The mods rock
Although I can't get into details until the investigation is complete, I just want to say that I am thoroughly impressed by the mods on this site. I know that many of us, me included, will bust their chops, but they are a great group that take care of business. Thanks!

Mod Status: Thanks Kestas!!!
Hey folks, check out the reinstated mod status! Who knew sixteen little dots could be so useful.
Also, just a simple reminder that the mods speak as players most of the time and when we are speaking as mods, we usually sign, "webdipmod" or some such at the end.

Once again, awesome mod status.

report multiple player player in anonymous game?
Hey,
is it possible to report a player for playing multiple nations or at least of-game agreements in an anonymous game?

The Level of Competition of WebDip: Better/Worse/Comparable?
I personally believe that the level of competition has increased steadily. Since I've been here, I've seen many new players who have raised the bar such as Cach, sly, Tasnica, 8foldWay, CStein, ghug, gen. lee, fairfax, SD (gb only), and many others. I think that it might be harder to raise your GR substantially now than when the site was new. Not to start a flame war, but I don't know if the old upper echelon would have gained as much GR if they competed with the current crop.

Procedural Question
Lets say that someone wants to start a tournament. And in the tournament, the mods would have to get involved by making sure that every one of the 7 players played 7 different countries. What is the proper procedure? Do we ask the mods in advance? I'm guessing yes. If so, then how long in advance? Or is this something that is not acceptable? Thanks in advance.

Any interest in a small 7-man tournament?
Could be gunboat, could be full press, public press.

I'm thinking 25 or 50 buy in per game.

Dear All Mass Media,
Please stop displaying the Newtown shooter's name to the public. The fact that you all force us to remember him is what motivates other wackos to do it again. People like me that have had their lives affected by killing don't appreciate it.
Octavious (2701 D)
28 Mar 13 UTC
Do you think it matters to them whether it's their name in lights? I'd always assumed their chief motivation was to make an impact on the world. Whether his name is mentioned or not (and to be honest I have no idea who he is myself) is surely a secondary thing to your actions being the centre of attention?

I fear the only way to prevent his name being mentioned is to regulate the press, and you would lose far more than you'd gain by doing so.

They also released the name of an under-aged rape victim. You really think they care about what's decent?
Draugnar (0 DX)

"They also released the name of an under-aged rape victim. You really think they care about what's decent? "

In some states, that is a violation of the law (Ohio is one of them).
Celticfox (100 D(B))
28 Mar 13 UTC
Well that's why people were upset at CNN and Fox News. That Ohio rape victim.. they released her name.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
28 Mar 13 UTC
@Octavious... the point is that his actions should not be the center of attention; his victims and their families/survivors should be.

@CF ... I don't think they do; I think they should. They are the ones that feed us every truth and lie that we can conjure up, and eventually people realize that Fox News and CNN are incredibly stupidly biased on a whole new level because of the lies they spread (among others). Maybe they should try to, you know, do the right thing, since they are the biggest source of flowing information we've got.
Octavious (2701 D)
28 Mar 13 UTC
@ bo_sox

Really? The last thing I would want as one of the families would to be the centre of attention. Nor, as a member of the viewing public, would I be all that interested in discovering that people who have every reason to be very upset are, in fact, very upset.

The actions themselves are of interest, though. What happened? Why did it happen? Could it happen to me and what can I do to stop it? That is the focus I would want.
Draugnar (0 DX)

Don't be surprised if the Ohio AG doesn't seek (and possibly get) indictments against the heads of the news agencies to make a point.
SacredDigits (102 D)
28 Mar 13 UTC
I'm pretty sure they're going to face some consequences. What happened is they were doing a live feed of the trial and one of the guilty parties said that he really wanted to apologize to (name). And then beyond that, at least some affiliates rebroadcast that speech without editing (although I believe those affiliates were outside of Ohio).

I wonder how much guilt in the release of the name goes to the defendant who said it and how much goes to the cable stations that broadcast it.
Draugnar (0 DX)
28 Mar 13 UTC
I would place none on the person who said it. It was said in a court of law and not intended for public usage. All of it should go on the cable news execs who should know to delay their feeds and have someone at the wheel ready to strike out anything that may get them in trouble. It's not like this is some unknown little law hidden in the back pages of the ORC. This is well known and has been for a long time. So having someone on the button that can bleep out obvious legal violations and giving a time delay should be a requirement for them to even have a live feed int he courtroom.

