A Call for Blind Diplomacy Voting (only see your own votes)
Diplomacy should be carried out through your moves, and if press is allowed, through your press, but not through voting signals. Some conspiracy theorists believe their are hidden meanings in unusual votes -- in my experience it is b/c of us cell phone players with fat fingers... Gunboat should not have this communication tool, and in press you can reveal or lie about your votes all you like...

EoG: Around the World Gunboat Tournament, Game 8
Tasnica (3366 D)
11 Mar 13 UTC
This is the part where, as a defeated nation which never surpassed five supply centers, I write a longer EoG than anyone else.

Player: Tasnica
Nation: Libya
Result: Defeat, 2010 (10th Place)

PPSC Points: 0
Townshend Points: 0
Continent Points: 0

-2000-

Libya, on average, is not the strongest of the World nations. One of only two to share a border (with Near East), it must defend this border while facing stiff competition from its neighbors over neutral centers. Additionally, it must compete with Europe over the Med, a very valuable space that leaves those who do not occupy it vulnerable. Finally, it is very much a "central" power, with four other nations in close proximity. Just two of said four deciding to go after Libya early on spells serious trouble.

In a bid to survive to the midgame, when Libya's central position can become more of an advantage, I decided to make an opening gambit. Said gambit was an invasion of the Near East. Not only would this negate any early offensive of his against me, but it would also send a clear message to my neighbors that I would not be an early threat, and would give me a clear route of expansion.

Naturally, things go horribly wrong right from the start. Both Algeria and Ethiopia are left open to me, Europe moves into the Med, and Near East offers me a support hold. Oh, and Near East is also handed both Armenia and Afghanistan on a silver platter (at least he can't get both). In short, the plan I am already halfway committed to ends up having me turn down free neutral centers and attack the one player to directly offer me peace, who is also going to be quite strong.

At this point, of course, I'm not going to be in great shape if I change my course, so I say "screw it" and Leeroy Jenkins my way into Saudi Arabia.

Other fall moves are not too surprising. Ghana grabs both Morocco and Algeria, and Kenya attacks South Africa. India attacks China, which is not what I was hoping for, but Europe ends up with no builds, which is nice.

I build two fleets and hope for the best. Alas, both Ghana and Kenya build all armies, which is absolutely terrible, but a minor consolation is that Russia and India go for armies as well.

-2001-

I abandon Chad, knowing that I can't defend it anyway, and lo and behold Ghana decides to throw everything at me. Jesus Christ, Ghana, is it not obvious that I'm not after you? Go invade Europe or South Africa or something, knowing that your flank is secure.

Russia kindly sends some aid, and I get the Med, but Kenya grabs Ethiopia, so I'm now doomed to disband.

When fall moves arrive, my strategy for this game comes to a hilariously spectacular collapse. Ghana, being a dick, attacks me with full force and cuts my Med support to Saudi Arabia for the hell of it, causing me to lose that as well. Kenya offers me a support hold, but I know I'm screwed. The Near East will be wanting revenge, Ghana is bloodthirsty, and no one is likely to come and save me in a timely manner. Well, I guess that's the end of the game!

-2002-

Well, at least I get to give Ghana the finger on my way out. I manage to predict all his moves, and defend Libya against his entire army despite not actually having a unit there. Kenya is coming to help, and NE still has no fleets, so maybe I won't die quite so fast.

lol jk

In the fall, Kenya betrays me as well (because why not?), and I find myself in the familiar situation of "It's a gunboat game and everyone is trying to kill me". I absolutely love this familiar situation. It makes me want to play lots and lots of gunboat games. Especially ones where I'm Libya and surrounded by everyone, and not chilling in the middle of the ocean like Oz.

On the bright side, at least Ghana doesn't get any more of my stuff. He still gets a build, though, by waltzing into France. Really sucks to be Europe in this game, too. Also, apparently the Brazilians are in Quebec at this point. Oh, and the USA is almost dead. Least I'm not the first to go.

