An All-Male Discussion on Feminism, "Feminism," and Atheism...This Should Be Fun...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKKQdJR7F_I Frankly, I think that's a fair point--these people do NOT represent a very good side of either feminism or atheism, in my opinion...there's Feminism, and then there's "Feminism" or, as it might otherwise be put, "Demanding that everyone agree with your views full stop or else libeling them." Real feminism and real atheism is, I think, being somewhat "poisoned" by this increasingly-smug, self-assured band of PC Police.

CD or hold everything?
I'm in a gunboat at the moment where one of the players - who has no shot at winning anymore - has decided to hold every turn giving SCs to the largest player, in effect throwing the game. I'd prefer if he would just CD so we can get somebody else. Are there any (un)written good practices?

Am I the only one on this forum who thinks tomatoes are an overrated vegetable?
It's basically a red sack of water right? I'm trying to sort of evaluate (with shear power of the mind) to determine if it really should be in the "two ounces of vegetables and two fruits" zone or in the "drink 2 liters of water a day" zone.

Tomatoes are a vegetable, but only in the United States.

In Nix v. Hedden (1893), the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that although they are botanically fruit, tomatoes should be legally treated as vegetables, subjecting them to lower tariff rates.

Thus was established legal precedent that the U.S. government could overrule scientific fact when scientific fact becomes inconvenient.

That makes that U.S. Supreme Court one the worst Supreme Courts in the 19th century.
hecks (164 D)

One could argue that there's a constitutional basis for the Court's jurisdiction over scientific fact, objective reality, and the fabric of the space-time continuum.

Should have had a V8 Fusion...one serving of fruit and one serving of vegetables.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

If they wanted tomatoes to have the same tariff as vegetables, then congress should have updated the laws accordingly. The supreme court shouldn't have declared that the universe was wrong.

By the way, an update to my anti-vegetarian stance. While killing innocent plants is wrong and evil compared to killing life destroying animals such as cows, pigs, and chickens; eating fruit is equivalent to eggs and milk. All you fruitarians are all right by me.
y2kjbk (4846 D(G))

Right and wrong is all relative anyway. Call it a vegetable or a fruit, a tomato is still a damn tomato.

...or is it?

"I am...to determine if it really should be in the "two ounces of vegetables and two fruits" zone or in the "drink 2 liters of water a day" zone."

Who says it can't fulfill both? These are not mutually exclusive requirements any more than Vitamin D and Calcium requirements are mutually exclusive. Both are found in milk and cheese and the tomato can apply towards the half gallon of water and the fruits and veggies requirement and they happen to have some good stuff for you in them like lycopene.

Personally, I despise any uncooked or chunky version of them. Tomato based sauces are great but fresh tomatoes suck.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
17 Jan 13 UTC
I like fresh tomatoes sliced on a sandwhich/burger. When my wife and I make spaghetti, we put in a couple of cans of whole peeled tomatoes, except for the one or two I eat right out of the can. Squishy goodness.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
17 Jan 13 UTC
I meant to add after the first sentence that otherwise I don't care for fresh tomatoes. But cooked tomatoes are great.

"That makes that U.S. Supreme Court one the worst Supreme Courts in the 19th century."

Not at all. The Supreme Court is charged with figuring out how Congress used words. At the time of this decision, "vegetable" included tomato in every context but the technical, so they were likely right in assuming that Congress intended tomatoes to be treated under that classification. It's a (very common) fallacy of scientists to assume that they have the right to interpret every usage of a word according to the scientific meaning, irrespective of how the writer intended it. But it is the job of courts to figure out how Congress actually used the word.

semck, I know, that was a joke. I was making fun of Sbyvl in his Presidents thread a little. It's not an easy joke to explain, but if you read what Sbyvl has to say about some of the presidents (and 2WL's comments on Sbyvl) and then re-read my SC comment you'll find it wasn't meant as a serious comment at all :-)

All of you folks complaining about fresh tomatoes: I simply cannot believe you've ever actually eaten a good one. Not some mass produced spray-painted chemically thing from the Foodmax, but a fresh, vine-ripened heirloom tomato, the kind you can't buy at the store because they're made for eating and not cross-country transportation.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

abgemacht (1076 D(G))

I've found underground vegetables like potatoes and carrots to be much worse than the store, actually. Most fruits and vegetables are much better though. I wouldn't recommend growing watermelon. It's fun at first but they're high maintenance and there are so many fucking seeds it's barely worth eating.
krellin (80 DX)

"It's pretty disgusting for a fruit, maybe that's why I thought it was an okay tasting vegetable."

Disagree - first off, store-bought tomatoes are worthless, tasteless. Second, there are many varieties of tomatoes, so making a broad judgement on tomatoes is not valid - it's like saying I hate driving cars when all you have experienced is a 32 year old rusted out Chevy Chevette and you are trying to drive up hill.

You need to grow your own tomatoes - a nice meaty variety (as you complained about the liquid content) and then, during the heat of a summer day, pick it and et it while it's still warm from the sun - naturally sweet and salty all at once...it really can't be beat.
Draugnar (0 DX)
18 Jan 13 UTC
I was raised in farming country and we grew tomatoes. I simply hate every variety I've ever tried. Grape, Cherry, Roma, Beefsteak, doesn't matter. The closest I've come to liking, is I can tolerate the yellow cherry sized ones, and I actually like Tomatillas for chunky salsa.
