Tips for Newbies
On the heads of the 'Stone Age' players thread, I figured maybe this would help. The rules of diplomacy are easy, its the strategy that makes this game difficult AND fun. But newbies frequently fail to think things through.

50 pot game
Wanted to make a game for semi-noobs, so I figured a 50 pot game would be something a newer player with experience wouldn't mind joining:

Uh, a bit of confusion.
In the game bunnies in the wind I am playing as Austria and I moved my unit into on the first turn. On the 2nd turn can I move that army and still keep Serbia or not?

Rules clarification
If I order a unit to support move, and the supporting unit is attacked, will the support move revert to hold?

If so, will ordering another unit to support hold the original unit provide a second defender?

Thank you.

There was a thread a couple weeks ago pointing out that I had just started game # 4444, and that I had 666 points at the time. My points have hit another unusual number today.

Rules Question - RETREATS ("Run away! Run Away!")
Okay, say I have a unit on Spain, I'm surrounded on all sides and an attack from Gascony succeeds and I'm forced to retreat. My only retreat option is Gascony, the place the attack came from. Can I retreat there, or am I forced to destroy my unit ? Thanks!

Bounce question
Say there is an unestablished French army in Spain (i.e. Spain hasn't been taken yet), that moves to Marseilles while an Italian army is moving to Marseilles as well. The two will bounce off each other, but will Spain be completely captured by France? or will the army in Spain still have that blue box around it that shows that Spain hasn't been captured?

How long does should a game stay in "Your games"?
I got knocked out of "The Spanish vol5" (game 4433) in Autumn 1909 yet it is still listed on my "Your games" page in Autumn 1910. Is this normal, or a bug?

Just a thought. Is it possible to support an attack against your own country?

Say, you were Italy. Could you support an Austrian attack into Italian occupied Venice?

Suspicious activity in "Does backstabbing come with blindsiding"
Turkey and Austria seem to have an unearthly level of cooperation and trust in "Does backstabbing come with blindsiding"

http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=4501

More details in 1st reply.
belsherj (258 D)

I never thought that I would be one of those guys accusing of cheating, but here it goes….The game “Does backstabbing come with blindsiding” has been reduced to France, Germany, Russia, Austria and Turkey. Me (Germany), Russia and France have come to suspect the Austria and Turkey are the same person. What leads us to believe this is:
1. Austria and Turkey operate with an incredible level of cohesion and they have never taken cautionary defensive measures against each other. Turkey has the ability to deliver a crippling stab to Austria and Austria is not concerned at all (he said this in a communication to me). 2. Both Austria and Turkey use this sign to end their communications: “^__^” 3. Austria has been very vocal and somewhat arrogant the entire game about how he is going to win and how he has the power to decide who survives and gets eliminated. This is despite that fact that Austria has an equal or (at times) more powerful Turkey at his undefended rear (no jokes please). Why is he so certain that he is going to win if he doesn’t know that Turkey what Turkey is going do?

So anyway…Kestas, is it possible to look at Turkey and Austria’s communication log or something and see if they have coordinated their attacks via mail? Turkey and Austria, if this is a false accusation, my humblest apologies. Everything was just too coincidental to overlook.

I play France in this Game.

I do agree 100% with the message of belsherj. I would like to add this:

I did talk a lot with Austria (Azogar) and Turkey (cadash) and I was very surprised to notice the similarity in their writting, same level of english, short sentences, same words and same mistakes.

Azogar finishes always his sentences with the smile ^__^ and the last message I had from cadash was ended by ^__^ .

They never did any defensive moves specially at this stage of the game. I have never seen this before.

I represent russia and i am absolutely possitive that austria is pulling the strings for turkey. The main evidence behind the suspicion that belsherj has so generously posted.

My evidence has come from my "talks" with both austria and turkey. As belsherj mentioned they both tend to end their sentences with the ^_^ which normally comes after azogar says something demented. They also share a similar sentence structure that has a horrible understanding of the english language.