-2003-

So, being Libya, and under attack by three nations, all of whom are stronger than me, I die for sure this year, right? Well, I certainly think so, and try to make a break into NEA to go hide in Great Britain or something. It doesn't work, and Libya falls to Ghana (though Kenya does betray Ghana as well and take Chad). Good game, everybody!

And then fall moves happen.

What.

The.

Fuck?

So, apparently God descends from Heaven at this point and says "Thou shalt not be eliminated from thy game." Because that seems to be the most rational explanation.

So, first thing that happens. Ghana, instead of double support holding Libya, tries to move into North Sudan. Okay, reasonable enough. But Kenya bounces him.

Second thing. I try to retake Libya from Med, and using Egypt to support move. Shockingly, NE does _not_ hit Egypt like he did the turn before, so the support goes through.

Thirdly, Kenya, who quite recently was attacking me, suddenly decides that the best use for his Chad unit is to support Med-Libya, which allows me to overcome Ghana's supported move into Libya. His army is disbanded, and I lose nothing in 2003.

Wow.

Also, where was this luck back when I _had more than two supply centers_??

-2004-

This time, NE decides to hit Egypt. But Kenya cuts Ghana's support, and Libya survives. Ghana has the Med now, though, so I'm screwed right?

Lol nope. Kenya double support holds me in the fall. In other news, the Americans are dead, and Pacific Russia and Europe are both in huge trouble. Argentina and Quebec aren't looking good, either. Am I actually going to end up in the Top 10?? How the hell is this happening?
Tasnica (3366 D)
11 Mar 13 UTC
-2005-

NE decides that he's tired of poking me and runs off to invade Russia. This proves surprisingly successful. Ghana is stuck, and actually backs off a bit. PRussia, Antarctica, and Argentina are all dead. Why am I still alive?

-2006-

You know, this whole "not dying" thing would be a lot nicer if I actually had any hope of expanding, or if anyone was interested in drawing the game with me still in it. As things stand, the only reason for me to stay alive seems to be to piss off my neighbors, which in all fairness is a decent enough motivation.

Also, I know that NE doesn't consider me a threat anymore when he just leaves the entirety of his homeland empty while I'm still sitting in Egypt.

-2007-

Near East ends up in a rather hilarious situation, where he has units all over Russian territory but still can't get into any of his centers, even when Russia NMRs! He goes home to rethink his life.

Meanwhile, Ghana is like "Grr! I want to get something!" But he can't, and Kenya casually grabs the rest of Africa. Sucks to be you, Ghana! Maybe you should have left the Libyans alone, asshole.

Kenya doesn't quite keep the rest of Africa, though, and loses South Africa to the South Africans. SA is getting pummeled by Oz, though, so Kenya doesn't have much to worry about. And you know what that means...

-2008-

Yep! Kenya decides that the time is right to kill me. I sit there and take it like a bitch, because, well, I'm completely surrounded and literally can not do anything else.

Then fall comes and... wait, what is this? Now _Ghana_ is support holding me? Sure took his sweet time.

I am really curious if I'm actually going to make it into the Top 10, though.

-2009-

Spring moves are hilarious. Both Ghana _and_ Kenya support hold me. Also, the Near East CDs out of nowhere. Seriously, is this divine intervention or something? Apparently it is amusing to shoot down all my hopes and dreams in the first two years and then leave me to linger on for another decade.

Fall, Kenya inflicts CD vengeance upon Near East. SA is still alive, so no Top 10 yet.

-2010-

Spring, Ghana and Kenya both support hold me again, but I know my days are numbered.

Fall, Kenya finishes me off, simultaneous to Oz killing South Africa. I guess that means I tie for 10th place? Good enough for me!

-Afterward-

India NMRs for two turns in a row in 2011, which gives China a second lease on life and Kenya free reign to conquer the Near East. Minor skirmishes occur elsewhere, but the trend is Kenya's gradual expansion and the elimination of minor powers. India NMRs yet again in 2012, but the only conflicts between major powers are between Canada and Russia, and between Kenya and Oz.

