Cruise Time...
Seeking advice from people that have taken a cruise. My last one was 20 years ago, and I am picking between Norwegian, Royal Caribbean and Carnival. Carnival seems cheapest....but...is there a reason? Is it volume discount, or am I going to be eating greasy burgers and slop instead of the fine cuisine I might get elsewhere?

What is it with Asian Planes?
So another plane crashed in Taiwan. At least they know what happened with this one. Is it pilot error? Poor upkeep? Illuminati? Something must be responsible for the comparatively high number of plane crashes in Asia.

This is blatant racism KC what is wrong with you?

The relatively high rate of 'they' planes crashing (and keep in mind such comparisons are culturally biased) is obviously due to the history of oppression of 'they' by the evil western patriarchy. This terrible weight of oppression (and asians getting fatter) often exceeds the lifting force of the wings. We should send them some money to fix this problem.

Randomizer (722 D)

The Wall Street Journal had an opinion piece that crashes are becoming more common as a result of pilots relying on autopilot and not maintaining their skills. It was a warning that the same thing will happen with some self driving cars since those systems are currently being designed for a human driver to be instantly ready to take over and not doing something else while in the car.

The World's 10 busiest air routes, ranked by passenger numbers (2012-13 data):

1. Seoul - Jeju (10.1m)
2. Tokyo - Sapporo (8.2m)
3. San Francisco - Los Angeles (7.7m)
4. Sao Paolo - Rio (7.7m)
5. Beijing - Shanghai (7.2m)
6. Sydney - Melbourne (6.9m)
7. Tokyo - Osaka (6.7m)
8. Tokyo - Fukuoka (6.6m)
9. New York - Miami (5.5m)
10. Hong Kong - Taipei (5.5m)

So of the 10 busiest air passenger routes, SIX of them are in Asia. Perhaps they have quite a few air accidents because they have a LOT flights? Statistically the "comparatively high number" of crashes you claim may not be comparatively high at all.

Funny that none of these seem to be coming from Indonesia, where two flights that crashed came from...

@Jamie number of passengers has little to do with the relatively high number of crashes (unless the planes are overcapacity, which is a completely different problem) a more accurate measure would be the busiest airports by NUMBER OF FLIGHTS:

1. O'Hare International Airport Chicago, Illinois, United States
2. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Atlanta, Georgia, United States
3. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport Coppell, Euless, Texas, United States
4. Los Angeles International Airport Los Angeles, California, United States
5. Beijing Capital International Airport Chaoyang, Beijing, China
6. Denver International Airport Denver, Colorado, United States
7. Charlotte/Douglas International Airport Charlotte, North Carolina, United States
8. McCarran International Airport Las Vegas, Nevada, United States
9. George Bush Intercontinental Airport Houston, Texas, United States
10. Frankfurt Airport Frankfurt, Hesse, Germany

only ONE asian airport is in the top ten, which means more planes are crashing PER FLIGHT to an asian airport.
KingCyrus (511 D)
05 Feb 15 UTC
And once again, none of those flights that crashed were on either list.
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)

Routes isn't the same as hub traffic either. I'm guessing that the 10 ten busiest routes in terms of passengers are also up there with respect to the highest number of segments flown. Those Asian airports probably specialize in fewer intra--Asia routes while the top 10 number of flights are more cosmopolitan.
Yoyoyozo (95 D)
05 Feb 15 UTC
1. Rio de Janeiro São Paulo
2 Jeju Seoul
3* Melbourne Sydney*
4 Chicago New York
5 Fukuoka Tokyo
6 Sapporo Tokyo
7 Los Angeles San Francisco
8 Jakarta Surabaya
9 Cape Town Johannesburg
10 Osaka Tokyo

The Airport statistic is more accurate because it includes ALL flights, not just one route. Just becuase Brazil has the most flights (from Rio to Sao Paula), it doesn't mean it's busy. For all we know, that could be it's ONLY route. When you include international flight, you get a better picture.

Like Randomizer said, I suspect a lack of stick-and-rudder skills is the culprit, in addition to ATC more or less forcing pilots to fly into storms. Nothing short of a typhoon will bring down a civil airliner, but even the smallest rain shower has the potential to freeze the pitot tube over (causing the airspeed indicator to fail). A distracted pilot combined with autopilot and erroneous instrument readings can easily bring down even the most advanced airliner. Autopilot is VERY useful and its use should continue, as it drastically reduces workload during tedious phases of the flight by taking over the labor-intensive but simple task of holding a specified airspeed, altitude, and heading.

Either that, or the fucking Red Chinese are up to something. Never trust a communist, especially in numbers greater than one billion.

It's really important you used the term "Red Chinese" because of course everyone would otherwise assume you meant there was a conspiracy based in Taipei bringing down aircraft.