These are some examples of my conversation that include incriminating evidence.
Me: Spring 1905: hey what country are you from?
“Cadash”: Autumn 1905: south africa ^_^

Me: Autumn 1904: did you do that on purpose or is turkey just retarded like that
Azogar: Autumn 1904: dunno ^_^
Azogar: Autumn 1904: i think that the alliance turkey-austria is the strongest of diplomacy ^_^

As belsherj, i too am very suprised that i am calling out a cheater.

More evidence reguarding the current situation...

Some of Azogars writing...
Spring 1905: lie? i need to remember you that you attack me first moving in galicia? i need to remember you that i want to help you? i need to remember you that i offer you to retreat immediatly from galicia or i help turkey?

WhiteSammy (132 D)

Here are writings concerning Cadash...

Me: Spring 1905: hey about what year did you start playing with austria against me and please be honest i would just like to know.

“Cadash”: Spring 1905: Spring 1901, he want to take control of lands and let me take controls of seas.

i didn't my opening if i wasn't sure he help me.

i havent heard you so i think that you want to attack me.

As you can see they have the same diction and lack of sentence structure.

This has Germany, France, and I (Russia) completely convinced of foul play. If anyone has the balls to say otherwise please do and share your logic with me.
cteno4 (100 D)

Reading these posts and watching the game's progress (1901 until 1907), I find this accusation fully convincing. The moves Spring 1902, Autumn 1902, Spring 1903, and Autumn 1903 are particularly telling. Austria vacated both Serbia and Greece while the Turkish units stood in bordering territories and did not make ANY attempt to snatch up these free supply centers.

Moral of the story: If you're a multi-accounter, be subtle about it.

you guys should announce a general peace between non multi accounting nations and spend the next few years just attacking them. then resume your game once one of them has been wiped out.

well i tried to do that but belsherj kept helping him bc he said it was appeasement. I told him bs and reminded him that appeasement never stopped hitler
belsherj (258 D)
20 Jul 08 UTC
Oh god, if I ever hear any situation (current affairs or game related) compared to Hitler, Czechoslovakia and appeasement again I'm going to lose it. Anyway, I wasn't certain until Spring 1906 (when Turkey had armies next to three open Austrian supply centers and Austria just did care) ended that Turkey and Austria were sharing the same brain. There is a new day dawning, believe me.

Is there any facility to check if players are from the same IP address?
Or even, use a cookie to check if they are playing from the same computer? Perhaps we should add this to the feature request list?
Chrispminis (916 D)

There is one. But it is operated by Kestas, and by the moderators (coming soon to a theatre near you).
I assume it's all in a SQL database?
Azogar (0 DX)

i'll hope this kestas can check us ip fast as possible and see that we are two different persons. at this point i want the apologizes from france, germany and russia.

if use the same smile mean be the same person we are all the same person because we all use :) or ^_^ or 8) or :-) or 8O) or any kind of smile.

Feature request
Usually, if a player has no choice in their orders i.e. it's a Build phase and they have no builds/destroys or it's a Retreat phase and they have no retreats, then they get automatically finalized so nobody has to wait for that player to log in and finalize their blank orders.

There is one case that is missing - if a player has a retreat to make, but there are no valid areas to retreat to (they are surrounded, or it's an army and the only free areas are sea etc.) - in this case, they have to submit an order, but the drop-down list says - no valid destinations if you choose retreat, so you must choose submit.

Would it be possible in this case to auto-select that order and finalize the orders if there are no others for which a choice must be made?

UK member needed for non-Diplomacy related help
I live in the US and am trying to have a certain item shipped to me from the UK. Unfortunately, the distillery in question does not export the item in question. As I don't know anyone in the UK *not* from this site, I figured I'd make my plea here.

Is there any UK resident who'd be willing to let me use his or her address for delivery and then ship it along to me, postage and some sort of token of appreciation paid by me?

civil disorders
when i first joined this site, it used to be that in order for a country to go into civil disorder (CD), that player had to miss 3 consecutive turns. however, i just took over a country in a game that's only in the winter 1901 phase, where it is not possible for the player to miss 3 consecutive turns (none of his SC's were taken over, so he didn't have to retreat at all)... is it that if a country enters no orders for the entire first year they are replaced, or have the entire CD rules changed?
