What is happening with this site???
Some 2 years ago when I joined Webdiplomacy you could play 3 games in a row during one night. Now, you cant get players for even one game. Everyone is just typing on forum. Maybe if we type about it, we can overcome this problem somehow?! Play people, play.

abge's Craft Corner
My gf and I made a small table. Nothing intense; the pieces were pre-cut, we just picked what we liked and assembled and painted it. I'm pretty sure it ended up being more expensive than just buying one, but it was a fun project. http://tinyurl.com/lm89ydg

Anyone else have a fun project they're working on they'd like to share?

That sounds fun, and a good introduction to woodwork maybe. I'm not currently doing anything serious, I do want to somehow make a melangeur for making chocolate, but I hardly have the skills needed for that.

@jm

Your program looks interesting, for sure. I'm concerned, though, about the price. $60k for an unaccredited degree seems like a risky investment, especially in an area that tends to be an afterthought for many IT companies. What sort of ROI do you expect for your students?

Also, in your professional opinion, are the Save and Ready buttons too close or too far from one another?
jmspool (100 D)

We're working on the tuition. We've got more than $100k in the scholarship fund and looking to double that in the next month. Also, we're helping students with low-interest loans.

Entry level salaries for UX designers start at about $45,000 and go to $80,000, depending on location and skills. Many companies are now seeing design as a highly competitive element (thanks Apple!). GE has told us they'll hire every designer we can produce. So has Disney and IBM. We've gotten a lot of support from companies in every industry.

If we do a good job, our students will have many choices for their future. Paying off a reasonable school loan will be no issue at all.

I think the save & ready button are just fine. Personally, I find the order of support moves to be counter-intuitive, but I understand why it works that way.

Nice table. I'm going to need to sand down and refinish a giant solid oak table I got for free on craigslist (free because it weighs 400lbs).

I'm (very) slowly restoring a 1971 Dodge Challenger... That is a project and a half right there.. A smaller project I've been pseudo planning for a while now is building a kayak rack in my basement to just organize the kayaks better and open up a little more space.
Haven't started yet, but a friend of mine has promised to teach me the basics of leather-working. My wife loves books and I would like to start doing leather book covers for her hardbacks.

I'm glad to hear you're aware of the tuition issue.

Like anything in computers, you can make good money, the trick is getting in the door. That's usually accomplished with a BS and a cursory glance at Indeed shows that what most UX careers require. Now, personally, I think it's ludicrous that so many Computer jobs require a BS. I would much rather see people trained at institutions such as yours (although at a much cheaper price!). What concerns me, though, is whether companies will recognize such a certificate. It depends, a lot, I suppose, on how good your corporate outreach is.

Nice table Abge.

I've just returned home from yet another night of working on my big "craft" project -- building three rolling platform, a small table, a large judge's "bench" and a witness stand for my daughter's marching band props.

When I am done....I shall forbid myself from touching a wood-cutting device or drill or anything even remotely related to wood work for at least a year....meaning my wife, again, is shit out of luck if she wants me to finish the trim along the floor in the rooms I laid new flooring in.

I struggle to get excited by gluing 4 legs to a piece of board, in all honesty. It looks indeed like a table, although its success is determined by its stability which is hard to judge. As a first step it appears well done.

What is a lot of fun and good for expanding skills and ideas is buying old furniture on ebay and taking them apart. It gives you an excellent feel for the use of different joints, pins and glue, and afterwards you either have a nicely restored piece of furniture or a supply of decent wood for your next project.

Yup, the same one. I've been neglecting it for a while, my master's program has been eating up most of my free time. The last time I drove it I broke part of the rear end... whoops.

Octa - If you think a table is 4 legs randomly glued to a piece of board...then I really would hate to see what sort of hill-billy hell-hole you live in....lol
Octavious (2701 D)

@ krellin

The pieces were pre-cut. I may be wrong but I don't think abg was making his own mortise and tenon joints. Insert slot a into hole b and glue seems the order of the day. It is the finish that is more worthy of praise, although the photo doesn't do it justice
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Yeah, as I said, it wasn't a major undertaking. The pieces were precut, but they didn't come together. It did involve measurements, sanding, drilling, cutting, and whatnot. I'm just saying I didn't lathe the legs or anything crazy like that.
krellin (80 DX)
19 Sep 14 UTC
Octa - seriously...WTF is wrong with you? Dude put together a table. So what if he didn't grow his own f*ing wood!!! When YOU make your own table, post it for comparison.

UNTIL THEN...stfu...seriously.

Can't anyone say something nice without a bloody cunt-rag trying to spoil the mood???

Right, well, moving right along...

I look forward to when I have a bigger place to do more work like this, but even this project required moving all of the furniture in our living room, so it will probably be some time before I get a chance to do it again.

An article describing how press ties into the strategy of a high-level player. (I played with this guy years ago on Bounced. With all due respect to THM, MM, Ebay, VI, etc, he's still the best opponent I've ever faced).

Open CD Positions
We have a ton of open CD positions tonight. Take one, take two, take ten. Take them all if you'd like. The best (subjectively, of course) positions are those near the top but the ones at the bottom are all still in contention in their respective games. If a game is broken, send me a PM.
