Face to face
Played my first face to face last weekend. Bought an 18 pack of PBR and played with 6 total on the board. 3 of us had played before and 3 never. Ended up the 3 that had played drew E/F/G. We made it to 1905 before we ran out of time, but one of the noobs was hooked immediately and ordered the game online next day. He's trying to set up another face to face this weekend.

Sitter
I need a sitter from the 19th through the 27th... it may go a day or so beyond that as well. I hope to have most of my games paused but I'll still have between 5-8 to play. None are shorter than 24 hour phases. If anyone is available and could do this, I'll pay you in hugs and maybe a box of chocolates if you're dumb enough to give an ass like me your mailing address.

Thanks :D

Well it would be interesting to find out what would have happened if he hadn't been such a psychotic racist, but more of a classic German expansionist. Instead of just attacking all over the place annexing Austria, taking Alsace-Lorraine and immediately invading the Soviet Union. Possibly we'd all be speaking German now. And worshipping him for having defeated communism.

Alas, he was a psychotic racist and I'm going for Evil Overlord.

Ooh there's a painful comma missing what I meant to say was, INSTEAD of attacking all over the place, COMMA,
annexing Austria, taking AL and immediately invading the SU (and leave it at these three countries, diplomatically pressuring Japan to focus on Russia only) and Italy taking only the area around Lyon.

That would've made an interesting war.

According to legend, shortly after world war 1, a group of aliens decided to invade earth. Their plan was to mind control half the population and have them kill the other half. However for whatever reason this mind control would only effect people with a box of facial hair directly below the nose.

Charlie Chaplin was in fact an evil alien overlord. His show was made by the aliens to increase the popularity of this moustache. Hitler found out this in October of 1923, and with a group of friends he tried to convince the Munich police of this supposed invasion plan. The police arrested him and his group on November 9th of the same year. This day would be remembered as the 'Beer Hall Putsch'.

In prison Hitler came up with multiple plans to thwart the invasion, most of them failed. His most famous attempt was when he wrote Mein Kampf, to warn the world about it. Sadly the editors decided the book would be a better sell if they remove the aliens from the plot.

After the popularity of the book, there was a demand by the Nazis for Hitler to go into politics. It was here that Hitler attempted his final plan, knowing now that nobody would believe him, he came up with one last plan to save the world without people knowing it. He was to be so hated, and his moustache so remembered, that never again would somebody wear a Charlie Chaplin moustache, and the alien invasion was thwarted.

Today, by most, he is still remembered as the most hated men ever, but to the few who know the truth, we remember him as the man who sacrificed himself, his memory and his pride to save the world.

I don't think there is anything remotely cool about Hitler. Couldn't you give us a better discussion question, Yellow Jacket?
If only he stayed a politician and didn't try to play general, we'd be speaking German right now.

Deranged psychopathic political genius

Hitler was no idiot and was not insane, at least not till maybe the end with the whole syphilis thing. He was a mediocre politician in everything but public speaking. He was a barely mediocre military leader and untalented diplomat but incredible luck masked this for years. He was basically a regular guy with some horrible ideas, and that makes him all the more scary.

1st of all, Hitler wasn't a German but an Austrian. 2nd, he was successful in establishing a dictatorship very much in line with almost all other dictators. 3rd he was no genius (as most have pointed out) beyond that (which compared to most of us is already somehow genius - meaning achieving this goal isn't for everybody, but doesn't refer to his policies). 4th his dictatorship crumbled on several points and failed ultimately because he had always to juggle several pressure groups, esp. Wehrmacht, SS and SA as well as other NSDAP interests (pretty much as any dictator e.g. of Egypt had to do). Most of his war decisions could be interpreted this way. His project was more than pathetic and wouldn't have succeeded beyond his death (and I don't mean anti-communism or anti-semitism, but rather his vision of organic nation state(s) and organic pan-europeanism), even without defeat. Remember the 7/20 attack by his own (highly anti-semitic and anti-communist) Wehrmacht officers. As a politician doing politics he was quite good, as a politician devising policies he was medocre and as a politician creating polity he completely sucked (as most dictators do). So most of his impressing successes (conquering Western Europe and half Russia) were more successes of Germany than of Hitler's and the weakness or unawareness of the Western European powers. That he couldn't conquer England and couldn't convince Japan (he tried) to focus on the Soviet Union says everything about his "genius" in international affairs. All the more the highly counterproductive antisemitism and costly decision to holocaust Jewish populations. In sum, evil and ordinary - neither overlord nor genius, but probably misunderstood.

Why didn't God exact his revenge on the Germans after the holocaust, if he didn't send Jesus back then why would he send him back now while the Jews are kicking Muslim ass.
I'm not a conspiracy theorist but Hitler & God, a bit too cosy for my liking, what are we not being told?. Also the Swastika is a religious symbol in South East Asia. Coincidence, I think not.
After the War who gave German generals safe passage out of Germany .... the Vatican, the Pope is am Emissary of God.

Hitler was a genius. I don't think there is anyone can dispute that. Was he psychotic? Most definitely.

He was a political genius, very charismatic, great public speaker and kept to himself.

After a flawless first 2 years of the war (in which Hitler had virtually all of Europe under his control), Hitler started getting arrogant and then paranoid. He increasingly tried to do everything by himself and refused to listen to his generals, who had more experience about tactics.

He was able to turn around the Germany economy, unify a culture and lead the fastest war of expansion in Europe of all time.

I don't think any of us could have done that.

He was batshit insane, but that doesn't mean he wasn't a genuis, he was an evil overlord (borrowing the title of the thread) but that doesn't mean he wasn't a genius. He was many things, but he was indisputably a genius.

Depends on what you actually mean by calling him a genius.
As an orator and deceptor he actually was a genius. He was a shrewd politician as well.
However, he was not a great mind by any means. He was NOT
- a great economist. The whole German effort was based on debt and outright extortion.
- a great military leader. Thanks to his effort great battle plans were spoiled which led to desasters as Dunkirk, Stalingrad, etc.
- a great thinker. If you take a look into his manifesto "Mein Kampf", you will agree at once that this is demented gibberish. If you don't believe me, just read it!

"He was able to turn around the Germany economy"

With primitive short-term policies that were still less effective that those in the SU.

"unify a culture"

By silencing all dissenting voices within his country, not by persuading them.

"lead the fastest war of expansion in Europe of all time."

And yet this conquest didn't make Germany any stronger. Just like holding onto its African colonies didn't make Estado Novo stronger while Britain was definitely better without them. Just like Trajan's conquests of Mesopotamia and Dacia were but vanity campaigns that led to overextension and not greatness.

"1st of all, Hitler wasn't a German but an Austrian."

Austrians are really just Bavarians who tend to prefer wine and have some Slavic-sounding last names. A non-German national identity didn't really exist in Austria till after WWII, after the Austrians lucked out and were not held responsible for Nazi Germany's crimes even though just as many of them were willing to follow Hitler as in any part of Germany proper. This is a complicated topic that I ask you to trust me on (I lived in Austria for six months), since it's a topic which deserves its own thread and at the same time is so mind-numbingly dull that it would quickly descend into nothing but obi-posts by me. Put simply, Hitler was completely German since "Austrian" wasn't really anything more distinct than Brandenburger or Swabian until the Second World War destroyed the Pan-Germanic ideal once and for all.
