How does one report a dubious competitor?
I'm in a game where one player is making moves that help another player, after that player attacked him from the first move. It may not be outright cheating, but it is certainly against the spirit of the rules. I would like an administrator to look into it.

To Cathlics - Resigning as Voice of God?
OK...I thought it was, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me..." and the Pope, who --- isn't he like the Voice of God on earth?? -- is too tired to go on? Errr...it isn't about his strength...it's supposed to be about Christ's strength, isn't it? How disappointing is this to Catholics?

What new features would you like to see on WebDip?
Think of this as a wishlist. Please be constructive and positive. I think it would be really good if we can come up with a solid list of 6-10 things that we can slowly work on to improve the site.

Hi guys, not sure what happened exactly but the database server was taking up too much processing power, and there were quite a few queries waiting around to be executed. I restarted the server, and the server load has come back down to normal. If this repeats itself I'll figure out why it's happening and take steps to prevent it

Yep, snow here, too <GRIN>. System has seemed slow, but not just webdip. Snowed in pretty good in Long Island. I'm going back to sleep -- cable works so let the kids knock themselves out. I'm trying to figure out what's going on guys, but unfortunately the issue goes away when I turn it to maintenance mode. Whatever the problem is it doesn't happen unless there's normal server load, so things might get slow again before I figure out what's going on.

I've optimized a couple of tables and enabled query caching, and the issue seems to be related mainly to the forum queries, but I expect it'll take some more figuring out.

Wish I could give one, but I'm not really sure.. The load was very high (low 20s, compared with ~0.2 usually), the database server was taking up a lot of CPU, and there were lots of sleeping MySQL sessions.

The queries which were timing out were the forum queries, although nothing has changed for them recently.

I put the server into maintenance mode, keeping the MySQL DB from running anything complex, and it recovered very quickly. I then checked the vitals and it turned out the query cache was disabled, I thought it'd be a good idea to enable it since forum queries are the same for all users. Analyzed the forum queries too, comparing it to the dev server; the SQL EXPLAIN analyzer didn't point to any obvious difference between the query running here and the dev server.
Also turned on increased logging for the likely event that the problem came back the moment I opened the server back up. (Also checked the server logs for telltale signs of a DoS attack, but nothing obvious showed up)

Opened it all back up and no issues since. Not very encouraging really, but as I said before I don't have the ability to troubleshoot if the problem isn't repeatable.

Any MySQL gurus are welcome to give their 2c.

Also FYI there hasn't been a noticeable increase in the number of users recently. I can't think of any change that would bring this sort of thing on (which is why I had an inkling it might be a DoS attack).
It may be one of those annoying things where we'll just have to wait and see, since I don't think enabling the query cache for the forum queries is the reason it hasn't reoccurred.

Thanks for the update Kestas. That's the most frustrating sort of bug, one that leaves no trail and then disappears for no reason waiting to strike again another day. Thanks.

(More of a glitch than a bug in this case.)

I am looking for decent players interested in joining my first game on this site (though I have played Diplomacy before). I hope you will find the settings satisfactory, and the gameplay of high quality. Let us see if I can honor my namesake's legacy.

Wrestling Dropped from Olympic Games.
http://espn.go.com/olympics/wrestling/story/_/id/8939185/ioc-drops-wrestling-2020-olympics

I don't understand how canoeing, handball, badminton, taekwondo, and table tennis can survive as "core sports", but wrestling, that most traditional of Olympic sports, gets placed on par with wakeboarding, roller sports, and squash.

Our game gameID=109269 is having difficulties unpausing. Mod abgemacht offered to help but it took a little while to rally the players to post properly in the chat area.
We've now all posted '/unpause' and would appreciate some quick help. Thanks!
