Diplomacy on Wikibooks
I had never noticed that there was a Diplomacy article set on Wikibooks - I had only ever searched for Diplomacy on Wikipedia (and Uncyclopedia). But this looks like an amazingly useful resource. I wonder why it's not referenced more - because no one else has noticed it either, perhaps?

WTA Question
I'm in my first WTA game and wanted to pose a question. I would think the nature of the game, since only one can win, would have alliances switching as one country gains a decided advantage. Is that the case? The only alternative would be if two allies had clearly come to a commitment to draw (or I suppose race to the 18). What are some veterans' experiences? Thanks.

Can you force your own unit out??
If you command a unit to move and you command another unit to move into its place supported by another unit. What happens if the first unit is unable to move?

I.e does the unit trying to come in dislodge your own unit that couldn't move, as the unit coming in has support? Or does nothing move??

On the profile page - where you have the stat percentages... would it be possible to take the "playing" out of the total number of games? or at least make the percentages apply for "Finished Games" rather than ALL. why? b/c it gives a better representation of how a player has performed!

A Turkish Supply Center in Jerusalem?
I am suggesting that we move the sc in Smyrna to Jerusalem. Not only would this be cool, but it would spread out all the centers in Turkey.
For example:
americandiplomat (0 DX)
24 Apr 09 UTC
1. Wouldn't it make it harder to attack Turkey. The Sc's are so close, that one army can basically take them all.
2. Wouldn't that just be really cool?

I would love to hear all of your suggestions.

Hmm, just had a thought: *if* Plura pulls in more than is required to run the site the remaining funds would be used to pay for Kestas' dev time. However, perhaps some of this could be used to pay AH in return for not being closed down?!

By no, I really don't like that idea. I think it would seriously weaken Turkey, and thus increase the number of Russian-Austrian starting alliances. Thus it may be good for Italy, but would I think make Turkey too weak

I'm missing the 'cool' part :)
What is cool about having the center in SYR and not in SMY?
Gobbledydook (1389 D(B))
24 Apr 09 UTC
Answer to 1. No. Turkey will find it harder to defend too since his SC's won't be connected any longer.
Answer to 2. No. The only person who thinks it's cool is you.

At least Damascus is plausible. But beyond the obvious gameplay ramifications it still doesn't make a ton of sense. Its Turkey, not the Ottoman Empire. During WW1 the Ottomans were being run by the nationalist young turks, the Arab states were basically just vassals.
How about letting Turkey get a fleet to the Red Sea, travel around South Africa and attack Spain?
airborne (154 D)

@americandiplomat If you really want to try out your idea. Play the 1900:variant.
Note: Get the variant from the DP pouch. The variant bank doesn't have the REM rule.
djbent (2572 D(S))
24 Apr 09 UTC
@ centurian i think you have your timing wrong, didn't the young turks take power after the war, when the allied powers were going to divide up what became turkey? there was the whole civil war with greeks against turks, turks against russians, armenians, british, and more? i think, but i'm not sure. so during diplomacy it would be the ottoman empire. everyone just calls it turkey for short, but the concept of turkish nationality really didn't evolve until the 1920s, as i understand.
Ivo_ivanov (7545 D)
24 Apr 09 UTC
Yep, he came to the big stage at the end of WWI - after the defeat to the allies and the Greek occupation. It was very much the Ottoman Empire at that stage - and there was fighting all over the middle east in WWI
djbent (2572 D(S))

that's what i learned when i was in turkey in any case. wikipedia, for what it's worth, seems to agree:

Following years of decline, the Ottoman Empire entered World War I through the Ottoman-German Alliance in 1914, and was ultimately defeated. After the war, the victorious Allied Powers sought the dismemberment of the Ottoman state through the Treaty of Sèvres.

The occupation of İstanbul and İzmir by the Allies in the aftermath of World War I prompted the establishment of the Turkish national movement.[5] Under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Pasha, a military commander who had distinguished himself during the Battle of Gallipoli, the Turkish War of Independence was waged with the aim of revoking the terms of the Treaty of Sèvres. By September 18, 1922, the occupying armies were repelled and the country saw the birth of the new Turkish state. On November 1, the newly founded parliament formally abolished the Sultanate, thus ending 623 years of Ottoman rule. The Treaty of Lausanne of July 24, 1923, led to the international recognition of the sovereignty of the newly formed "Republic of Turkey" as the successor state of the Ottoman Empire, and the republic was officially proclaimed on October 29, 1923, in the new capital of Ankara.

Mustafa Kemal became the republic's first president and subsequently introduced many radical reforms with the aim of founding a new secular republic from the remnants of its Ottoman past. According to the Law on Family Names, the Turkish parliament presented Mustafa Kemal with the honorific name "Atatürk" (Father of the Turks) in 1934.

@Ivo - yeah i recall the allies got the arabs in what's not saudi arabia, jordan, iraq, etc to rise up against the ottoman empire with promises of independce. only saudia arabia actually got it tho, and under the new monarch hand picked by the british, i think. british protectorate in palestine/trans-jordan also was part of what caused the huge mess that is the middle east now.

I also think a fleet in Cairo, Beruit, or Alexandria would be nice.
Also Turkey starts out with the best defense anyway, it would even out the playing field

...Go play on the World Leaders Diplomacy Game Site.
I would say no simply because it makes Russia's southern flank too much more vulnerable in Fall 1901. The only reasonable move from Jerusalem would be to Armenia (to potentially convoy across the Black Sea or else to attack Sevastopol). Turkey already has few enough opening options as it is. To make him completely predictable is entirely undesirable.

Right.

Has a mod taken note of this yet?

I was just suspect when I saw that he suddenly had hundreds of points. Though I am pretty sure there's one innocent not-him getting fucked in there.

The only problem with the Jerusalem idea is the fact that Smyrna is a city in Turkey, Jerusalem is a city in Modern Day Israel (Barely off or on the corner of the map) adding it in would be like giving Russia a Sc in Irkutsk (Off or
Barely on the map) or Great Britain one in America (Definitally off the map) in the way that it would be so hard to reach that it gives you a distinct defensive advantage
Jon Tinsley (0 DX)
27 Apr 09 UTC
I agree with Knight, Israel would barely be on the map if it is at all. The supply center would be so hard to reach that Turkish players would just begin using the Australia tactic from Risk

Robyrt (113 D)

Pluses for Turkey:
A build in Syria is even more non-threatening than one in Smyrna
Invading Turkey takes 1 season longer

Minuses for Turkey:
New units take longer to reach the front
Less control over the Aegean Sea
Less power against Austria
Lepanto is even better against you (because a convoy to Syria takes an SC, and a convoy to Smyrna borders all 3 SCs)
figlesquidge (2131 D)
28 Apr 09 UTC
People, lets leave the accusations out of this, there's a different thread for that.
Anyway, this idea would cripple Turkey! His other SCs would be very easily taken without that support
Zionism makes me happy

Acctualy Knight is my friend Cody. I dont play games with him for two reasons, I play Diplomacy at his house and that would be unfair to each other, and he would betray me because I can be a jerk to him. If I was multiaccounting would I not put my account and Knights Dawn in the same game for a great advantage? ;)
