Tomorrowland
How do we get there?
KingCyrus (511 D)

After recently watching the movie Tomorrowland, which I heavily recommend, I have once again started to think about where our world is going, where it ought to go, and how we should go about getting it there. I intend to be an engineer, so I would like to be a part of building the physical future. What will it look like? What do we, as individuals, countries, and other entities need to do to bring it about?

we need to find new resources, we need to master cold fusion, we need to go further into space.

Going to see the movie tomorrow (heh).

But the future technology as I see it lies in two key directions: microprocessing and energy.

A lot of the technology we're able to develop is limited in its capacity by either energy inflow or storage. Batteries/power cells can only be improved on so much, but small, efficient energy storage is always valuable. Then there's the simple problem of production: producing the energy to be stored/utilized. Ideally, I think highly efficient solar capture or safe fusion capture would be the ways to go, though if it's even theoretically possible to directly convert generic thermal energy (or temperature) into useful power that could have an incredible effect on what is possible.

The other avenue: microprocessing (in my mind) involves integrating computing technology with people and making that technology on a scale that works. We're already making strides in that area, and I think the next "big breakthrough" will have to be with some sort of neural interaction, possibly first done through prosthetics. If a computer that can both send and receive neural signals is developed we could do a hell of a lot. Either that, or developing A.I., but that's a whole different caboodle.

WD and I gave legit answers... 2/3 i guess.

but there is so much to do for the rest of the world, if we start looking for utopia now many will be left behind. Go see Elysium (actually don't it SUCKED)
Went to see it, partially on your recommendation KC. The kids and I enjoyed it thoroughly. My 8 year old made me laugh out loud in the movie though. Right in the middle of Hugh Laurie's monologue, he leaned over & said "This is a really long sentence!" It was definitely a shot in the arm after a really challenging year. I had been feeding the wrong wolf.
The line "We have an epidemic of obesity And an epidemic of starvation. How does that even happen!" was probably the best of the movie though.

The movie seemed to strike a cord with the nostalgic optimism of the past vs. the stark realism (pessimism) of the present. It doesn't seem that many people are looking forward to a better tomorrow in our country.

How do we get there? They guys who are advocating doing away with money altogether are sounding better and better. There was an interesting TED Talk from a Dutch PhD (she is quite easy on the eyes too!) who went without money for a year to see how it would affect her lifestyle. She found that she had much greater interdependence since she was bartering her skills directly to producers who had what she needed. At the end of the year she opened up her wallet again and resumed her lifestyle but completely changed careers.
Here is the link, her name is Carolien Hooglien.

Ahh...Hypocricy If Fun
The game....on this blessedly peaceful website, that is all about enhancing the game of diplomacy, is "F. you krellin you racist piece of dirt"

Just because a child uses "F" instead of "Fuck" doesn't mean we don't know what you mean. And a Mod that fails to punish the creator and silence him/her for the good of the web site is a hypocrite. Just saying...

Brotherband Gunboat 15 - dragging the game out!
Im playing brotherband gunboat 15. Everyone is anonymous and there is no in game messaging. Almost every turn a number of people do not confirm their orders and leave them unconfirmed. So every turn runs the full 24 hours. Why do people do this? Am I missing an important reason?

So hypothetically..
If we can have threads for spamming random words, Bible verses and all that stuff, wouldn't it be more amusing and useful to have a thread dedicated to non-game related advertisements?
I've discovered over time that there's some interesting and useful services offered by webdippers and I'd love to find out more, if nothing else.

Tips for getting the solo
Hey guys,

Recently, I've come on top of a lot of games, but eventually had to draw it out because the other players would unite. Eventually, the game comes down to three players and you can tell just from SC count who's threatening to solo, so those players will always unite against you. How can I break through this, or set up situations where players are not uniting against me in the first place?

Gunboat?
Hey, as a rather new player on this site, and I am still rather confused as to what "live gunboat" games are. I understand that live is 5 min phases, but I'm not sure what gunboat is supposed to mean. Thanks for the clarification!

Why are Scandinavia and Germany separated in World diplomacy IX? Is it so Baltic Sea and North Sea are touching, but couldn't we just have a 4 way split like the seas in anc med?
In the classic variant Denmark touches Sweden, so I was just curious about why it doesn't there.

I haven't played much so almost all of my games have been on the classic board. I've noticed, though, that most games are on the other boards. Why are they so popular?

World Diplomacy Challenge
I don't know if I was supposed to advertise in the non live games but anywho. I am proposing a world diplomacy game that has a twist. It is WWIII and each country has taken sides. You can be with the United Countries of the World or the Separatists. The sides will be posted once I get 16 more players

Neutral Italy in a game with just six players
A nice option to have when first setting up a game might be "in instances when there are only six confirmed players, Italy will remain neutral - YES/NO". This fall back would of course be included in the game description (ie: anon, no in-game messaging, RR50%, etc). Any opinions?

If a winner-takes-all game ends in a draw, are points still split equally?
I can't find anything in the FAQ that says this explicitly (although it implies they are)
