Well, I dunno...the more and more time I spend with fellow English/Humanities majors, the more I see the point of his dislike and utter disdain for them...
JUST because you have an opinion doesn't mean it's right, valid, or just as valid as another opinion, damn it!
That's what I love about science--even if there are competing theories and you argue between them, it isn't just opinion-based, you need EVIDENCE...and more "evidence" than just "But it's how I feeeeeel!" UGH! ;)
(It's times like these I wish English/Literature was approached a bit more like a science...I think T.S. Eliot hit the nail on the head in his essay "Tradition and the Individual Talent" when he likened the relationship of author to art to that of catalyst and chemical reaction...one is necessary for the other, but the artist is ultimately just a component in "the larger literary equation," as it were...Eliot and Shakespeare and Kafka don't just spill their guts out onto the page because they feeeeel so much, they take in all the literature and history and world around them past and present and THAT shapes what they think and what they choose to use as a catalyst for their work.)
So, I defend you, Sheldon Cooper...at least on this count...
Humanities majors ARE irritating! (Don't believe me? ...After reading this major's post, I bet you do!) :)