These are halfhearted, however, as following the elimination of Ghana and Near East all of said powers are willing to draw. This results in a surprising seven-way draw, with no one apparently interested in taking out China and India, despite the fact that they are relatively small and still fighting each other!

Kenya gets Africa, Oz with Australia and Antarctica, Brazil with South America, and Canada with North America.

-Closing Thoughts-

Near East: One thing that sucks about gunboat is that sometimes a player decides to go after you from the very beginning, as part of some strategy or reaction to some past experience. You, alas, happened to be my "chosen enemy", and as fate would have it I chose quite poorly. My actions essentially forced you to turtle for half the game, though eventually you managed to give Russia a decent fight. Alas, attacking Russia by land from the south is really damn tough, and you would have done well to get a fleet into the Black Sea (admittedly difficult given how I hindered you building fleets). Props for not doing anything stupid in retaliation against me, and even maintaining a peace of sorts later on.

Ghana: You son of a bitch. You ignored an obvious potential ally (A Libya attacking Near East and building fleets? Let's kill him!), and I made sure you paid for it. It was very satisfying outmaneuvering you in my home centers while Kenya expanded like crazy, and your eventual offer of peace was too little, too late.

Kenya: The closest thing I ever had to an ally in this game. Sure, you turned on me in 2002, but I was already pretty screwed, and you more than made up for it by keeping me alive and helping me inflict vengeance upon Ghana. Well played, though I am admittedly curious as to why you didn't continue the fight against India and Oz. Securing the Bay of Bengal alone would have put you in a fantastic position.

Europe: You clearly went for an anti-Russia strategy, which didn't end up working out all that well (probably in part because of me distracting the Near East). You also got screwed over by Ghana, though I was quite impressed that you still had four centers at the end of 2003. You definitely put up a good fight.

Russia: You were the army guy, besting Europe and Near East on the field of battle and even expanding into Asia later on. You were definitively lacking in the naval department, though. What were you thinking when you dislodged Canada out of NEA in 2011, only to let him retreat into Britain? I feel you could have benefited from another fleet or two, especially in the Black Sea, instead of those armies you sent into Asia (which ultimately only netted you Afghanistan).

India: Seriously, of the four turns following my defeat, you NMR on three of them? And you still get included in the draw? You lucky bastard.

Fate of Libya's Starting Units:

-Army Libya-

My namesake army took Chad right off the bat, only to be massacred in North Sudan during the 2002 Kenyan betrayal.

-Fleet Egypt-

After participating in the opening assault on the Near East, this fleet was disbanded in the Arabian Sea in response to Ghana's invasion in 2001.

-Army North Sudan-

The elite forces of my nation. After leading the charge against Saudi Arabia, they returned to Egypt to hold it and Libya against attacks from all sides. They held out for six years before finally being destroyed by Kenya in 2008.

I aspire to write such prolific and insightful commentary, Tasnica. I enjoy your EoG's immensely.

Another extremely brief EOG from me. While I am happy to be part of the draw, I am amazed that I survived. I think there is some incentive for players that are still in numerous games to get as many that can end over ASAP.

Tas basically wrote my EoG for me. You can find it under "Russia."

I do think that I probably could have built more fleets, and the dislodging of Western Canada's fleet was a really stupid decision that resulted from trying to enter orders at four in the morning on a smartphone while being harassed by slightly drunk people. That is all I have to say on that matter.

Good game, all.

China EOG ~ Can anyone match Tasnica's prolific output?

2000

Pretty amazed at the start of this game, I wind up getting Korea and Japan. With no builds first turn, PAC Russia will be a sitting duck. India elects to take Lanzhou, so of course I retreat to Calcutta. I am amazed he didn't forsee that. 3 builds, which all become armies. Retaking Lanzhou is critical.

2001

I exchange Calcutta for Lanzhou. P.R. Elects to head south, which likely means Russia will seize east Siberia.

