Does anybody accept this story in the literal sense? i.e. that a man lived 900 years and the earth flooded entirely and there was a boat full of animals to ensure the continuation of all species?

There is evidence to suggest that the story is true - that it reflected not a flooding of the world, but the breaking of the Bosphorus and creation of what is now the Black Sea. One of the places that people search most often for the ark is the Caucasus and Turkey.

Well, I don't doubt that some flood somewhere happened and the story could be based on that. What I'm talking about is the exact literal interpretation as stated above.

Yeah, the Euphrates flooded big time and the Semites wrote about cleansing humanity as a metaphor which covered up their slaughtering of the remaining hunter-gatherers of the area when they wanted more land to farm.

A lot of cultures around the world have devastating flood stories. Why the fuss about one more or one less? It's not like there isn't going to be a lot more once the ice caps melt off.
