for missing/wrong elements it would be appreciated.

Why Won't My Game Start?
I have been waiting for the game "D Day101" to begin for almost an hour. Everyone has joined in and it says "End of turn: Due now." It's said that for a while now, but the game has not started yet. What's wrong? Code: http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=11581

When will the games restart?
In most of my games, all the players orders are finalised and another game is apparently "due now".

It has been like this for about three hours. When will the games be restarted?

questions...
please excuse me for any of these. i'm just a bit confused. =)

1. why are the purposes of public press?isn't there a global section in each game for public pressing?
2. what does it mean when someone says "bump" in a forum?

building alliances
So when you see several possible allies, but mutually exclusive, what do you do?
chtalleyrand (345 D)
14 Jun 09 UTC
Do you write to all of them simultaneously with the proposal of alliance? It has obvious advantages: saving time and ability to compare offers and choose most profitable one. Disadvantage, in my opinion, comes when you get several agreements and you have to turn one (or more) of them right away after you made first proposal yourself, possibly accompanying your answer with some agressive moves. Looks kinda stupid and unreasonably hostile - to propose alliance and then right away bite the feeding hand.
Jacob (2466 D)

you pick whichever one you think gives you the best chance of winning or being part of a draw, cross your fingers, and hope for the best =)
chtalleyrand (345 D)

So you adress only one candidate at a time and if agreement is not met pick another?
Mr. Pinguin (344 D)

If you speak softly (hiding your big stick), then no particular alliance needs to be mutually exclusive.

In my games I try not to make promises that I can't keep, and I generally play as honestly and openly as possible.. because that helps people trust me even if we're more or less forced to be enemies at that particular moment in time.

Obviously, if your options are only:
"Hey france, I'll support you into Hol against Germ"
and
"Hey Germ, I'll sup you into Bel against France"

then you're pickled..
But if you can try to keep options open and semi nebulous, you can fish to see who will make the better ally in the short and long term based off of how they choose to reply.
Xapi (194 D)

I usually wait to be contacted to avoid that problem.
Mr. Pinguin (344 D)

^In other words:
I would not suggest that you ignore one player while trying to build an alliance with his (possible?) enemy. Among other things, your silence just indicates your preferences and/or hostile plans.

Nor should you try to make explicit promises to each right from the start, as that may force you into a betrayal too quickly.

Obviously, if your options are only:
"Hey france, I'll support you into Hol against Germ"
and
"Hey Germ, I'll sup you into Bel against France"

---

This is where you support Ruhr into Holland and go 'whoops!'.
chtalleyrand (345 D)
14 Jun 09 UTC
Ok, Mr. Pinguin, I see your point. It's not always possible to be vague though: sometimes situation calls for immediate specific arrangements, I guess.

Xapi: that is definitely a conflict-free strategy, but a little bit passive, don't you think so?
chtalleyrand (345 D)
14 Jun 09 UTC
SoroSuub1: and then France and Germany are both mad at you and jointly attack :)
EdiBirsan (1469 D(B))

There is no such thing as mutually exclusive allies.
Even if they are fighting each other they can still both be your ally as long as you are careful to avoid being in the middle of things.
Akroma (967 D)
14 Jun 09 UTC
I don't like waiting for others to come to me, I am usually the one who tries to talk to everyone as early as possible.
That's because the first one who makes a reasonable proposal is the one who gets considered.

especially in the first year, you have to make yourself seem to be a lucrative ally to everyone, so that everyone is interested.
When everyone is interested, you have the freedom to choose.

If you only talk to one possible ally, always keep in mind that the ally you*didn*t talk to may very well has talked to you ally. And that now, the only one who has the freedom to choose is your ally. And that might easily end up very badly.
Centurian (3257 D)
14 Jun 09 UTC
Always send messages to everyone immediately. You can talk the talk with everyone and not seem like you are screwing them immediately. As Turkey, you can suggest a bounce in the black sea with russia and then promptly promise Austria you will open to the black sea and ask him if he can convince Russia to make it a dmz. Your moves will betray no one: they both expect you to open to the black.
Centurian (3257 D)
14 Jun 09 UTC
And I 100% agree with Akroma, especially on not talking to one ally and then they petition your chosen ally.

How to log off.
I've once checked the box "stay logged in" when logging in. Now someone else would like to use this computer to create an account, but I can't log out properly and the other person can not create an account - one gets the error message "This page is not allowed for your account type". How do I do?

How would you dscribe your style? I haven't seen much on styles in diplomacy, possibly because the nature of the game is that not everything is out in the open.

Just a thought...
It seems as this site has a very liberal audience relative to other sites that I (stopped) hang(ing) out in. As extraordinarily fiscally conservative, and socially apathetic, does anyone have any theories as to why? I would understand a libertarian slant, as most of our generation is very libertarian, but the fiscally liberal stuff just confuses me...

Colonial Diplomacy
Hello all!

I am one of the, I presume, few Diplomacy players that also plays the less common "Colonial Diplomacy" spin off game. I was curious whether or not there is any interest in a PHP Colonial Diplomacy site.
