So, I entered the game in the Autumn of year 4 after it had been paused and the previous Persia had been kicked out. Thucy asked that someone take over Persia, so me, being a nice guy, took it over.
The previous Persia seemed to have been a bit of a jerk. The previous messages I read I read were rather aggressive. My first order of business was to talk to Rome, Egypt and Greece to form some alliances.
Egypt and Greece were right in my face but Rome was making big moves on Greece and was in a good position to snipe some SC from Egypt, so, I figured I was golden. I would negotiate cease fires and get everyone moving on Rome, I would move a few Fleets out to assist those guys and we would get Rome under control.
Well, I did some talking but no one really wanted to reply. Egypt told me he would retreat and I figured a show of good faith would be to move out of the Sinai. Also, Egypt was surrounding Cyprus so I figured he would take it but, I was optimistic that he would leave it be.
Needless to say Egypt decided to take Cyprus and Sinai. Greece did not retreat but they burned a unit on my side of the board and now Rome and Egypt are both at 9 SC and without some pressure from Egypt is going to roll over Greece and win the game.
I wasn't mad about Cyprus, it was inevitable. I just wanted to prevent the Rome solo. I told Egypt that I was okay with it and that he could hold it but he needed to move on Rome. He entertains the idea but ultimately tells me he is going to fight me. I try to explain that the current set up is going to require two years for him to get an SC and that is only if I don't move an Army South to Nabataea. He tells me that he doesn't want to change his whole plan of attack. I explain that his plan is slow and will get very little progress while Rome steam rolls Egypt.
Spring of 5 comes a long and Greece doesn't make any moves so I move my extra army north, because, heck if Rome is going to take Free SC I will too. I am still trying to explain to Egypt that Rome is going to win without any pressure from him.
Fall of 5: I move to Sinope and bounce with Greece. He is a little upset, I told him that I thought he had left so I moved in to get a SC. Egypt continues his fruitless attack against me. I continue to ask him not to, Rome takes Sparta. This put Rome at 10 SC with a dwindling opponent in Greece. I figure this is the move that wakes Egypt up. At some point he asks if I would help him fight Greece. At this point I am about to sniff glue, because, why oh why would you want help against a dying Greece when Rome is on his way to win. However, I agree with the stipulation that he fights Rome.
Spring of 6: Egypt tells me he doesn't think I can forgive him. I tell him that I don't care that he has been beating his head against the wall trying to break my defenses and if he moves against Rome we can all be happy. He seems to consider it but turns me down telling me we could have been good allies if I started the game rather than take over Persia. I plead with him to explain to me how he plans to fend off Rome when Greece is getting decimated. He assures me he has a plan.
Egypt takes Jerusalem from me. It was okay, I had a plan to get it back, and, Greece fails to enter order again, and Rome takes Vindobona, Miletus and Athens. I am sure that Egypt will realize that, if he moves now, we might be able to force a 3 way tie. The 3 SC Rome took put him at 12 and if Greece fails to put in orders again he will be up to 17, hell if Greece puts in orders Rome will still finish the round with 15.
Fall of 6: Guess what? Egypt still chugs along on his sure fire course to drive me nuts. Greece doesn’t enter order so Rome now has 17 SC. I take Sinope this time, Egypt has 10 SC. Game is essentially over.
Spring of 7: Before the year started I let Egypt know that this was the least fun game of diplomacy I had ever played. It was as if he was trying to let Rome when from the time I entered. Rome just has to move into position. I take Syrian sea because I feel like Egypt is going to try something silly. He did, he supports Rome into Cilician, supposedly so Rome will take an SC from me. Egypt has to burn his fleet.
Fall of 7: Boo yah, I take back Jeruselam. It was pretty sweet. Rome takes Chersonesus for the win. But, the only progress Egypt made the whole time I was in the game was to take Cyprus. Which was inevitable since it was surrounded. He ended with 9 SC. I ended with 7, which is what I entered the game with, and Rome of course won.
Sorry if this was too long winded.