2002

Ok, P.R. keeps pushing south, but Russia decides to not punish him by taking E.Siberia. I might be in some hot water soon, with an enemy on both the west and north. P.R. takes Korea in fall, but that allows me to retreat to Vladivostok.

2003

India took Afghanistan last year, which fortunately gives him the inclination to press westwards against N.E. This is a huge help, because even with only three units P.R. Is all over me somehow. I retake Korea in spring, and am lucky that P.R. does not go for shanghai in fall. This allows me to build a fleet. It's not all sunshine and puppies, however, as India starts moving back east.

2004

P.R. Disbands his army in Heijongang, which is the beginning of the end for him. Yaktusk is open, so I look to take it in spring. This allows another fleet build, and paired with P.R. Disbanding his fleet, should lead to smooth sailing. India moving his fleet to Thailand is a bit disconcerting though...

2005

Ok, I am screwed. W.C. moves to Sea of Othostok for some reason. India moves to SCS (supported by Oz no less!), which means Lanzhou is a goner for sure, as he now has four units to my three. All India has to do now is cut Ghanzhou. At least I will make up for it by taking E. Siberia. Oh, and W.C. moves a second fleet west in Fall. Joyous.

2006

Southward migration to push off India.

2007

Finally lose Ghanzhou. This isn't looking too good... At least until Autumn, when N.East and Russia bounce in E.Siberia!

(To be continued....)

Brazil: I got the better of Argentina early on as of 2001, started immediately clashing with Western Canada once I contained South America, and the draw was finalized shortly after I gave up Mexico and made peace with my northern brethren.

Ghana Game 8 gameID=104125

I didn't like Ghana. Probably because I mismanaged the nation, but I found a nice stalemate line in 2003 against Kenya and decided to hunker down and hope the threat would pass.

.... it didn't.

Oz - Finished as part of the draw with 12 SC.

2000 - Bounced with Frozen in Spring and took Indonesia and New Zealand in the fall. +2 Fleets. India went for Thailand, instead of bouncing at Indonesia -- I am appreciative.

2001 - I make little progress with Frozen, India moves to South China Sea, so I move back to Indonesia to cover the northern front.

2002 - India moves to Northeast Indian from SCS, I'm not sure what hes up to, but hope he doesn't decide to team with Frozen against me. I move Indonesia to Northeast in Autumn to cut any support, but India moves back to Bombay. I am relieved at this point. South Africa also started encroaching on Frozen, which should help my standoff with him move in my direction now.

2003 - I manage to take Leningradskaya but screwed up and let Frozen take New Zealand. South Africa takes another of Frozen's SCs and I look set to take back New Zealand and start expanding across Antarctica.

2004 - Pacific Russia moves into South China Sea, I move back into Indonesia to at least bounce with him. He ends up attacking China anyway. I take back New Zealand and finally make it to SCs. I build an army in Victoria.

2005 - Antarctica looks to be easy pickings, South Africa has managed to take most of it, but is engaged in the south of Africa and only has a single unit in Antarctica. I take Casey and South Pole and send a fleet around the edge of the map to hit South Africa from the other side. In the north, I support India into South China Sea. I take India's side in the war between India and China mainly because India only has a single fleet and poses the least threat to me. I build a fleet in Western Aus and another army in Victoria.

2006 - South Africa convoys an Army to Mawson and bounces my Southeast Pacific fleet in BAT. I get my second army into the Norwegian Dependency. No new SCs this year, but I have at least made progress in Antarctica. In the north I had positioned myself to help India keep moving against China but Western Canada moves Central Pacific Ocean which forces me to move defensively to Pacific Islands.

2007 - I give up on helping India in the North and decide to do everything I can to prevent the biggest threat on the board, Western Canada, from expanding too quickly. I try to support Brazil to Southeast Pacific in Autumn, but he doesn't seem to think containing Western Canada is as important as I do. I take BAT and Mawson and build two new fleets.

2008 - I position myself to start pushing Western Canada away from South America without giving him anywhere to retreat. Western Canada has been supporting me with Central Pacific Ocean, trying to buy my favor, but I cannot sit by and let him have South America.

