What do you mean by 'Democracy'?
Inspired by conversation with YJ I have taken upon myself the task of educating and discussing the concept of 'Democracy' with the community here. So, what do you mean by 'Democracy'? and conversely what things stop a system being 'Democratic'?

Disbanding units due to no orders.
If a player has units to destroy and he does not submit orders for it. How does the game choose which units are destroyed?

Calling a.Hispanic a.spic or a.wetback, etc will get your ass beat down just as quickly, if not quicker, than nigger, depending on place and context of use.

All you racist apologists.are.encouraged to go *directly* to your nearest Hispanic community and let fly with a few spics and.wetbacks.

Please arrange for subs for your games ahead of time, as your recovery *will* be lengthy.

Sure. But that's what Nigee did, so trying to compare the two is disingenuous. Again, I don't agree with Nigee's comments, even given their context, but there is an importance to context nevertheless, and you seem to be unable to comprehend this.

"I suggest a boycott of.... what does Spain actually make these days?... oranges and pickled vegetables! That'll show 'em."

What an incredibly ignorant comment. Spain has the 13th largest economy in the world and its companies have a huge international presence which has yet to be affected by the crisis. Spain exports a ton – and that's with insanely high unemployment.

"But that's what Nigee did..." No, that's not what Nigee did....he used offensive racist language as a witty joke! OHhhhh ho ho ho...haa ha hahaha... I see...that's makes it's OK...got it...the apologists win the day, I guess. As long as I use racist terminology in a witty joke....like, "Let's just put those n's back on the slave ships and send 'em back to Africa so a few white guys can play football! Haa ha ha..." that would be a witty, acceptable use of an offensive term? Do I understand your nuanced use of racist terminology now?

No you appear not to understand at all. Not surprising, seeing as you quoted the very phrase I corrected immediately after I realised my typo...
Maniac (189 D(B))

Nigee - I got the joke first time around.

I'm not sure if you remember 'in sickness and in health' and 'till death do us part' and 'rising damp' and even Bernard manning. All of them used racist language and the writers used to say they're not racist as the characters who were portrayed as racist were the stupid characters. They may have a point (as you do), in context their racist remarks weren't racist in was more a case of laughing at the outdated opinions of racists. But, not everyone understood it. Black children would be called coon and nig-nog at school the following day and everyone would laugh. The words remained and the context was lost.

I don't wish to ever stifle free speech or restrict joke telling, but I want people to be aware of the damage words can do. If people then continue to use racist words, like Jim Davidson, for example, I will conclude that he either doesn't understand that his racist words can cause damage or doesn't care. As it happens I don't find him that funny so not going to see his shows isn't a big loss to me.

@ Maniac

A quote from old Jim Davidson that seems rather relevant

"New comedians tend to not [cover] subjects that might be deemed as racist, sexist and homophobic and all those other 'ists'. I think comedy is the victim.

'I think it is too safe. Or it can be just as bad as I was in the 1970s and it hides behind the I word, irony... 'I was being ironic'. I went to university, I can't be racist.'

'I never used to be ironic, I never knew what it meant. I just did it to have a laugh, become rich and famous... and get better-looking women... and I would like to seriously apologise for any harm it did"

@Maniac - I think most people understood what I was saying and I found the pious and sanctimonious comments amusing, if anyone were to be offended on this forum I think they may have taken a hit way before they read my post.
I do appreciate some of this stuff is lost in translation across the pond or the Channel.
I think people got confused when I said I was married to various women of varying nationalities, they thought I was in some way using this to justify racism, some stuff I realize goes straight over peoples head but it's a bit like that with my humour, a bit hit and miss.
Of course I was parodying a comment made by Octo who said I was making regular comments about being happily married to someone foreign.
To be fair unless you had seen the initial comments that would have been difficult to follow.
The old sitcoms back in the '60s and '70s were confronting working class attitudes to racism and I think they did it pretty well..... they made people think about language and they gave ethnic minorities an opportunity to get on the TV, even though I wince when I watch them now I think at the time they were probably a big success.
Jim Davidson is just a ****.

@Octavious - "A quote from old Jim Davidson that seems rather relevant

"New comedians tend to not [cover] subjects that might be deemed as racist, sexist and homophobic and all those other 'ists'. I think comedy is the victim."

I think Jim is right here comedy can suffer when people stop using race, gender etc. In Nigee's case I think he could have said The Spanish instead of Spics and not lost the humour. Other jokes just don't work without a victim. For example...

Octavious is so dense when he plays Russian Roulette he uses six bullets. If we substitute Octavious for a race or ethnicity that a we want to put down its still funny (allegedly) but it can also erode that race's self esteem if they are constantly the butt of the joke. It may only be casual racism that isn't meant to harm anyone, but it can harm people over time.

I was at a poker tournament the other night. The seating positions are allocated randomly. Out of around 60 people there were 9 black players and they were all on my table. A couple noticed this and joked about the Casino opperating a segregation policy. Another guy said they'd just have to resort to robbing one another. Most of us are regulars and friendly (if not friends) and this was just some guys having the crack. But I did think that this kind of humour is can be damaging and I didn't engage, and I wasn't going to call them out on their racism either. Maybe I should've done.

""New comedians tend to not [cover] subjects that might be deemed as racist, sexist and homophobic and all those other 'ists'. I think comedy is the victim."

Stupidest comment ever. Have you ever seen a non-white and/or female comedian? Pretty much the humor is about race (if non-white) and sexist issues (if non-male).

I just heard an interview with the owner of a comedy club - he was asked why the comedy world seems dominated by men at times. His answer? Because women tends to get on the stage and instead of telling good jokes, they tell jokes about their sex, or they male-bash, etc...i.e. the constant sexism in female comedy grows old...but it's certainly out there, whether or not it gains traction to go big.

Honestly, I don't mind race and sex in humor, just as *I did not mind* what Nigee said. I only called him out because none of the good Liberals around here that like to call out bad behavior on the part of known "Conservatives" around here wouldn't have done it...you don't eat your own, I guess.

I called it out to keep you peeps honest...which is a *very* difficult task, let me assure you...

@Maniac - I would say the situational segregation joke was funny (observing the past juxtaposed on the present), but the robbing each other, not as much as it has implications that are beyond the pale.

At Draugnar - the robbing each other joke was amusing but I didn't laugh as I was thinking more about the casual racism and if I should say something - moment passed before I had decided and by then it was hard to say - "you know that joke 10mins ago..." I think I should confront racism more, but also don't want to lecture or be pious. As it turns out guy who said it later told me he was suspended from work for hitting a fellow employee who had referred to his ethnicity several times in 'jest', he had taken it for a couple of months and then snapped. Other guy was sacked. Just shows you what trouble we can get into.

On "Elysium" and the Current Trend in "Message Movies/Shows/Books/Etc."
I'm curious if anyone here's seen the film, and if so, what they thought. I haven't...I've read the plot synopsis (though really I figured out most of it from the trailers that ran before Star Trek: Into Darkness) and read/seen reviews...and it seems like the kind if "message movie" I've grown to hate, namely, one with all the subtlety of a sledge hammer. If you've seen the film--fair or foul assessment? And what do you think of this trend in moves/books/etc.?

A Simple Question
Suppose we broke up into real-life nations based on that basic political spectrum test a lot of us just took, so there'd be a Nation of Krellin & Co., a Nation of Abgemacht and Associates from the Green Corner, etc. Aside from the fact every Green Corner citizen (I can't tell if your corner is blue or pruple, krellin--damn colorblindness!) would want to kill me...would this be for the better, Likes with Likes, or would this just lead to worse consequences?
