Face to face
Played my first face to face last weekend. Bought an 18 pack of PBR and played with 6 total on the board. 3 of us had played before and 3 never. Ended up the 3 that had played drew E/F/G. We made it to 1905 before we ran out of time, but one of the noobs was hooked immediately and ordered the game online next day. He's trying to set up another face to face this weekend.

Ghost Rating Viewer
Spending some time on a side project making a GR viewer

So, I've been mucking around in Excel for a bit creating a workbook to
view your GR and whatnot over the years. I figured it was a good way
to learn some VBA during my downtime and might be something that
people are interested in. It currently only goes back one year and
only includes the general ghost ratings because grabbing the data from
the web was going really slowly on my computer. Alderian said he'll
give me a dump of CSV files at some point so I'll incorporate them
then.

The macros are expectedly obtuse considering I have almost nil
programming experience but I've cut them down enough so it's working
even on this shitbox of a machine. I'm also not sure how it translates
into other versions of Excel from 2010. It doesn't appear possible to
an Excel file to the internet while maintaining the micros so you'll
all just have to download it. I've given a dropbox link to d/l it
below. I'm not sure if this is the best way to share the file so let
me know if you have other suggestions.

So, I'm really just posting the working file here wondering if anyone
has suggestions or requests for me to add in to the thing. Doesn't
matter how mundane it is, if it tickles my fancy to try figure it out
in VBA, I'll give it a shot.

Looking forward to a GR Viewer! http://www.neighborhoodvalues.com/nv/else/pixs/PixSm/NV_els33.jpg
Are macros really the best way to run that? You have to go in a record each one for each player, right?

Then again, I'm not really sure how else I'd do it. I mean, I could get all the data from each spreadsheet for the player with a a preprogramed HLookup, but that would take a long time to test and I'm not sure how I'd get the results in graphical form.

Nah. You don't have to record macros. You can type them up yourself. I'll sometimes record one just to see what expressions and syntax Excel suggests but otherwise I'm just typing them up.

I actually do have the VLoopkup commands all programmed in already to one of the spreadsheets. The macro really just copies and pastes it. I was considering adding them into the code though just for completeness.
Alright, I had though you were going through and recording a macro for each player lol. It seems pretty well designed though

Haha. God no. That'd be hell. And thanks.
This is an awesome idea. I did run in to a few kinks.

The drop down menu also won't populate the list of names to plot for me. The macro for it seems to be missing - Excel thinks it was called "DropDown3_Change" but I can't find that macro in the list of macros.

The interface is pretty sweet though.

Hmm. It seems to have disappeared on my computer too. I stopped using it when I realized how much more difficult it was to find the name in the drop down than to just type it.
I'll try figure out where it went though.

Ah the macro is there. It's just not assigned to it. To make it work, right click on it and hit assign macro. It's called nameselect
So in the end will this be added to the ghostratings site, or what?

I dunno, haven't spoken to TGM or Alderian about that. If this Dropbox link works, I can keep posting it every time he posts the GR or, if it works for everyone, he can add it to the site.

I've got some ideas for when I get the rest of the data. Alderian has been indisposed but, pending gettig the data, I should have it running by February. My only worry is that, once I add the rest of the data, the file will be too large and sluggish. Excel can be the worst.

Should Knowledge Be Free?
We've had this debate ad nauseum regarding music, movies, games, etc. In light of the Aaron Swartz debacle, I think it's worth talking about Piracy in the context of Science.

Sitter
I need a sitter from the 19th through the 27th... it may go a day or so beyond that as well. I hope to have most of my games paused but I'll still have between 5-8 to play. None are shorter than 24 hour phases. If anyone is available and could do this, I'll pay you in hugs and maybe a box of chocolates if you're dumb enough to give an ass like me your mailing address.

Thanks :D

Why all the Lori Grimes hate?
I'm only through the second episode of season three of Walking Dead, but why all the Lori Grimes hate? We've all done dumb things, like drive off in a car without telling anyone and crashing into a walker, and who hasn't lost a child (a few hundred times), so beyond the obvious complaints (crashing car, losing son), why all the Lori Grimes hate?

On GM crops
"France, remember, long refused to accept the potato because it was an American import. As one commentator put it recently, Europe is on the verge of becoming a food museum. We well-fed consumers are blinded by romantic nostalgia for the traditional farming of the past. Because we have enough to eat, we can afford to indulge our aesthetic illusions."

For those of you who believe in God, or, hell, those of you who don't if you're willing, please pray for my mom. If you remember my post from a week ago, she had a brain aneurysm, and now the pressure in her brain is increasing and she is probably going to die. So please pray.
