Concerning ranks and points, is it better to be defeated completely or left with one SC?
I mean you survive, but not really.

Take over CD for free
Hi: I'm watching all these games with CDs, but nobody wants to play them because right now, they cost points just to lose. I'd actually like to play them as much as starting a new game because of the increased need for diplomatic dealings, but they just cost too much as it is right now.

How about creating a troubleshooter category that lets people who want play a limited number of CDs for free.

Need help pausing...
I've been called out of town unexpectedly, and I'm not sure if I'll have internet access until Monday. I've asked for pauses in all my games, but in some I have not-quite-CD powers or other players who have not voted for them. Is there any way I can get some help pausing? I just don't want to forced into CD by non-voters.

This site and its PPSC rules are NOT "Dipomacy" they are a bastardization of a quality game
I have now played on this site and FB for 2 full months+ and finally I'm fed up with it. this is NOT Diplomacy... its the bastardization of a quality game - and its dragging the name of the game down with it.

GFDT Update
Llama - can we get an update on how this is going?
Standings, games completed, etc.
fortknox (2059 D)
08 Feb 09 UTC
I've been thinking the same thing, but I think there are still some round 1 games being played
dangermouse (5551 D)
09 Feb 09 UTC
Yes, but we don't have to wait for the entire round 1 to finish before any updates are made to the standings. Besides, if completed games were updated now, there would be less work later.
Akroma (967 D)
09 Feb 09 UTC
I think it is only 3-4 games that have no finished yet.
One of the games looks like it was supposed to be drawn, but it was paused instead. I wonder what is up with that
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
09 Feb 09 UTC
I make it 5 games plus that one that appears as though it was supposed to be drawn.

I've basically compiled it by hand. I will post in a bit once I get it copied onto a word document.

The big winner so far: Akroma! He won both of his games. Madness!
Centurian (3257 D)
09 Feb 09 UTC
Ok, I have made two lists. I've rounded decimal points to the nearest tenth. I counted cgwhite and darwyn 17-17 pause as a two way draw. I've first ranked players by how many points they have guaranteed for themselves. Points in brackets are probable points added with any points they may already have. Probable points were determined by counting the number of players in a good position (if you have one centre I assume you will be eliminated) remaining in the 5 games that haven't finished (8,12,14,15 and 16). I then count that game as a draw for those players. I think that is the most likely outcome anyways. The second list has the players ranked according to these probable points.

Wonderllama doesn't make the cut-off point for qualification clear, but he says it will be atleast as many as there are games (ie 16). I would hazard that you are eliminated if you are past 21. Players that have no points are not ranked.

Lists are to follow.

There are a lot of poor saps in the 11.3 category fighting for that 21st spot... Were ties broken by seeding?

how many points should I have banked to ensure my eligibility to participate in the next iteration of the tournament? and when does it start again? march/april?
thewonderllama (100 D)
09 Feb 09 UTC
Heh...guess I should have told you guys I was fixing it up. All this is done by scripts, so you should never need to do it by hand. :)

There were some issues with my data that I've been cleaning up, so this has taken much longer than it should have.

But now...after much ado...the site has been updated. Game status is shown, and scores as of about half an hour ago have been posted. Standings will be updated on a regular basis. Scores in red indicate final scores for that player.
thewonderllama (100 D)
09 Feb 09 UTC
At the moment, the tournament runs annually, starting somewhere in the vicinity of September/October. If next year runs the same as this year (which, more or less, I expect it will), you'll need 10 points to participate.
Akroma (967 D)
09 Feb 09 UTC
top of the list, huh ?
I am not sure if I should be glad because I as a total newbie was able to clib to that spot, or if I should be worried because people will see that and do the same thing they did to marek in his games...*sweats*

Centurian (3257 D)

You would make an official version right after mine wonderllama!

But it looks like to qualify you need anything better than a three way draw.
dangermouse (5551 D)
09 Feb 09 UTC
How has cgwhite not gone CD in game 2? He hasn't logged in since Jan 26th. Darwyn/cg is this one that is an agreed draw that a mod can enforce?

Am I to understand that there were 35 players and that they will be reduced to 21 players in the second round or to 14 players in the second round?

What happens after the second round?

thewonderllama (100 D)
10 Feb 09 UTC
21 players in second round, top 7 to the final round.
Centurian (3257 D)
10 Feb 09 UTC
There were actually 56 players entered in the tournament, its just not all of them survived any games.
Centurian (3257 D)
10 Feb 09 UTC
Also, the Wonderllama, I assume you calculated the in play points by how many centres the player currently has? That is what gives the slightly different results from my less technologically advanced method.
thewonderllama (100 D)
10 Feb 09 UTC
You assume correctly.

My script calculates the points according to the specified rules for all completed games and where a game is not completed, estimates scores based on SC count.
Aha! Thanks to thewonderllama I'm holding on!

Wow... still 6 games going. If I get into the second round, it will be by the skin of my teeth...
Wow, probable 6th or 7th seed to the second round, not too shabby for a first round 50th seed :) ...
Braveheart (2408 D(S))
12 Feb 09 UTC
If my understand is correct then I think..... a 12 SC second place would allow you to qualify for the 2nd round, where as a 3 way draw would probably mean you miss the cut (unless you had a high seeding pre-tournament).

Btw - any updates on the league standings? They must all be drawing to a close by now.
thewonderllama (100 D)
12 Feb 09 UTC
They've just recently been updated. The most up-to-date information will be on the tournament page at: http://www.llamanation.org/gfdt2008
Braveheart (2408 D(S))
12 Feb 09 UTC
Somehow General Ireland and I were granted 25.33 points for a 3 way draw from our 1st game... think that should be 11.3 points.
Braveheart (2408 D(S))
12 Feb 09 UTC
based on the website.
No Braveheart, my numbers at least were a probable total based on the number of supply centres I have in my current game. As far as I know, the white numbers indicate an approximate total for the standings based on the number of supplies you currently control in your ongoing game. As such, I have a "probable" 25.3 points to place me for the second round, as opposed to the definite 11.3 points I currently have before the completion of my other current game. Hope that clears things up!
thewonderllama (100 D)
12 Feb 09 UTC
General_Ireland is correct. Where a game is completed or the player eliminated from it, the player gets the correct number of points based on their position, where a game is not yet complete, the player gets estimated points equal to his or her current number of SCs.

Once both games satisfy the condition of being complete or the player being eliminated, the player's score is final and is turned red.

Variant - Touch Diplomacy
Anyone up for a Touch variation game? I played in one before and it was a lot of fun but i need to be reminded of the exact rules. we had one global message allowance per regular turn(we can do without that i think) and then we could only chat to countries that units were alongside each other.
who did i play it with before?...flashman and cgwhite do you remember the exact rules?
