Anyone working on cutting edge science, that is not top secret?
Pretty much what it says on the tin.

The webdip forumites tend to be more educated, or just smarter, than your average person, but are there also scientists around here?

Replacement German Needed for SoW Game
The SoW Study Group Game, gameID=133722, finds itself in need of a new German. It's not an enviable position but some good play and canny press could get you into a draw perhaps. Anyone up for the challenge can post or PM me.

RIP Bob Crow
There are not many people who achieve as big an impact on the lives and minds of the British people as Bob Crow. I did not often agree with him, indeed I can't remember ever agreeing with him, but he was without doubt a man of principle who fought tirelessly for his beliefs and earned no small amount of respect. Rest in peace.

Need two players for a solid full-press game.
We're looking for two reliable players—either with no CDs or with very few CDs that can be explained away—to fill out gameID=137177. We’ve played several games together with largely the same group (a few rotate in and out each game), and they've all been good games with lots of press. They're pretty balanced as well--no solos yet.

Geographical regions
I have questions about which geographical regions countries are considered *primarily* part of. The UN and other references don't give fantastic guidance about this.
Putin33 (111 D)
11 Mar 14 UTC
Iran - is it primarily part of Western Asia(Persian Gulf); Central Asia; or South Asia?

Afghanistan - Central Asia or South Asia?

Turkey - is it primarily part of southeastern Europe or Western Asia?

Cyprus - same question

D.R. Congo - primarily part of Great Lakes/East Africa or Central Africa?

Sudan - primarily part of North Africa or East Africa?

Venezuela/Guyana/Suriname/Trinidad - primarily part of the Caribbean or South America?

Mexico - primarily part of North or Central America?

The Baltic countries - primarily part of eastern or northern Europe?

Romania - Central or southeastern Europe?

Is Switzerland to be grouped with France/Western Europe or "Central Europe" (Austria/Czech/Germany/Poland/Slovakia)?

Cameroon - Western or Central Africa?

Chad - Same question

Egypt - should it be grouped with the Levant/Western Asia or North Africa?

Where does Australasia cut off? Is Fiji included? Is Australasia synonymous with Melanesia + Australia & New Zealand? Does Australasia simply mean Aussie + NZ?

These don't really have defined answers. It's pretty vague and there's large overlap between various regions.
Iran: Western Asia
Afghanistan: Central Asia
Turkey: Western Asia
Cyprus: Southeastern Europe
DRCongo: dunno
Sudan: North Africa
Trinidad: Caribbean
Venezuela/etc. (not Trinidad): South America
Mexico: Central America
Baltics: Eastern Europe
Romania: Southeastern Europe
Switzerland: Central Europe
Cameroon/Chad: Dunno
Egypt: North Africa
Australasia: I think typically this is Melanesia + Australia + New Zealand, there's not really a point to it if it's just those two states. I don't think Fiji is really included

Source: Geography classes I'm taking at LSU this semester; our textbook groups these by region. I dunno some African ones because the book just had a massive section on all of sub-Saharan Africa (probably to reduce redundancy in covering the colonial legacy in the area).

I know all of these are "crossroads" states to an extent, but I'd also note that Afghanistan, Mexico and Switzerland in particular are crossroads states more than the rest.
Iran: west Asia, a bit south too.
Afghanistan: west part of south Central Asia.
Turkey: mostly Western Asia. Only the west side of the Bosporus strait is European.
Cyprus: Europe.
Dr Congo: central Africa.
Mexico: Central America.
Baltic: Finland, Sweden, and Norway are north European, while Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia are eastern, and kind of northern.
Romania:southeastern Europe, south of Ukraine and border on Black Sea.
Switzerland: probably Western Europe.
Cameroon: west part of central Africa, borders Atlantic.
Chad: central North Africa.
Egypt: North Africa.

Cyprus is so bloody close to Lebanon & Syria though it's hard to justify as part of Europe except culturally, esp. if Turkey is not part of Europe.

Thanks for the responses.
I agree, just going off of the groupings I've seen in GEOG 1001/1003 and elsewhere. A lot of it is somewhat arbitrary with these border countries though so I doubt that you'd be looked at funny if you decided, for instance, that Cyprus belonged in Western Asia (with Turkey), Afghanistan belonged in Western or Southern Asia, etc.

I would say Mexico is certainly North America. I do not have a strong opinion on the rest.

Incidentally, Putin, you left off one of the most interesting cases, Russia. I can only assume this is because you already have opinions on the subject. What are they?
Putin33 (111 D)
11 Mar 14 UTC
Russia, Eastern Europe. The bulk of the population lives west of the Urals.

Another problem case for me is the South Caucasus. The fact that Armenia & Georgia are Christian make it seem to me like they're like Cyprus, European but in Asia.
Incidentally the "Russian sphere" is a separate region in my geography textbook. It's typically just considered Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and the Caucasian states. This would center it primarily on Eastern Europe like Putin says.

I've had the Cyprus debate in pubs a couple of times, one of which went on for hours. I think the conclusion we came to is that it doesn't matter. Still, as a good rule of thumb, when in doubt go with the people who live there.

This does create a couple of anomalies, such as Egypt (which to me is blatantly obviously in Africa although when there I never met one Egyptian who agreed), but such is life.

Iran: Persia
Afghanistan: Terroristland
Turkey: Bird, irrelevant to discussion
Cyprus: Turkey, see above
DRCongo: UN geographer missing, presumed eaten
Sudan: Central America
Trinidad: Boxer
Venezuela/etc. (not Trinidad): Axis of Evil
Mexico: NAFTA
Baltics: Viking
Romania: You spelled Rumania wrong
Switzerland: Impassible
Cameroon: Not sure about this one.
Chad: Hanging
Egypt: You know the pyramids are like right next to a Pizza Hut right?
Australasia: Put another shrimp on the rice paddy.

I'm guessing that this thread is a troll to highlight the idiocy of defining the geographical world into regions that have been artificially established by groups like nations states, corporations, the news media and academics.
