Rules Question/Check
If I convoy an army, and support the attack with a fleet... and the area is defended by one troop without a support hold, don't I win the attack?

Multiaccount Ban
Users Centaurian, vb, carlton, andreas75, calispo, and hotrod69 have been banned for multiaccounting.

I have temporarily left two other accounts (calibrate and Armageddon2) which are possibly related but at least not involved in any of the same games.

phpDiplomacy Christmas Break
I don't know if this has happened before, but it was an idea that crossed my mind.
Perhaps it might be an idea, as people have a tendency to be busy around Christmas, to relieve them of having to think about their orders?
It could be just Christmas, or Dec 24-26, or whatever. What do people think?
Archonix (246 D)
30 Nov 08 UTC
I know I'd appreciate it, I guess some people might not want their games interrupted though.
WhiteSammy (132 D)
30 Nov 08 UTC
yeah but Church there might be people who dont do christmas and might find it offensive that their holidays arent honored by a temporary cease-fire
I know I certainly would appreciate it as well, since there are a few days during the holidays that I'm not even sure I will be able to enter orders. It's of course up to everyone else though, and I am sure there are some who are eager to plow onward in their current games. I'm more concerned about the GFDT games that I might miss orders in than anything...
Assuming I survive that long, of course lol...
Glorious93 (901 D)
30 Nov 08 UTC
WhiteSammy has a good point - It should probably just remain as an agreement between the players within the game whether or not they want to pause it over Christmas, rather than having it forced upon them.
Again, its in the FAQs that we are guaranteed seperation of Church and Diplomany. Look it up.
figlesquidge (2131 D)

I will be asking for all my games to pause, and whilst I suggest you do also, I do not think it's fair to enforce it on everyone.
SteevoKun (588 D)

Make it a poll and let majority rule, either within each individual game (the best choice, but certainly the hardest) or within the site as a whole. It's a matter of pragmatism, and anytime a solid majority of the site or an individual game wants to pause the game/system I see no reason to not do so. Anyone who's offended by pausing because the majority don't want to pause have no more basis for being offended than someone who gets stuck working a double shift out of the blue and misses orders as a result of that, in fact the latter has more to be upset about and he has to just deal with it.

Long story short, let the majority rule - presuming Ketsas and co. are willing to entertain the idea in the first place. Why let one person dominate a game just because the pther 6 people are NMR's because of a holidy?
diplomat1824 (0 DX)

I'm in favor of it. People need a reprive from Internet gaming, especially during the holidays.
trim101 (363 D)

but like its been mentioned its not everyones hoilday and it would be wrong to assume as much
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
30 Nov 08 UTC
I wouldn't support it because the same argument could be used many times, and it reduces the hopes of people away for a week to get a pause when the rest have the day anyway.

Also, it is certainly not majority rule, otherwise Elo would have been implemented long ago (probably before its due date, I might say)
valoishapsburg (314 D)
30 Nov 08 UTC
I had my games paused for the Thanksgiving break and people were more than understanding. A site-wide pause would be a bit radical, since each game can be paused (certainly there may be those who wont pause, but that can be dealt with individually in some manner). Besides, there may be different factors involved, such as the dates the pause is agreed to. I'm in favor of pausing for the holidays, just not site wide. Also, if the entire site is paused, and I assume not too many people will be coming on during that time, won't Kestas be losing sponsorship/money from that one program?
"Make it a poll and let majority rule, either within each individual game (the best choice, but certainly the hardest) or within the site as a whole. I disagree with this logic completely. Before joining games, had there been a notice stating that we will be polling members, thats fine. But after the fact, after games have started, you want to impose new rules?

And majority doesn't always rule, not if it violates civil rights. (I'm not saying that this does violate any ones civil rights, just making a point that majority does not always rule, as a rule.)

@Dingleberry

The only person who has rights when it comes to a sweeping decision on this site is the creator, so obviously these are all just suggestions to him. However, I don't see how a two day pause will hurt anyone, unless they're just spoiled like that centaurian guy that was complaining about this lame site or whatever he called it. Frankly I don't need the time because I'm just staying home for the holidays anyways so I would abstain from the vote and would just as soon not see anything paused, but if a solid majority want it I think it ought to be seriously considered. Once again, all according to Kestas' oversight and desire/ability to reasonably do anything that people may want done.

And Dingleberry, I'd say as a rule majority rules (in any quasi-democratic society). It's the exception for the majority to not rule. While those exceptions are quite often precisely what preserves the democratic character of a group, it's not the rule for people to get their way just because they claim they've been offended (although unfortunately this is and has been changing throughout the Western World).

I'm opposed to it too. Christmas is a time of year when I get more free time, not less, and am thinking of starting a game for humbugs like me, who hate Christmas
If people want a one or two day break then why not just join games with longer deadlines. It's not to say that Christmas can't be planned for.
Steevo,
Kestas can do as he wishes, and I will support him with whatever he decides. I merely made my objections known regarding your plan. Is there a problem with that? I never claimed to be offended. I was objecting your logic.

I am available to pause the games I am involved in upon request of fellow players. I think that for a site that gather people from all around the world, belonging to dozens of different confessions, it would be unfair to schedule breaks that fits only one culture/country.
'confessions'? I must admit that word usage was new to me, had to go look it up.

"Also called confession of faith. a formal profession of belief and acceptance of doctrines, as before being admitted to church membership"
He meant professions I'm sure.

i have to admit im resiting the urge to go off on one about how christmas isnt really christmas its a pagan festival, jesus was really born in august, but i wont :p
Glorious93 (901 D)
30 Nov 08 UTC
Christmas was only put on the same date as a pagan festival to ease the transition into Christianity... besides, I like having Christmas in the winter (as it is over here) Something to look forward to. It just wouldn't be right to have it in August...
Centurian (3257 D)
30 Nov 08 UTC
Lets not digress. I'm sure most minorities would understand that their games won't run without the christians. I'm curious about the opposition that is anything other than "someone else will be pissed". Imperator Dux, care to elaborate?
Sicarius (673 D)

I dont celebrate christmas so I would be fine with no break. but I recognize that many of you do so I'm not opposed
I don't celebrate Christmas either. If someone wants to ask me within a game to pause, I have no issues with that. I am, however, against the idea of a mass suspension of games. Since I don't see Kestas being able to implement a table by table vote, each table will be on its own.

EdiBirsan (1469 D(B))

A site wide pause would be reasonable if there was a site wide state of instability and we needed on site moderators/program types to be always available to fix problems.
But that is not the case here and there is a mechanism for the pausing of the game on a game by game basis.
So I would say leave it to the individual games.

Unfinalized unit destruction
I put in an order in one of my games to destroy a unit in North Africa, but left the order was unfinalized. When I return the phase has past, and it destroyed Ukraine instead (because it was the furthest away from my home SCs). I thought that leaving updated but not finalized orders for build phases would execute those orders, like in regular diplomatic phases. So what gives?

Favorite/least favorite philosophers?
After Thucydides' accusation of solipsism I thought I'd bring up this topic for a little healthy discussion and perhaps some mind-expanding debate.

My favorite philosopher would be a toss-up between Aristotle and Nietzsche. My least favorite is indubitably Plato.
