What do the green and yellow lights mean before the power names?

Thanks :)

Cancelling a game or extending duration of turns
Hi there, is there any way to do the following?
1) Cancel a game in progress. (We started our first game mostly to test the user interface, and didn't realize that it would get underway in 24 hrs...Which leads into the next question...)
2) Change the duration of each turn from 24 hrs? We'd like to get longer turns, say 2-3 days...

Thanks!

Multi's
We had somewhere a thread about multiple accounts. Well, does this cause any worry to you?
( Also, why hasnt it cancelled itself? )

I must admit, I was wondering about this and was on the verge of posting.
There's only one nation not in civil disorder, surely they should have won by default?
(Mind you, someone like that ought to be banned by default)

eoin (360 D)

dangermouse (5551 D)

Why does it matter if someone sets up multiple accounts for a private game? I did the same myself a few days ago to play around.
Salmaneser (6160 D)
05 Feb 07 UTC
Well, it's not fun if you play with multiple accounts in a game whith other players, to help one of your accounts win most games.

I agree with that, but gmwayne's is different as he's not pretending to be two different people.

I must say though, it would be good to have a delete my account option on user home, and i will certainly write in a retire from game function if i can persuade Kestas to put a game cpanel in :P
kenny199 (100 D)
07 Feb 07 UTC
in my opinion if you wish to have a private game with yorself that is fine but if someone is monopolizing a game through having multiple accounts and not having to worry about corrupted alliances like the rest of us i think that is wrong
dangermouse (5551 D)
08 Feb 07 UTC
the retire from game function would be good regardless...if someone knows they're going to be away for a while they could retire and the rest of the players wouldn't have to wait a full day for each round to end
opripom (2853 D)
08 Feb 07 UTC
Yep, that would be really useful especially for the other 6 players that want a fair game for all.
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
08 Feb 07 UTC
It only takes 2 diplomacy phases without a user having logged on for you to go into civil disorder, and this way you don't need to clutter things up with buttons, it's just automatic
figlesquidge (2131 D)
08 Feb 07 UTC
Well, I think it would be most useful, because when I go on holidays etc i dont want my games to be wasted. Two game turns is quite a long time when you have to send support holds or loose out!
gissett (100 D)
16 Feb 07 UTC
There should be only ONE account allowed per IP address as is the case in the other diplomacy site dipbounced.com
Its not fair when countries seem to have the exact same writing style and use of language, and always manage to win by cheating.
The only option is as stated above.
WHEN will this be addressed?
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
16 Feb 07 UTC
gissett, can you give an example of this? I still haven't seen any evidence that anyone is actually doing this

I'll write something that'll allow me to detect people doing this, but without any signs of it actually being a problem it's not high on the todo list
dangermouse (5551 D)
16 Feb 07 UTC
Won't this a)prevent me from logging on from more than 1 location and b)prevent multiple users from behind the same firewall playing as their IP will appear the same to the outside world?

If both answers are no, then I'd be happy to agree with gissett. Otherwise, I must disagree. In fact, this won't even stop people from cheating. It will only stop those with access to only 1 IP. Off the top of my head, I can name 4 seperate locations (home, work, university, public library) where I could access 4 different accounts if I really wanted to.

Gissett, if you feel that you keep getting stuck with cheaters, why don't you create a passworded game and email/IM players who you feel are trustworthy to join you.
gissett (100 D)
16 Feb 07 UTC
yes but if you are logeed in via an email address, as well, then you cant really cheat unless you go to the added extra of opening several email accounts for the express purpose of cheating. Hardly worth the effort, but in my opinion, this site is extremely exposed to cheating, more so than other sites that have a way of detecting it.
dangermouse (5551 D)
16 Feb 07 UTC
I'd point out that it doesn't actually have to be a valid email address, you can enter anything. I played around making 6 test IDs (dm_test 1-6 actually) after this discussion started and played a private game against myself....which was quite boring and time consuming I might add, a lot of logging in and out.
FlamingDragon (854 D)
16 Feb 07 UTC
Hm...I think some security measures do have to be taken. But at the same time, I don't think it's wise to restrict access to one per IP, because then siblings/other family members would have to work off the same account.
dangermouse (5551 D)
16 Feb 07 UTC
Also, I know how frustrating it can be to lose a diplomacy game, especially when it seems others are ganging up on you in a way that is not to their own best interest.
I don't mean to say that it's ok to cheat, but I think kestas's limited, and uncompensated, time would be much better devoted to getting the adjudicator 100% compliant. Really we're all just beta testers
gissett (100 D)
16 Feb 07 UTC
Well if evey account has to receive an activation code or something to operate their account, then i would argue that the email addresses DO need to be valid
Other than that something has to be done, maybe looking at how other sites are handling this prob?
One good example is dipbounced.com
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))

Yeah I need to get around to reconfiguring e-mail to work
Zogg (411 D)
16 Feb 07 UTC
gissett, i already own 2 gmail accounts and one from different provider. Who could stop me from registering two more e-mails? Thats not the solution.
Binding to one IP - already many valid points have been stated - its going to work the way you expected, thus limiting user to one PC and thats not the option for browser based game.