2009 - I force the disband of Western Canada's Southeast Pacific in Spring and East Pacific in Autumn. Kenya takes Sanae IV in August. I really hope that Kenya does not decide to engage me for Antarctica.

2010 - I continue to do what I can to help Brazil rebuff Western Canada and start repositioning my fleets as Kenya is now becoming the most dangerous country in the game, and I was not positioned well to defend against him if he decided to head west.

2011 - Kenya convoys his army out of Sanae IV as I take it. I'm glad he decided not to put up a fight for it. I position myself as well as I can to prevent Kenya from expanding to the South or West.

2012 - I continue to surround Kenya as much as I can, and try to support Brazil into the East Atlantic. The Draw is called.

y2kjbk - I'm a little disappointed that I got no mention in your EoG statement whatsoever, especially after pulling your ass out of the fire..

Elodin (174 D)

In summary, I did not make enough progress early enough to have a good shot at a solo, so focused my attention on preventing anyone else from soloing and tried to generate a draw as early as possible.

2004 should read finally made it to 6 SCs.

@Elodin: yes you deserve a spot in my full EOG not written at 3:00am while drunk:

2000: Argentina outguess me in Colombia/Peru and I just get one build, but Argentina builds all fleets? He's expecting me to be friendly because of that? Not gonna happen in gunboat, not this early.

2001: Argentina plunges to Antarctica as expected by his builds while I snag Peru from him. Argentina will fall soon because of his decision to not fight me.

2002: Chile snagged, and Western Canada gets on my radar as the guy I will be interacting with imminently on my northern border.

2003: Western Canada gets a little nasty but I repel him while I trade Chile for Uruguay with Brazil. Still in a decent spot.

2004: Chile gotten back, Western Canada still unable to breach my northern border. In a better spot now.

2005: Argentina is snuffed out as I take the continent, and I move into position to challenge Western Canada. I don't plan on being peaceful with him at all.

2006: Mexico is mine. The War of the Americas is on. I'm conscious of Oz taking over Antarctica and coming close to my border, we'll see what his intentions are.

2007: Western Canada goes fully against me and looks like he's ready to invade. This game just got more interesting. I'm in a solid positon to hang onto Mexico for a bit longer, which will help me get South America secured while I stall Western Canada. The goal here is to get fleets into the Pacific, a challenging task for Brazil to begin with. Oz definitely seems friendly towards me, so I start to account for that.

2008: I'm able to wrap my fleets around and start forming a fortress around South America. Yet that fortress is surrounded almost entirely by Yellow fleets. I need to prepare for impact.

2009: Oz saves the day. While Western Canada expectedly snags Buenos Aires from me, I'm able to thwart his attack in the north because of Oz's interference. Elodin, you do deserve my gratitude for staying alive with a continent in this game, and you have it.

2010: I destroy Mexico in order to make peace with Western Canada, and he takes it while I reform the fortress and take back Buenos Aires. At this point, my ambitions for greater domination beyond a single continent are low.

2011: Oz seems to be extremely encouraging with his support orders to get me fighting again. It's definitely tempting. But since I'm Brazil and not Argentina, I decide I really need to keep enough guys down South to prevent Oz from deciding I would be too easy for him to jump on if I do try to expand north again into North America, so I stay passive.

2012: I stay passive with my draw vote, and the game ends after this year.

Again, thanks for the help Elodin :)

Kenya had a shot of winning that game, even at the end, if he took the Med Sea he would have eventually been able to wipe out Russia while sliding fleets along Egypt into Morocco and Mau to make Africa's basically unbreakable fleet defense. Holding off Oz would have been manageable with the new builds coming from Russia and he probably would have been able to push through Asia once more armies were convoyed over. Given, it would have taken about 10+ more years in the game but that is the fun part about Africa, once you have all of the continent you are basically safe from any attack, and if you have the Med you have an almost unblockable pathway into Europe, and from there Asia.

