A Call for Blind Diplomacy Voting (only see your own votes)
Diplomacy should be carried out through your moves, and if press is allowed, through your press, but not through voting signals. Some conspiracy theorists believe their are hidden meanings in unusual votes -- in my experience it is b/c of us cell phone players with fat fingers... Gunboat should not have this communication tool, and in press you can reveal or lie about your votes all you like...

An actual philosophy variant
Choose a philosophical school of thought. If the philosopher fundamentally changed during his writing career, you must also choose which text(s) you will be following. Then, you must hold to that philosophy in all discussions and movements. Why not PP, 5 D, 50hr phases, WTA, orders must be announced. If someone can demonstrate how a proposed action goes against your philosophy, you may not take that action and must do something else. Critiques?

Even though he has respectfully declined, I believe that Draug would make an excellent moderator. If he chose, I think he would be fair and impartial. Just don't piss him off.

hahahahaha ... good one jimgov ... "don't piss him off" ... fucking hilarious!

I've seen him get pissed off when he AGREES with someone! (Well, not "seen" literally)

You guys really take this serious, don't you? I really don't see why everybody gets so excited about a debate...
dubmdell (556 D)
29 Mar 13 UTC
If you want impartial judges, choose three judges who know nothing (or very little) about the topic(s). For example, Defense of the Ancients vs. League of Legends. I have only cursory information regarding either, so the debaters would have to give me information regarding both before even launching into arguments. Naturally, external sources would be discouraged for an impartial judge, even looking up terms they don't know, so that the arguments can be judged on their own merits.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
29 Mar 13 UTC
That's a quite bad idea. You wouldn't be able to tell who's lying, overstating, understating...

what non-consequential topics are on the floor, anyway?

I don't think we have gotten that far. If we are going all political (conservative vs liberal) or something else entirely seems to be up for discusion.

@steephie - overstating versus understating? Uhhh...isn't the whole concept of a debate to minimize your opponents arguments, while stressing the importance of your own? The idea is that there are two sides of an argument which *opinions vary on*, and so you construct arguments around the importance of the various facts and opinions to support your side...but ultimately the entire process is simply about over and understating things. If were anything else, it would simply be a math problem.
jimgov (219 D(B))
29 Mar 13 UTC
@steephie - not necessarily. Make the debaters show their work. Make them link to any "proof" that they have. Let the opponent show why their information is better that the other.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
29 Mar 13 UTC
Ok, true, I misread, I thought external sources were not allowed at all.

Still though, you're looking for 3 dudes who know nothing about something, want to waste their time following links on it AND are unbiased... Good luck. Again: Why does everyone care about this?
philcore (317 D(S))
29 Mar 13 UTC
I don't care about it. I wouldn't want krellen or YJ to not post for a year. They're both entertaining. And that's what I'm looking for when I'm waiting for phases to turn. Entertainment.

"For example, Defense of the Ancients vs. League of Legends."

Finally, something worth talking about in this thread.

DotA was a great concept with terrible execution. They did the best they could being a WCIII use-map-settings game, but it really wasn't worth playing.

LoL is an amazingly executed DotA clone. A little too n00b friendly, imho, but still great fun.

If you actually enjoyed all the terrible features in DotA, then HoN is probably for you. Between the terrible graphics and bad UI, you'll feel like you never left 2005.

I don't have much experience with DotA II, but from what I hear, it seems good. Of course, it came out so late that most DotA players have invested so much money into LoL or HoN they can never switch to DotA II.

If you've never played a DotA clone, I'd suggest you give both LoL and DotA II a try and just go with the one you like more.

Steephie, I meant the judges using extra sources outside of the debates in order to form their opinion. Clearly it's impossible to prevent someone from overhearing something on the news or looking subjects up on wiki prior to/ during judging, but a judge's use of external sources (outside of what debaters bring into it) could be discouraged. It also could not be required of judges to read sources that debaters provide, however, a debater may wish to point out misinformation and draw the judge's attention to something in a source worth perusal. Considering that judges cannot be required to read sources, I would encourage debaters to use quotes of relevant information. Anyway.....

Jimgov, philcore, Celtic, wanna hop in on some debates for fun? We may actually snag krellin with "Kirk vs. Picard!"

Server upgrade
Thanks for everyone's patience during the server upgrade, for some reason it took them three hours, so it took much longer than I expected. I've added time to all games, if anyone spots anything out of place let me know.
On the bright side once this has settled down the server should have more capacity..

How does one leave a game?
I have no intentions of leaving any games I'm in, but I invited a friend to join the site and he joined a bunch of games, then decided he just didn't understand the game. Rather than stick around and ruin things for everyone, I've convinced him to just leave but I don't see that option anywhere. Help?

Why does anyone play live gunboat games?
Don't get me wrong, they're fun enjoyable things to do, even though I'm not too good in them myself, but, NMRs and CDs are rampant, and you get opportunistic wankers that refuse to draw/cancel even though everyone else has their draw/cancel votes up and game ettiqute demands that they do so, so I ask, why does anyone play them?

Repeat Messages?
Did the new updates come with a feature for preventing posting the same messages you already did? I posted the link to the email the mods about unpausing games, but I ended up having to add something to the beginning of the post, to get around a message that told me to make repeat messages.
Doesn't matter that much, but it seems like it could be annoying at times

Can someone explain the draw of the Gunboat?
To me, the entire thrill of this game is in the formation of alliances and the negotiations between players. With that being said, I absolutely don't understand the draw of the Gunboat games--it takes out the best part. If I'm looking for pure strategy, I'll take games like Axis and Allies (despite the "luck factor" or even chess). What am I missing about Gunboat games?
