The mods rock
Although I can't get into details until the investigation is complete, I just want to say that I am thoroughly impressed by the mods on this site. I know that many of us, me included, will bust their chops, but they are a great group that take care of business. Thanks!

Mod Status: Thanks Kestas!!!
Hey folks, check out the reinstated mod status! Who knew sixteen little dots could be so useful.
Also, just a simple reminder that the mods speak as players most of the time and when we are speaking as mods, we usually sign, "webdipmod" or some such at the end.

Once again, awesome mod status.

report multiple player player in anonymous game?
Hey,
is it possible to report a player for playing multiple nations or at least of-game agreements in an anonymous game?

The Level of Competition of WebDip: Better/Worse/Comparable?
I personally believe that the level of competition has increased steadily. Since I've been here, I've seen many new players who have raised the bar such as Cach, sly, Tasnica, 8foldWay, CStein, ghug, gen. lee, fairfax, SD (gb only), and many others. I think that it might be harder to raise your GR substantially now than when the site was new. Not to start a flame war, but I don't know if the old upper echelon would have gained as much GR if they competed with the current crop.

Nerdiness is definitely becoming more mainstream. I stall take offense at "dweeb" or "dork" though, and "geek" often seems to have a connotation of the nerd's lifestyle without the intelligence.

As for the people on this site, I'm pretty damn sure that anyone playing diplomacy online qualifies and thus it's probably more of a compliment than anything. It was a ice rant nonetheless.

WebDiplomacy is in a classical recession. The distributed points are skewed in favour of "good" players, which is quite natural. The problem is that there are a lot of players with so few points the cant participate in the number of games they want to, and only in games with a high risk of CDs, which will decrease the interest in the game altogethe.

There are a number of players with lots of points, but who cant find enough games on "their level". To end the recession each active account should get a point-boost of say 100 or 200 D as a one time-bonus.

My 2+ cents.

But should you be increasing lending at a time of austerity, you're just trying to buy you're way out of the recession.
CDs - is that Certificate of Deposits?
josunice (3702 D(S))

Let's prioritize developings a "fix" for CDs, then... It has been discussed to have the system boot a nation that will CD on phase process and extend the phase by a length. Coupled with reducing the cost of buying in (I suggested first three centers free making small nations free and larger ones where ground will be lost not punitive). This can also be triggered on the first move, too.

@zultar: Among nerd accomplishments, you forgot their inspirational defeat of the Alpha Beta fraternity.

I was merely echoing your own "Ok, since I'm a big nerd" statement earlier in the thread. I agree with ghug that anyone playing diplomacy online probably qualifies as a nerd. On top of that, I read comics and sci fi, and play D&D, M:TG and bridge.

It was a nice rant though, and reminded me of "What have the Romans ever done for us?"
@Nesser: Are you playing in the Masters tournament? There is a lower (but unfortunately not non-existent) rate of CDs and high quality competition. Perhaps even more importantly for the long term, you get a chance to meet and play other good players which may in turn get you into invitational games.

Yeah, we're all nerds here. I just wanted an excuse to bust out the :P emoticon.

@ghug - Where I come from, geek is actually a socially viable nerd. Both have the intellect, but geeks can get non-nerd/geek girls to date, have sex with, and even marry them. So take a nerd and add in a quantum of social acceptability and you get a geek.
ghug (5068 D(B))

Hmm, I've heard it's an East/West thing. Geek is definitely the more derogatory one out here.

I am East Coast and mid-West at the same time. :-) But in the real world it is the Geek Squad while in Hollywood it is Nerd Herd. So do you live in the real world or LaLa Fantasyland? :-)

Riddle me this - I see in all time ghost ranking two players that jump out like a sore thumb, both who have not completed a game since 2010 - TheMasterGamer 103 games played, 49% wins and Rait 124 played, 50% wins... no one is approaching stats like that today...

Procedural Question
Lets say that someone wants to start a tournament. And in the tournament, the mods would have to get involved by making sure that every one of the 7 players played 7 different countries. What is the proper procedure? Do we ask the mods in advance? I'm guessing yes. If so, then how long in advance? Or is this something that is not acceptable? Thanks in advance.

Any interest in a small 7-man tournament?
Could be gunboat, could be full press, public press.

I'm thinking 25 or 50 buy in per game.

Dear All Mass Media,
Please stop displaying the Newtown shooter's name to the public. The fact that you all force us to remember him is what motivates other wackos to do it again. People like me that have had their lives affected by killing don't appreciate it.

Another noob question, what's the appeal of no in-game messaging?
Just seems to me that exchanging private messages, and people lying to you with them, would be the most interesting part of the way the game plays out. No messaging at all feels like it would take away all the diplomatic relations in the game, which are what the entire game is based on!

So what's the appeal, and why are they so popular here?

Hello all, I'm in need of one sub for The Masters Tourney. I'll probably need more eventually, so feel free to show your interest. Would include taking over two current games and 5 games yet to start.

Were a lot of combat planes used in WWI?
It's for a speech for school in English of 4 minutes, tomorrow, just came up with the subject combat planes and I think I know enough about WWII but if someone could tell me about if, how and how much they were used in WWI and any other useful information (everything welcome but the speech will be rather general, just as deep as it needs to be for 4 interesting minutes) that would be very helpful!

Reduce CDs, Increase Takeovers, Improve Site Considerably
Consensus looked like:
- When a player would CD (or on a first move), instead of a CD, the player is booted and the phase length resets.
- Changing the buy in to encourage take overs once vacated -- first 3 centers free.

HELP! Game refuses to unpause!
We've got a game going (C-3PO) that has been paused for a day or two now. We're given the options: draw, unpause, cancel, and for whatever reason when we click unpause nothing happens. Under one player it lists 'Votes: Draw, unpause, cancel'--this player also missed the last phase. Could anyone let us know how to get our game unpaused?
