Going meta in 3..2..1..
First listen, I thought it absolutely insane. The album is completely fickle in terms of style and transition from song to song. Jumping from the optimistic, humble approach of "Ultra Light Beams" to the crazy, cocaine fueled club bangers of father stretch my hands and Famous, and the switching back and forth between this is almost random.
I've figured that TLOP could be referring to Picasso, which could explain why the album appears to lack cohesion. I'm in the process of making a playlist that makes the album cohesive. There's a reason he put the album out of order too, and it's definitely deliberate considering there are chunks of songs that are perfectly cohesive almost sounding like a singular track (example: Father Stretch My Hands part 1 and 2 are very cohesive, FML and Real Friends and Wolves are extremely cohesive. Tell me that you don't hear the same motifs in the background in the transition from Real Friends to Wolves)
As far as the individual songs, I think most of them are great. A lot of them sound very strange and weird to people who aren't used to kanye's experimentation with sounds. (he's been known to be a pioneer of rap and hip hop) but after the first listen, as long as they're tolerable, it's easy to acquire a taste for. My favorite songs are Famous, FML, Real Friends, pt 2, and Ultra Light Beams. The song I didn't care for is pt.1
Again, I'm still trying to unravel everything (I did the same this to To Pimp A Butterfly, which is a complete masterpiece) but as far as I've listened and explored, I'm enjoying it.
I've also heard that the physical release will be somewhat different from the Tidal release, so I look forward to that.
I went totally meta there, but tl;dr I think it's great and definitely sparking my curiosity about what Kanye is thinking. What about you?
