Europe through History....
Came across this link, apologies as its via facebook but couldn't find it anywhere else. https://www.facebook.com/mark.delvecchio.7/videos/941931915903515/

Quite an interesting demonstration of how Europe boundaries altered and made me think it might be quite fun to do a similar time lapse of a Diplomacy game if anyone was bored....

What do my British neighbours think of the arguements presented?

Questionable diplomatic tools.
Sure, we do a lot of funny things in this game. But do people have to pull completely inane and hilarious diplomatic tactics? One question is, do they think anyone will believe them, and another is, do they believe them themselves?

I'll give one example, and see if anyone can come up with some more good ones. Here goes: How dare you build an army there! You should have postponed your build, and left the site open to show that you trust me so that I can move in later! It's only fair!

Irish Reunification
It will soon be 100 year centenary from the 1916 Easter Rising in Ireland, when insurrection finally lead to the creation of the Irish Free State in 1922, freeing a large majority of Ireland from British colonial rule.
For 95 years, Northern Ireland has remained part of the British system, as a constituent region within the United Kingdom.

Northern Ireland's reunification with the Republic of Ireland: Inevitable? Overdue? Unnecessary? A long way off? Let's discuss!

Northern Ireland Secretary
Northern Ireland Secretary Theresa Villiers has chosen to support the Brexit "Leave the EU" campaign, despite the majority view in Northern Ireland repeatedly being polled/reported in favour of staying in the EU.

Is this once again making a mockery of the British government's office of Northern Ireland Secretary? Is this role completely inept, showing how out of touch the Conservatives/British government is in its duty of care and representation to Northern Ireland?

I have run into a problem, I have discovered that I am decent in the early game and usually quickly make serious gains with little deception and lying; however I seem to have trouble preventing the remaining countries from gaining up on me. any thoughts or strategies.

Leapfrogging to quickly pick up a high amount of centers will naturally set you apart early and markedly from the others, if they are all squabbling. If you have smooth-talked all of them to fight the other way while you snap up quick centers, it is understandable that they will stop and question why they are in-fighting and making little gain while you are making easy gain.

If you recognise that talking others round is one of your strengths that it debilitiates your ability to progress mid-game, then rethink your long-term strategy. I'd suggest that you try:

1. Making slower gains.
2. Help a neighbour or ally to make slightly larger gains than yourself, to be part of a new wave that unite/'gang up' against the 'big guy', rather than the big guy being yourself.
3. Try to ally yourself and engage in early diplomacy with someone in the opposite side of the board -- and aim to work with them in the mid-late game, rather than leaving them cold and having them think that you're only intention is to solo.

Just some thoughts, hope that helps :)

Early leader syndrome is real. Let's say you're playing Germany in 1901. I think it's preferable to go for two builds (Holland and Denmark), rather than making a play for 3 builds off the bat. Watch your borders closely and try to have a reserve force of uncommitted strength to deter any potential attackers. This could be a couple armies holding in Munich and Kiel for instance, while your other three units launch an attack on a single enemy. That's the other thing. Don't fight two-front wars -- even if you can make some early gains, you'll be outnumbered in the long run.

If I'm playing any of the western powers, I aim to take Belgium in 1902 or 1903 rather than 1901, and ensure I'm in a position to hold it long-term. Greece serves a similar function as Belgium among the southern triangle of Austria/Turkey/Italy.

Yo suck, and it is most likely a generic deficiency. You been told your whole life that you be anything you want to be, but you were lied to.

Accept your fate, and consider yourself a "donor" player. We alleviate connecting your points.

