Question
If I am moving from Warsaw to Moscow, being supported by Ukraine, and there are two other armies who are moving into Moscow from St. Petersburg and Sevastopol, what happens?(The two armies in St. P and Sevastopol are NOT supporting each other, just moving into Moscow)

Man attacked by Panda
Every year it seems there are numerous stories about people in zoos climbing over fences and moats to get at the animals and than attacked by the animal. In parks people try to feed or pet wild animals with the same results. Than there are cases of domesticated animals being teased till the animal finds a way to get at the person. These events are in the news, signs are posted etc. What the hell are these people thinking! To many Disney Movies? What?

Removing /commands from chat
I think that any line sent in the global chat that starts with a "/" should not be shown in the text. Obviously it will be parsed as a command, and if it is a valid command then the text is not needed as a Gamemaster message is sent instead. As it is, the system gets rather messy as you get lots of lines just saying /pause followed by the system response.

EOG statement - "UN variant"
EOG statement for the “UN variant” game (http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=5933). The game is based on the idea that treaties can be published in global tab, and in that case they are “enforceable” by the UN (i.e.: if they are broken the guilty player will be sanctioned).

Colors
I am not a fan of the colors for the countries used here.
How hard is it to make a code change on the colors?
EdiBirsan (1469 D(B))

I would like to see England as a Darker Blue and France as a lighter blue,
Austria as closer to Red and Russia closer to white with Germany a grey.

Also I would like to see the Support lines being more of a line with a S at the end with a little arrow from the top of the end of the S
Have movement being a thicker line ====> with support the thinner ----

Do away with RED lines.

Treefarn (6094 D)

It is supposedly in the works. I made note a while back that the colors of very difficult for the colorblind. Especially the global chat. I can never tell who says what. If it said "England says:....." it would be so much nicer. Seems like easy code to add.

i remember when i joined we had a different map, it had a very washed out pale look. this one we use now is much better.

Hopefully the German/Austria colors can be tweaked to accommodate the color-blind without changing them too much, because I think color is just a matter of taste

Over on Facebook Diplomacy people said they wanted the color to look more like the boards they used, one with a white Russia etc. I based the colors on the board I use and so newer colors would look totally unnatural to me, I think the color scheme people prefer depends only on what they're used to

A way to select different color schemes would be good, but doing it with the current set-up may use a lot more resources, and would be a hassle because the colors are also used in text outside of the map (e.g. a purple Russia has purple text, a white Russia couldn't have white text, there are always other considerations when implementing these things)

-- Sorry about the delay in my efforts on this Kestas - with my application for university being processed at this time I haven't had much free. Hopefully over Christmas I will be able to finish it and then this will be very simple to implement.

The new proposed colour-scheme is kind of very saturated, but if this is the only way to make phpDip accessible for colourblind people, I am for it, although I find the present palette more "elegant".

It would be interesting to see how units of each power stand over the colour of other powers (as it happens at the end of a successful attack in spring).
Treefarn (6094 D)
22 Nov 08 UTC
As a colorblind person, Thank You Mac, for acknowledging that giving people equal access (in this case at least) is more important than looking pretty. I suspect that after a color change, if Kestas offered to change it back in 6 months, people would be telling him not to, that the proposed change isn't as pleasing.

its fine how it is whats the big deal
Centurian (3257 D)
22 Nov 08 UTC
I don't care about the colours really, but its not simply a question of taste but of historical fact. For instance, Czarist Russia is often associated with the colour white.
Centurian (3257 D)
22 Nov 08 UTC
Perhaps we could just have verious different colour scheme options. The current one being the default and other kinds being options that we personally switch to? This would accomodate everyone!
mac (189 D)
22 Nov 08 UTC
Centurian, this is possible, but very demanding on the system as maps would be generated on a "per person" basis rather than on a "per game" one. Or at least this is my understanding of the problem! :)
Pandarsenic (1485 D)
22 Nov 08 UTC
I'm fine with any scheme, really, but I can tell just from looking that this map is terrible for colorblind people.
titansbt89 (199 D)
22 Nov 08 UTC
What if there were suble patterns in each color, ie the Austrians had diagonal stripes of a lighter and darker red, Russia diagonal stripes the other way, France polka dots etc...would this help the color blind?
WhiteSammy (132 D)
22 Nov 08 UTC

