Remove Discussion phase on the forum as a variant
The reason I want a forum without the discussion is because we already have a lot of threads, most being about steephies company, and punching shit, and I find the extra time it takes to mute them all a bit excessive.

How to start the game without it canceling
So I've been waiting for five days with six players to start a game, and as soon as it starts, I refresh and it says it's been canceled. Says I did not reach the limit of seven players. How do we actually start playing, after the waiting period is over?

Question about moves in game - Fall of the American Empire IV
Sorry for being a newbie, but as a fan of Diplomacy, I was really happy to find this site. My questions about movement - Is there an app or software so you can set up these variant maps locally and model moves/situations? Immediate question for my current game: On the Fall of the American Empire IV map, can I move a fleet from Manawut to Ungawa?

I'm reluctant to accuse anyone of multi-account shenanigans or outside communication, but something seems a bit amiss in this game. It's full gunboat, no messaging at all, but somehow one player just convoyed another player's army across the North Sea.That's a hell of a guess.

What does it mean when a player goes into civil disorder? Obviously happens when they don't play a turn, but does anything happen or is it just to notify the group that the player missed a turn?

Second Opinion on company name
Hey guys,
My company is called Broad Expert and someone recently asked me if a native English speaker would initially associate Broad with 'wide' in a literal sense, rather than the intended association with a broad expertise. The question of whether the name is proper use of English was also brought up.
Thoughts?

Juggernaut

The "Jug" is one of the most popular kinds of alliances, that between Russia and Turkey.
dargorygel (2596 DMod(G))

A Juggernaut is usually an alliance between Russia and Turkey. Some years ago it was considered THE powerhouse alliance. But enough people grew to fear it, so that the defense of 'everyone join against the evil R/T Jugg' became ALSO very popular. Create one by talking to Russia... (and others, to put them off the scent...) Deal with one by panicking for ten minutes... and then making sure that Austria and Germany have freedom to defend against it... usually Italy can assist, too, and even England.

Alliance between Turkey and Russia. Death sentence for Austria 9 times out of 10. Also pretty easy to fearmonger to get other countries to ally with you for the sake of taking it down.
Maltir (125 D)

Is "Juggernaut" the name of an alliance between Russia and Turkey only or can any two or three nations become a juggernaut?
dargorygel (2596 DMod(G))

It usually refers to Russia/Turkey. But it's not like the Diplomacy Police will come knocking if you use the phrase more loosely. Way back in the day, there were names for just about every alliance. Most didn't stick. (We used to call a Rus/Eng alliance the "Wicked Witches of the North" alliance, for instance.)

I think I've only seen it used once to refer to anything different. And that was a pretty local game. Most people will mean Russia-Turkey when they say "Juggernaut."
orathaic (1009 D(B))

The name juggernaut came from the idea that turkey and russia have their backs against the wall, so together they can steam roll over the rest of europe... (usually starting with austria and then becoming unstoppable)...

You can see people discuss it in places like the diplomacy pouch here: http://diplomatic-pouch.org/Zine/W1996A/Hand/Deposits.html
or here: https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Diplomacy/Alliances#The_Juggernaut_.28Russia.2FTurkey.29
(which also discusses The Wintergreen and The Peppermint - where Russia allies itself to either Italy or Austria - with Winter Green presumably deriving it's name from the colour of italy on the board - green, and the colour of russia on the original board game board - white).

I like their name for when France joins the Juggernaut: "France/Russia/Turkey (The Crusher, or Froggernaut)"

Think how much time we could save if we all memorized and used these names... "Hey, what about starting a Scarlet Pumpernickel?" "Naw... I am just gonna open with a regular Ham on Rye." "Hmmm... good luck with that... I hear Germany prefers playing a "Bohemian Rhapsody." "Oh no! That means that the "Foul Mouthed Bear Cub" will probably result.... And then it becomes in effect a Gunboat. (Unless someone is going to try the Yellow Submarine...)

As a side note, I've almost come to the conclusion that with so many Italys attacking Turkey that it is basically suicide for Turkey and Russia to fight. I almost feel like the juggernaut is a near mandatory alliance, especially for Turkey.
jengamaster (2132 D)

Well the real issue is that Austria and Turkey cannot be in a realistic alliance, so Turkey needs one of Russia and Italy as a friend. Like in everything with this game, it is always Austria's fault.

Reading over this thread is making me realise how many strategy/ alliance names I've forgotten.
The Jug is the only one that springs to mind that I remember. Need to read up on my theory again, now that I've come back to the site again.
But in which games... HMMMMM ;)
TrPrado (461 D)

The most natural ally for Turkey is France, but that doesn't help much in 1901.

TrP do you say France instead of England because help against Italy is more important then help against Russia?
orathaic (1009 D(B))
22 Aug 17 UTC
England/Italy working for Turkey is what your Turk wants, one to threaten Russia in the north, and one to deal with austria...

Meanwhile you have to hope france and germany can keep each other busy...
eturnage (500 D(B))
22 Aug 17 UTC
I always heard the wicked witches alliance was between Turkey and England. England, imo, is the Turk's best ally. The Austrian/Turkish alliance is a very good one. Turkey builds fleets and Austria armies. It's actually fairly stable. I don't know why it gets such a bum rap. It is particularly good in the early game.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
22 Aug 17 UTC
@eturnage Cause once you get through the early game (which i usually consider to be when the first player is wiped out - you are solidly in the mid-game) you hope to have turkey in the west med, and probably blockaded by france/england. Unable to move into the atlantic. And russia on the ropes or dead (depending on the north). And turkey gets left with an austria ripe for picking, armies presumably up north fighting whoever of france, england, germany, and russia is still up there... and while the armies are away, turkey can take austria relatively unopposed.

I think people feel this betrayal is inevitable, and so Turkey gets a much better deal from it than austria...

orathaic, betrayal is usually inevitable. The only exception is when a player decides to throw a game to you. I've won games as Austria with a Turkish ally. And vice versa.

orathaic (1009 D(B))

See your turkey should have been in the atlantic, and taken france and english centers.

But in principle, if you can break through to the atlantic then you can get a fair sweep... And the alliance is as at risk of stabs as any two-way draw would be. But getting to that stage is tough.
