Chat records
I'm currently involved in a game with a handful of new players, VERY fast paced. As a result, I'm getting messages flying at me, especially over the global chat, between strategizing and asking how certain features work. As a result, some of my transcripts are getting lost in the chatlog. Is there any way to expand the viewable window of press?

NPT (Nuclear Proliferation Treaty)
Just wanted to see what you guys think of this.
Iran wants peaceful nuclear energy which is allowed under the NPT
US and much of the west wont allow this and break the treaty by refusing to let Iran have it. So whose wrong the US for breaking the treaty or Iran for pursuing it (or are they lying)?

Some Questions for Mr. Birsan
Which is your favorite country to play and why?

In your opinion, which country is best for first-time players? (thinking of my girlfriend here...)

What differences have you noticed in styles of play among countries/nationalities/age groups/gender, etc?

Do draws include all survivors?
On this site, do all draws include all survivors?
For example England has 16 and Turkey has 16 and Germany has two. Can the Germans elect to agree to a two way draw between England and Turkey.
Or is it that the draw must include all survivors and then England and Turkey would have to wipe out the Germans in order to get to a two way draw?

As background, numerous Face to Face tournaments have different rules on how votes are take (some are open like here or secret)
some votes require that 30 or 29 centers be in the majority others require a unanimous vote to pass anything,
some say you can vote yourself out of a draw
some say that there is a minimum number of centers or time past before a game can be voted to an end.
some have no concept of a draw at all but only have the vote to end the game.

What are the exact details here?

Meta-gaming: Good, bad or inevitable?
This is what Maniac has to say on meta-gaming

"what i was trying to acheive is letting my opponents and allies know that building partnerships spans games and if you stab me in one, watch out for me in another. Once that's clear, i think i would be stabbed less - it's the meta-game - not cheating!"

It's called Dolchstoß, which means "dagger stab" in German. It was used to describe the idea that communists and other domestic subversives were the real reason Germany lost the First World War. Lots a fun, people.

Question re the cost of taking over a country in civil disorder
Each player puts an equal number of points into the pot to join a game. Thus each supply centre has a point value.

When, during the game, a player abandons play and a country goes into civil disorder, the abandoned country is offered to another player at a 'cost'.

How is this cost to take over a country in civil disorder determined?
--
If the cost to take over a country in civil disorder is the average value per supply centre times the number of supply centres 'controled' by the country in civil disorder, since the SC counts are only adjusted after the fall retreat, the number of supply centres reflected as belonging to the country in civil disorder is often extremely inaccurate.

If the acquisition cost for a country in civil disorder is based upon the value of supply centres in its possession, does that take into account the actual SC count, as opposed to what the SC count might have been prior to the most recent spring season?

all that we know is that the cost is just too high. nobody has ever profited from taking over a CD. kestas can check the database to confirm this
ldrut (674 D)

Its not that hard to profit alamothe - just takes mongo diplomacy. Check my Turkey position in:

http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=4738

I got sequentially attacked by everyone and my ally went CD with the person taking it over immediately attacking me. Still better than doubled my investment.

To answer the question, the cost appears to be equal to the winnings if the game ended that minute, that is to say pot / 34 * controlled centers. Since your joining increases the pot, you can actually make a tiny profit if you can just not loose anything.

Centers are according to what your country has after the last Autumn turn, which is also the count that appears after the country's name. If your predecessor lost centers in the Spring and you pick up in the fall, you can be paying for centers you no longer have.

How important is the whole point issue in deciding to take over a position?
As for profit... I believe that I took over a France with a 2 centers and a cost of 6 and wound up with a 12 or so points in a draw when I had 5 centers some time later...but I could be wrong.
alamothe (3367 D(B))

i believe you're wrong, ldrut. i think the formula used does not allow this tiny profit. if you stay with exactly the same number of SCs as when you have joined, you won't earn anything
Caviare (123 D)

I think in an ideal world, there would be an auction to take over the position. The winner would contribute that amount to the pot.

The bids should be allowed to be negative. In other words people should be allowed to offer to take over the position for upfront payment from the pot in points. I imagine the auction would quickly move from negative values to 0 then positive values in most positions. The problem with the current set up is that the required contribution is too high.
Caviare (123 D)

I'll revise that, if the bid ends on a negative amount, the payment wouldn't be upfront. The new player only gets that amount if he doesn't drop out. If he drops out it stays in the pot.
ldrut (674 D)

Alamothe - you are correct only if the pot size does not change, but it actually grows by the size of your buy-in.

Say you take over a 5 SC country in a game with a pot of 340. It would take 340 / 34 * 5 = 50 to buy in. Your joining made the pot grow to 390 so if the game immediately ended you would gain 390 / 34 * 5 = 57, giving a profit of seven.

So with a big enough pot it could actually make sense to buy in on an about-to-end game.

My only problem is the fact that most CDs are really one or more SD smaller than the buy-in cost unless you happen to get very lucky.
alamothe (3367 D(B))
17 Sep 08 UTC
ldrut, i think that your formula is not correct. the correct formula uses into account the growth of pot and doesn't allow you to profit if your SCs stay the same
ldrut (674 D)
17 Sep 08 UTC
Alamoth is correct, I had not looked at a game with a high enough pot to see the difference. The buy-in is in fact based on the size of the pot AFTER you buy in so an immediate end-of-game is a break-even. Thanks for the correction.

This is one advantage of the PPSC system, it encourages takeover of small, troubled CD countries to try to increase the points bet. In WTA, such small CD countries have virtually no chance for a win, and so the country stays in CD.