hey is there any way to also add the date of when a game was started?
or a date next to the name that tells the last time someone joined a game
Chrispminis (916 D)
22 Nov 08 UTC
I'm confused. People keep referring to the link Kestas posted as the new and proposed colours... as far as I can tell those were the old colours back in the day. I remember when the new map came out I thought it was too pale, though now I think the old map looks absolutely ridiculous.

I think the colours are fine as it is, but I can certainly understand the concern about colorblindness. I am quite fond of the order representation though so please don't change that.

If the board colours are better for those that are colourblind I wouldn't mind a switch because I'm sure I'd get used to it relatively quickly.
Treefarn (6094 D)
22 Nov 08 UTC
Thucydides said "its fine how it is whats the big deal"

The big deal is that 10% of the male population (so 9.99 % of the php Diplomacy population) is colorblind and have a hard time with the current colors.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
22 Nov 08 UTC
well... you can just roll back the history and keep track if it gets that bad. i imagine if you are colorblind you would be used to dealing with that kind of thing
Maica (145 D)
23 Nov 08 UTC
Well, I like the map the way it is, but if it is changed to better help colorblind people i dont see a problem with it. It's not as if i wont be able to see it because its been changed.
mac (189 D)
23 Nov 08 UTC
Thucydides, I have no reason to think your last post was meant to be deliberately offensive, but - despite of this - I would still feel offended if I had a disability (especially one that is invisible like dyslexia, colour blindness, learning disorders and alike) and you would tell me "it's your problem go and get is solved by yourself, you are probably already used to that, anyhow".
Treefarn (6094 D)
23 Nov 08 UTC
used to dealing with that kind of thing"

Yes, and you can just deal with new colors. You asked what the big deal is, thats it. Whats the big deal of you dealing with new colors?
Treefarn (6094 D)
23 Nov 08 UTC
(resisting urge to add 'you selfish twit...' damn.)
titansbt89 (199 D)
23 Nov 08 UTC
Instead of arguing about the merits of putting in new colors, which I believe should not be an issue, as it is a miniscule inconvenience for most of us, but to the colorblind haveing similar colors probably is a considerable problem, why don't we compromise a little, and leave some of the colors (the ones that do not cause difficulty for the color-blind) and change the ones that do?

Treefarn- what countries are difficult to see?
Treefarn (6094 D)
23 Nov 08 UTC
For me, Germany Italy and Austria all tend to blend together. And in the global chat, I can see some differences in color of the text, but I can't match it to colors on the map. So I never know who says what is global chat. (That problem is actually MUCH worse than the map issue, but usually nothing much gets said in global of import. If I need to know, either I ask in global or ask my wife. And I've never played a 'Global press only' game because of it.)
titansbt89 (199 D)
23 Nov 08 UTC
Hmmm...what if there was the "Germany said..." like proposed earlier? And what colors would you prefer to see them changed too, perhaps just shading them differently would produce the desired effect without making a bunch of people angry (unrightfully angry, but still pissed off)?
sean (3490 D(B))
23 Nov 08 UTC
ah yes now i remember , the map before used to be so bright and gaudy. then it changed to a washed out look and now it is a good meduim between them. i like that the colors match the text, thats a great innovation and helps a lot.
treefarn are their no on site display options for color blind to changed the hue/contrast of the display colors to make them more discernible? are you uing mac, vista or xp?

GFTD - Where the games to be WTA or PPSC?
Not that it makes a real difference, as the pot is 5 and the idea is to have the scores calculated by the llama, anyhow. Yet... there was an indication to follow or was it free for us to choose? (I ask since my 2 games are one WTA and one PPSC...)