As dangermouse said - if you want game without cheaters - use passworded game.
undef (1390 D)
16 Feb 07 UTC
There is one other solution - creating a points system: as you play games (and especially win games) you get points. This has been discussed in another thread, what i want to say is that such a system can help filter cheaters and inactive players - some of the new games would require you to have a minimum number of points. New players will only play in some games, and would have to "qualify" (gain points) to have access to higher-rated games. The higher-rated games will naturally have more dedicated players in them, thus providing the incentive to gain points (to have access to the games). This creates a self-reinforcing system.

I hope I wasn't too fuzzy and incoherent :)
figlesquidge (2131 D)
16 Feb 07 UTC
I get what you're saying, and unless stupid relatives get in my way too much during the break, i should be able to implement points for the next few weeks
undef (1390 D)
16 Feb 07 UTC
That would be great.
I hope to be able work on the interface a bit (messaging, and maybe giving orders) these days.
dangermouse (5551 D)
16 Feb 07 UTC
I don't understand how points will help stop cheating. If I wanted to raise my ranking I'd just make sure a few of my accounts won all the games I was in (which I shouldn't have much trouble doing if I'm controlling 3 countries in them anyway)
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
16 Feb 07 UTC
Thanks for the advise, and a points system will be in place eventually, but I have ways to look for people using multiple accounts that will work fine (but which I won't spell out for obvious reasons)

No-one will be automatically banned either, it'll just help highlight users. People have already mailed me about using the same IP or (perhaps more suspiciously) making moves for a friend who's sick, but it'll be judged on a case by case basis (unless it's way more rampant than I think it is, which I doubt)
undef (1390 D)
16 Feb 07 UTC
dangermouse: it's a problem, but those people won't get very far, mostly because of what Kestas said - they'll lose their stolen points eventually.
dangermouse (5551 D)
16 Feb 07 UTC
Good point undef.
The other issue with that system though is that a new user may never be able to climb out of the lower rankings because others there are cheating. Also, it actually might encourage cheating at lower levels...people will cheat to raise their rankings to a level where they can be more sure their opponents aren't cheating (quite the conundrum)
figlesquidge (2131 D)
16 Feb 07 UTC
Well, the points system will be added soon.
did we come to a conclusion as to how they should be distributed?
Worldbeing (1063 D)

or it could just be deleted.

that is a good point though: is there any time limit to the games?

kenny199 (100 D)

thats a good psych out trick like say that your all the other countries and make a country go into civil disorder because they see no use in playing a so-called 6v1 game
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
26 Feb 07 UTC
You're only allowed to do tricks that you can do in the board game, like say that country X said something that they didn't. Anything outside of this is crosses the line between good ol' Diplomacy dishonesty and cheating, please don't do it (and let me know if someone else does)

I'll look into why that game isn't getting removed, thanks for pointing it out.

Total Games Played
I like how in peoples profiles you can see how many games have been won by a certain player but i would like it if there was a total games played one as well so that we don't have to scroll down and count them all manually.

I'm sure there are other stats that people would like to know about players that could be placed in the profile, and I'm sure people are going to use this thread to post them hope these ideas can be implemented soon :)

Moving.. again
I'm wasting more money fixing problem after problem than it costs to put phpdiplomacy.net into the hands of professionals, so I decided to splurge on some relatively expensive hosting at dreamhost.com, which is well known for stability and generally being a premium host.

Sorry about this, I really hope this is the last move phpdiplomacy.net has to make..

Victory conditions
Do the victory conditions say you have to have 18 SC's or 18 units?
I know the game runs off the second, but in game:
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=178
I have taken over far more than 18 SC's, but I couldnt create the units because at the time Russia was being very awkward with his forces.

In http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=218 I logged on with 5 mins until the end of the phase.

Password protected games grossly excessive
I just looked at the 12 Joinable Games and saw that all were restricted. It seems that there should be a better balance. As a newcomer and, therefore, outsider, I find this annoying if not insulting. While I understand experienced players don't want to have their games ruined by "unlettered rustics who just fell off the turnip truck", their behavior in the restricted games isn't all that impressive judging by the number of civil disorders. Also, I think they would get a little tired playing with themselves all the time. So I recommend that new games be posted with statements as to the minimum experience level needed. There could also be statements as to the time zone of the originator or other "common interests" requests.

As several people have been posting single post threads giving the password for games where people no longer wanted to restrict membership, such as once all the people it was designed for were in. This thread should be used to keep them together. Please dont post a conversation in here, just the name, password and possibly a line on the games style, if there is one (such as Allies-Axis).

stalemate bug?!
Last autumn I was about to finnish off France in the game The Great Powers ( http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gid=332 ), but I got this message in my GameMaster chat afterwards:
Autumn 1904, Diplomacy: Your army at Piedmont attempted to move into Marseilles but there was a stalemate.
That would mean that France, with its last unit still standing in Spain tried to move to Marseilles and it came to a stalemate. However, the strange thins is that France had only one unit left standing (in Spain) and in the next spring France is of course destroyed, but suddenly it turns out that I lost Portugal to France. How can France both cause a stalemate in Marseilles and take Portugal from me at the same time?!

I've fixed an issue with game joins that was pointed out earlier, and Alex (not sure what his alias here is) submitted a cool patch which updates the game notification box and chatbox tabs, so when a user comes online or when a game changes you won't have to refresh before it becomes apparent.

There were some other updates here and there, which I can't remember exactly what they changed, so let me know if anything is out of place.
