Who can name all of their great-grandparents?
I heard recently that our grandparents parents are almost unknown to most of us, I can't name all my great-grandparents. Can anyone? PS you don't need to list them here, just let me know if you can name them.

Worst game I've ever played
gameID=103663

I took over a cd country and none of the others players will speak to me, not one word despite me making several attempts. I've played with one of the players before and he's generally a dick. Then mod comes in pauses the game and then cancels it, because of u fair play, but no one gets banned, and mod won't discuss it further.

Why don't more people play at vdiplomacy.com?
Just wondering. That website has a lot less games going on (especially live games) but has a much better variety of variants, better interface, easier contact with the mods (maybe not always better, but easier to access) and has statistics on all variants, performances, has NMR policy and reliability ratings...

Basically, why do we play here and not there? I mean I play both, but why is this one the clear favorite?

Diplomacy on a randomly-generated map
Has anyone ever thought about this? I think it could add an interesting new element if the map were generated fresh each time, giving an edge to players who could quickly grasp "the lay of the land," as it were. Of course, coming up with an algorithm that would consistently generate balanced and fun maps could prove tricky, but I see no reason why it shouldn't be possible.

Pacific Theatre Variant
Hi all,
SYnapse (0 DX)
04 Mar 13 UTC
in order to complement my 5-player WWII variant being released soon (http://lab.vdiplomacy.com/variants.php?variantID=87), I've decided to work on a 5-player Pacific variant in the hope that players will be able to play the entire scope of the Second World War.

My first draft of the map is this: http://s22.postimage.org/rm699k7cx/smallmap.jpg

Please could you geography and politics buffs let me know if anything in inaccurate and offer me advice for my map?

Thanks.

From a gameplay perspective, this map is going to be extremely unbalanced - a surprise stab of USA or Australia will be nearly impossible, and Japan is likely going to be crushed early on in every game. As well, fighting over all those empty ocean spaces just doesn't look like a lot of fun.

And what's that big island off Sumatra's west coast?

If this is truly a WWII variant, why doesn't Japan start off stronger? Why is China even a country? Japan should really have territory including Manchuria and SE Asia all the way into Papua New Guinea. Australia is clearly far too strong to be historically accurate, considering its position on the board relative to its power during WWII. Also, it looks like you made up a bunch of islands in Indonesia instead of looking at a map.

Um.... Japan does have Manchuria, and China is a country because it was a country. As for the other territories, this is clearly not a 1942 start (more like 1936).

Unless you do it as a Fog of War and therefore open to some suprise buttsecks of the US from the high seas, it will make for a boring game.

You could make China a neutral with standing armies. But I'd definitely limit opportunities for Australia. Maybe let them only be able to gain one SC in the starting year. I'd also give the US and the Japanese equal SC's. This map should showcase the US and Japan, so I think that they should have about twice as many SC's as Russia and Australia (maybe 5, 5, 3, and 3). If you have your heart set on a five-player map, I might expand the map to include British India with as few SC's as Russia and Australia. This would stress the importance of grabbing China, and make Russia seem more like an inland power (which they were). Just some thoughts...

Oh, I guess it is yellow. My bad.

I'd forget the traditional units of fleets and armies. With a map like this, armies are going to be almost worthless unless you want to fight the country right next to you. Instead, employ "Marine" units that can hold and support both land and water areas. It might speed up gameplay but would take all of the strategy out of the builds phase.

If you can figure out a way to make it more balanced I would definitely be interested

Consider making Okinawa a Japanese supply center in lieu of Iwo Jima. Iwo Jima was a barren fortress that happened to have a marginally-usable airfield. Okinawa was actually a productive pre-war province and economic asset.

Also, forget the idea of having the Philippines an American SC. Waaay too vulnerable. Make San Diego or Los Angeles the fifth American SC. Midway might be a little too close to Pearl, but it would balance the map better than Wake or Guam.
JECE (1248 D)

Hmm. well, if you give the U. S. a vulnerable SC it could make the game more balanced.
Gunfighter06 (224 D)
06 Mar 13 UTC
Not necessarily. All other countries benefit from nearby home SCs.

I would ask for advice over on vdip where they make a lot of variants to make sure, but I think they are going to tell you this map is very unbalanced and you will find one country will win a majority of the time.

Either way it needs to be tested by a variety of different players and skill levels in order to find the holes in the balance of the map.

Why can't you use correct spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and grammar? You consistently butcher one, two, three, or all four of these categories, and it makes your posts unreadable. They become sound and fury signifying nothing. Please, for the good of the forum, follow standard orthography.

No in-game messaging games with messages
Currently if you're in a "No in-game messaging" game, there's no way to get rid of a global message. This means that the games always show up with the unread message icon at the top of the page, which is really annoying. As far as I can tell, there's no way to mark these messages as read. This state occurs when a player in the game is banned, which adds a global message that cannot be read. Please fix!

Hey guys, I'm back!

Also, is the "unpause" button generally broken? I paused two games so I could go have surgery, and neither of them will register a hit on the "unpause" button?

Classic Diplomacy - not year 1901
What year is the Classic Diplomacy set? Definitely not year 1901AD, by then Tunis was already colonized by France. Luxemburg was an independent nation, Albania didn't border Austria and the United Kingdom didn't own Iceland. The was also no bridge between Sweden and Denmark. Everyone else can claim some independence on that map.
