Hot to find a player who played a particular game.
Hi,
I played a anonymous game. In that game one player resigned and he was replaced by another one.
In the game page I can only find the new of the replacing player.
How can I know who was substituted in that game?

Congrats everyone
Some of you may recognise my username - I haven't played here for a fair while now but I used to be a regular member here. One of the reasons I left was because of how toxic this forum used to be, and I'm really pleased that it's got better, to the point where I might even play another game or two on here soon. Really though, this is just a big props to the mod team.

How balanced is classic diplomacy?
Do you guys think the map of the classic diplomacy is the perfect balance? Are their any locations that are to powerful and should be needed in your opinion? Obviously there are strategic spots that give you an advantage.

Deleting an account
Is there a way to delete an account? I forgot my original username/password combo and created a new one, but was able to get logged back in under the old. The usernames are really similar so I don't want people to think that I am doubling up (I haven't put any in the same games). Just wondered since I would like the stats to all go to this account, and most likely won't use the other one at all.

New variants?
Are there any new variants coming in the near future? The current ones are getting a little old and I think it would be fun to have more options.

No immediate plans, although we have discussed getting Colonial or Classic with fog of war going over here. I don't think either of them are likely to be added soon, though.

The focus of webdiplomacy is Classic diplomacy, and the slight variants to classic which are common and well-respected (eg gunboat). We have a sister site with a focus on variants over at vdiplomacy.com.

@ATC - I know it isn't a priority but maybe finding variants that go more with the "classic" focus and removing the non-classic variants could be a neat step. I'd suggest:
Fog of War
Build Anywhere
Classic 1v1 (most balanced as shown by stats)
Classic 3 player (most balanced as shown by stats)
Crowded (in place of modern)
and possibly allow the community to select a annual variant that stays on for 1 year and is replaced yearly......

on another topic what would I need to learn exactly to be able to help you? like exactly exactly. Not saying I will go to youtube or something; but I can atleast start learning and maybe in a few months be able to do simple jobs.

I like that there isent 16252616 variants to try here.
3-4 maybe.
Classic
Gunboat
Chaos
Chromatic
And what would be the gem that i realy would play a lot!

@CommanderByron Crowded has nothing to do with the classic diplomacy. Modern gets closer to that...

Actually, the 'classic' rule book does discuss what to do when you have less than 7 players.

And the 'classic' 6/5 player variant might be fun.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
08 Feb 16 UTC
It does, but I don't think the advice is actually good. It seems more like it was put there to satisfy a publisher who is all "well, we can't sell a game that needs exactly 7, can we?"
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)

We played the six player variant (play with italy in CD) once. It wasn't an experience I would recommend.

thats every gunboat on this site lately... oops
Chaqa (3971 D(B))

I don't really think of gunboat as a variant. Sure, it isn't the standard ruleset, but it uses the standard board. Hell, our "default" version of Diplomacy here is a variant if we look at it that way, since we allow press during builds and retreats, at least until recently in all games.

I love variants, but not all of them are great. I think we need to have some more, though, especially good ones like Colonial Diplomacy.

We have crap-tier variants here right now in World Dip IX, Ancient Med, and American Diplomacy. Only American Dip is even roughly balanced.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
08 Feb 16 UTC
@ATC - i agree, and this site is not limited by not having 7 players online a the same time; or being able to find 7.

But by that logic you could argue for auto-pausing games when a player leaves, and not playing by the CD rule - i'm looking at implementing a few of these on vdip, so they will be available. So if you want them here, well that decision can be made later.

I don't know how balanced they are.

@Chaqa, i almost entirely agree (though i like ancient med, and i think it is fairly balanced - haven't seen the stats for it, but it has a 1v1 half and a triangle half, which allows enough self-balancing to be a great variant) Colonial and maybe Youngstown, would be great additions imo.
Zybodia (355 D)

I always considered Ancient Med to be *too* symmetrical, to the point of being boring. (That and five may not be enough people for diplomacy to save you from the symmetry.)
orathaic (1009 D(B))
08 Feb 16 UTC
I think ancient med is east vs west, in the same way as classic has a western triple and a southern/eastern triple.

Rome vs Cartage, and Greece, Persia and Egypt forming the Eastern triple. At least from my experience.

I'd like to see WWIV 6.2 added... vdip has slowed down a lot lately and filling a map that big isn't really feasible anymore over there.

I proposed the idea of smaller sized games such as 1v1 and 3 players to satisfy the livegame crowd who may not be able to get a classic 7 players committed but still want to play. the reality is that there are deadtimes on this site where almost no one is online. Having the ability to start 1v1 games or 3 player games would allows our alienated usership in those times to still enjoy a live game experience. The proposal of build anywhere and fog of war is pretty self explanatory. the proposal of Crowded is to have a larger variant that still takes place on the classic map. in essence a game similar in size to modern but on the classic map. the point of chaos is exactly as for Crowded, having larger games on the classic map. (honestly Chaos would be harder to fill than World Dip) the last part is the most important by allowing the community to vote on a new variant (out of several pre-selected by the dev team) and thus satisfying the changing community overtime. If it suddenly becomes a desire to play UN style games maybe the voting base would decide to have World Dip, WWIV, or Imperial Diplomacy. But if the community has a large desire for rule changes and not map changes than the voted variant could be something as simple as Fleet Rome or Ankara Creasent

Netherlands Diplomacy Association organised some demonstration games.
Quite a few new players, including the two youngest I've ever seen at a board, 12 and 13. We also did a live (!) broadcast. Photos and video can be seen at our FB group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/996646063678823/