Argentinian EOG: How NOT to make friends

This game was a short and brutal lesson for me on how not to make friends in a gunboat game. In previous world games I've played, I've found that Argentina and Brazil can have a very productive relationship if they start early and attack in opposite directions. Given my desire to get off to a good start, I decide before the game begins that I'll split the continent with Brazil from the first turn, and come back to him in the mid-game if the opportunity presents itself.

2000:

My Spring moves are pretty standard -- I get the bounce in WAO that I was hoping for, grab Peru, and position myself for Uruguay. South Africa is likely headed to BAT, though I mentally tag him as my first target: Antarctica is usually a good spot to hit early, as neither of the locals are going to have armies before the second year. It's a place that rewards you for building mostly fleets, a good strategy anyway, and it's a nice strategic location from which to launch future attacks. Yeah, Antarctica seems like the best place to head early. Mind made up, I support Brazil into WAO and Colombia in the fall, clearly and unequivocally signalling my desire for friendly relationships. Unfortunately, he tries to get cute, and misses the build in Colombia. No matter, though, as I'm sure he'll pick it up next year and I don't intend to challenge him for it. I build multiple fleets and signal my intentions to rush southward.

2001:

Or not. My fleets surge southward, but I immediately notice that perhaps Brazil isn't as convinced as he could be: He moves one fleet to Sao Paolo, positioning himself for an attack on my Uruguay, and his army movements position him for an attack on Peru as well. Moreover, he tries to support South Africa into Southwest Atlantic, a move which (amusingly) fails only because South Africa tries to do the same for him. Well this looks bad -- hopefully he's just being defensive? I figure another turn of blatant non-aggression will get him off my back. I'm very disheartened, though, to see all of North America focused inward, since my best bet would probably be someone else attacking Brazil. Fall moves have me claiming BAT from South Africa (since I figured he'd make a run for the guaranteed South Pole) and losing Peru. I signal frantically for peace with multiple support-holds, but Brazil's builds make it abundantly clear that he's not interested.

2002:

At this point my units are horribly out of position to try and attack Brazil, so my only hope as i see it is to get enough builds in Antarctica to offset the losses in Argentina. I grab Sanae in the Spring, and.... wait... is that a support-hold on Uruguay from Brazil? I feel that it would have been more convincing had his army not moved into prime "Fuck-Up-Argentina" position. Fall proves me right, as I lose Chile but gain Sanae, again offsetting my losses. Still no help in sight from North America, and clearly Brazil thinks me dead already as he starts scavenging off the scraps of Quebec that Western Canada hasn't reached yet.

2003:

With likely no help coming from North America, and not much room left for expansion in Antarctica (without getting too drawn out), I hurl myself northward against Brazil, grabbing Chile and inevitably loosing Uruguay. But a savior seems to have arrived! Western Canada begins the first attacks of a glorious offensive that will scour Brazil from the world and deliver unto me my salvation.

2004:

Or not. WC tries to support me into Peru just as I try to support him in (in retrospect, a stupid idea since my support was essentially guaranteed to be broken). Moreover, I begin to lose my Antarctican SCs to a rightfully vengeful South Africa, and collapse in all directions. By next year, I'm completely dead, a victim of my own eagerness for friendship and what I see as either complete blindness or willful bloodthirstiness on the part of Brazil.

y2kjbk: "Argentina outguess me in Colombia/Peru and I just get one build, but Argentina builds all fleets? He's expecting me to be friendly because of that? Not gonna happen in gunboat, not this early." I'm really curious about this -- when you've got a country throwing its alliegance at your feet this early in the game, what was your thought process for deciding to roll me up? Clearly it worked well, but I'm curious why you'd throw away an ally so easily.

y2kjbk (4846 D(G))
16 Mar 13 UTC
In press, it is easier for Argentina and Brazil to band if both are solid, reliable players, and coordinate a joint attack outwards that can benefit both players in a balanced fashion. In gunboat, Brazil just has to go north and Argentina goes south, and Argentina usually wins out by taking Antarctica while Brazil eventually hits heavy resistance early on in the march to North America. There is one game in particular in this tournament that hasn't ended that simulates this well. Therefore, as Brazil I always go all out on Argentina, and as Argentina I go all out against Brazil to get South America secured, since I have to expect Brazil to do as I would do.