And CNN's entire coverage of the verdict was all about those "ppor boys and their futures". They are fucking rapists! Talk about promoting and empowering rape culture! What the fuck, CNN? She gets no sympathy for being treated like a fucking rag doll toy tossed from man to man and raped repeatedly then raped again by spreading the picture on the internet, but these fucking felons get your sympathy? I hope they get fucked by their cell mates in jail! Teach them what the real price for rape is.
Celticfox (100 D(B))
28 Mar 13 UTC
@Draug Yep. I that case is a glaring evidence of the rape culture spoken of in that thread. Remember it's those poor boys who are the real victim that that slut of a girl :(

@Octavious .. "The actions themselves are of interest, though. What happened? Why did it happen? Could it happen to me and what can I do to stop it? That is the focus I would want."

What CAN you do to stop it? Little to nothing. We need to be sure that there is no motivation to do it in the first place. This crazy eternal fame that Lanza and Holmes and Cho get is unreal. I shouldn't remember the name of Alfred Murrah. We don't need these names floating around and saying "if you pull off the worst of the worst, you're going to be remembered long past your time." Some don't care if that's as heroic or hell bound.

We need to change it and remember the event. Remember the people that were killed - don't make people the center of attention, just remember them for what they were as innocent people - and stop playing up the villain. Like Draug said, CNN did it with Steubenville too.

That girl at Steubenville is going to have the rest of her life taken away from her because of the sensationalism (good verbiage, Gun). Wouldn't it be nice if someone just went neutral and found neutral people with neutral editors. Opinions go in the Editorials. Seems really simple; if you are an opinionated writer, write an editorial.

We need an unbiased media outlet like a thirsty man needs water. Maybe someone who combines conservative and liberal sources and compiles a story equally based on both sides.
TheFlyingBoat (2743 D)

What about the communist side? What about the view of the fascist? Their are constantly viewpoints that are being excluded. Ever single person has their biases on issues. It is your job to determine what those biases are, and determine what parts of what they say you believe as a result of it. The closest things to unbiased news you can get is something that has no analysis, and just facts. Like the news station would be: Hugo Chavez died, 2 kids were murdered, and the sky is blue. But even then it is biased, because the word murder has certain negative connotations associated with it? Is that a bad thing in your eyes? Look unbiased media doesn't exist, everything has biases associated with it. 1=1 is biased because it perpetuates a system that was endorsed by a certain group of people while excluding those that prefer a different system, unless those people adopt that system as well.
Celticfox (100 D(B))
29 Mar 13 UTC
@TFB There's a big difference of calling something a murder and having obvious political slants.
TheFlyingBoat (2743 D)
29 Mar 13 UTC
Refer to my point regarding the beliefs of communists and fascists not being represented. I am telling you that no matter what there will be biases and you need to deal with them. There is no universal truths in actions. Perception shapes reality.
Celticfox (100 D(B))

I also said I understood that it wouldn't happen. Did you not read that part?
FlemGem (1297 D)
29 Mar 13 UTC
@TFB - you're making a lot of strong points. My preference is that people just be honest about their biases: "This is the story from my perspective. I'm calling it like I see it. Maybe you see it differently, but here's where I am". In that sense, I appreciate Rush Limbaugh more than NPR.

Another noob question, what's the appeal of no in-game messaging?
Just seems to me that exchanging private messages, and people lying to you with them, would be the most interesting part of the way the game plays out. No messaging at all feels like it would take away all the diplomatic relations in the game, which are what the entire game is based on!

So what's the appeal, and why are they so popular here?

Were a lot of combat planes used in WWI?
It's for a speech for school in English of 4 minutes, tomorrow, just came up with the subject combat planes and I think I know enough about WWII but if someone could tell me about if, how and how much they were used in WWI and any other useful information (everything welcome but the speech will be rather general, just as deep as it needs to be for 4 interesting minutes) that would be very helpful!

Reduce CDs, Increase Takeovers, Improve Site Considerably
Consensus looked like:
- When a player would CD (or on a first move), instead of a CD, the player is booted and the phase length resets.
- Changing the buy in to encourage take overs once vacated -- first 3 centers free.

HELP! Game refuses to unpause!
We've got a game going (C-3PO) that has been paused for a day or two now. We're given the options: draw, unpause, cancel, and for whatever reason when we click unpause nothing happens. Under one player it lists 'Votes: Draw, unpause, cancel'--this player also missed the last phase. Could anyone let us know how to get our game unpaused?