That is all.

hey Byron --
one principle i've added to my diplomacy manifesto which has served me well --
always assume that at all times, everyone who is able to has decided to gang up and attack you. therefore, don't grow too quickly, and always make sure you can defend your position regardless of how many powers attack you at once. Just maintaining a strong frontline is usually enough to convince other powers to choose a weaker target. Dip players sniff out weakness like flies do shit.
ishirkmywork (1401 D)
19 Feb 16 UTC
also, never assume that favors and support you gave your allies early will return to you in any other form than a knife.
ishirkmywork (1401 D)

final tip -- when the midgame rolls around, make sure you are in 2nd place, with a strong defensive position. never 1st.
Gobbledydook (1389 D(B))
19 Feb 16 UTC
I don't really agree with leaving yourself as a strong second by the midgame. That is an inherently drawish line because it really requires a mistake from the leader for you to have any chance of winning. I prefer just running away with the game suddenly and exploiting the confusion.

really good advice. I think I will have to try both gobbledydook's advice and the general advice to control my pace. right now i tend to try to make gains in such a way Everyone knows I am making them. I can convince Russia giving me (Turkey) sev is in his best interest.

You must be playing with some pretty terrible Russia's then.

lol, that was more a hyperbolic example. It is more often I convince Germany to bounce Sweden convince Austria to move Galicia, Convince Russia to bounce BLA (a non bounce would signal a jugg to everyone else), and meanwhile convince Italy to move west against France....... but that was a mouthful... so I skipped to the end result, I have Sev and usually russia is open to dialouge in order to salvage something somewhere.

1). I think you have to consider which country you are playing. Turkey or Russia spreading out in all directions panics a lot of players, rightfully so. Austria and Germany less so. You may want to consider point two in this situation.
2). We're visual creatures, and taking larger territories looks more imposing than small ones. Turkey, Bulgaria, Rumania and Sevastopol looks much bigger and imposing than the same SC count in Turkey, Bulgaria, Greece and Serbia.

Ignore krellin he couldn't play his way out of a wet paper bag...for each potential enemy find a way to convince them that someone else, or some other alliance threatens them more than you do...of course you can only ever really trust mad old mm, and perhaps Jamiet99uk (unless Silesia is involved )

Sow discord between the people who will have to gang up on you later. Cultivate allies by taking sides in their conflicts, hoping their dependence on your assistance for further growth will blind them to the next stab until it's a turn too late. Get your stab victims moving towards the stalemate line for survival, and let the outrage of the countries in the way build into someone's willingness to throw the game. That's one way to play, anyway.
MajorMitchell (1874 D)

I'm not sure but Jamiet99uk might have this ultra cunning trick where he deliberately under performs at certain points in the game which forces his ally to continue supporting him, I've seen him play Germany really badly in spring 01 so he loses Belgium to France and Holland to England, but lo and behold by 03 he has them both back because he's effectively blackmailed Russia into supporting him against both England and France.... I have this weird thought that all along he was somehow manipulating things without me knowing how

Diplomacy is about building relationships. What seems to be happening is that you're making a good first impression, but once people get to know you they conclude that you're a excellent candidate to attack.

What you have to do is work out what it is about you that makes others want to give you a kicking. Then you can either make changes to your style or, if that's too difficult, make a special effort to kill off those likely to find you most disagreeable first, or make sure someone else comes across even worse than you.

To have a hope at doing well in this game you need an unshakeable belief, regardless of any evidence to the contrary, that your fate is primarily in your hands. That's great for smug bragging rights, but also means when it's going wrong the first place to look is at yourself.

No way around that, really. The moment you believe your fate belongs to someone else you have lost the game.

woody (843 D)
21 Feb 16 UTC
Yup. Make sure you're friends with your neighbour's neighbour. That way you will always have a common target with someone else.

That only works till the end game though; you need to make sure you can reach 18 before the other or you've sown enough discord that you won't be faced with all remaining players focused on you.

Space Programme
Is the Space Programme simply one of humanity's greatest achievements? Or should it be seen as a sign of our failure, that we can spend so much money, energy and resources sending a few men and even fewer women into space, yet we couldn't organise this mass effort to get rid of world hunger or end absolute poverty?

Is the Space Programme the biggest contradiction of our time?