It's kinda like a prisoner's dilemma in my mind on that continent at the start. Gotta go for the throat as the best option.

I would really like to hear from EvW, BosephJennet, and Partysane still (and the latter half of LakersFan's EoG statement.

jmo- I agree with you that Kenya still had a shot at soloing. I am happy he accepted the draw when he did, I had no way of getting onto Africa myself, but with Brazil and maybe Russia we could have forced our way into the East Atlantic Ocean, and hopefully convoyed an army or two onto the continent to open doors in other areas.

Ok, since Elodin requested it, here is the conclusion to my very meh EoG.

2008: India moves into Mongolia. Fortunately though, Oz pulls out of WPO in Spring, allowing me to look to flank India in the south. Russia supports me into E. Siberia. I guess he wants peace?

2009: Ouch, I lose Inner Mongolia in Spring. Not looking promising. Shanghai likely to fall in Fall... Which happens. Compounding that is India's move to Irkutsk. Sheesh!

2010: Well, some very lucky guessing in Spring lets me keep Beijing. That doesn't stop India from correcting his tactics to take Vladivostok in Fall. At least Russia moved his northern fleet.

2011: India NMR's in Spring. WOOHOO! Then India NMR's a second time. SWEET! This lets me retake Vladivostok and Shanghai. There may be a ray of hope yet.

2012: The downside to taking Vladivostok is that India is able to take E. Siberia from me. Fortunately, India NMR's yet again. Guangzhou is thus liberated! And not a moment too soon, as the game is finally drawn.

An actual philosophy variant
Choose a philosophical school of thought. If the philosopher fundamentally changed during his writing career, you must also choose which text(s) you will be following. Then, you must hold to that philosophy in all discussions and movements. Why not PP, 5 D, 50hr phases, WTA, orders must be announced. If someone can demonstrate how a proposed action goes against your philosophy, you may not take that action and must do something else. Critiques?

The April Fools banner ads are still partially there...
They image tag is still there and clickable, but the images themselves are displaying as broken. I think something got left turned on accidentally.

Unintended side effect: Resetting +1 on threads/posts
I just noticed that all +1s for threads/posts have been reset. Thankfully, our personal likes/liked remained, and hopefully, the +1 still works.

Server upgrade
Thanks for everyone's patience during the server upgrade, for some reason it took them three hours, so it took much longer than I expected. I've added time to all games, if anyone spots anything out of place let me know.
On the bright side once this has settled down the server should have more capacity..

How does one leave a game?
I have no intentions of leaving any games I'm in, but I invited a friend to join the site and he joined a bunch of games, then decided he just didn't understand the game. Rather than stick around and ruin things for everyone, I've convinced him to just leave but I don't see that option anywhere. Help?

Why does anyone play live gunboat games?
Don't get me wrong, they're fun enjoyable things to do, even though I'm not too good in them myself, but, NMRs and CDs are rampant, and you get opportunistic wankers that refuse to draw/cancel even though everyone else has their draw/cancel votes up and game ettiqute demands that they do so, so I ask, why does anyone play them?

Repeat Messages?
Did the new updates come with a feature for preventing posting the same messages you already did? I posted the link to the email the mods about unpausing games, but I ended up having to add something to the beginning of the post, to get around a message that told me to make repeat messages.
Doesn't matter that much, but it seems like it could be annoying at times

Can someone explain the draw of the Gunboat?
To me, the entire thrill of this game is in the formation of alliances and the negotiations between players. With that being said, I absolutely don't understand the draw of the Gunboat games--it takes out the best part. If I'm looking for pure strategy, I'll take games like Axis and Allies (despite the "luck factor" or even chess). What am I missing about Gunboat games?
