Neutrino speed
' [R]esearchers at the CERN lab near Geneva claimed they had recorded neutrinos, a type of tiny particle, travelling faster than the barrier of 186,282 miles (299,792 kilometers) per second.
Now it seems Einstein's reputation has been restored after a source close to the experiment told the US journal Science Insider that "A bad connection between a GPS unit and a computer may be to blame." UNQUOTE - Daily Telegraph 2/23/12

is it possible to take all the games played on webdiplomacy (over 30,000) and do a statisitical study of opening moves, country wins, etc. If we can do it for moneyball, certainly we can do it here.

URGENT FROM THE MODERATORS (Or at least one of us)
All of you know that the method to reach us is through e-mail. But some seem to forget that it needs to go both ways.
Go, right now, to your profile settings and make sure that whatever e-mail address you have there is one you regularly log into. I mean it. Don't fall asleep tonight without checking.
"I didn't see your email." will never be a valid excuse. So make sure we're immune to any over-protective spam filters too.

@Geo - I wasn't talking about my emails to the mods. I was talking about back during the holidays when somebody smart mouthed a player who had asked for a response to a situation and hadn't heard back in a week. One of the mods smarted off that "they had no obligation to respond". And, as far as my checking three times or more, I said when I'm busy that I shut off email. I'm a salaried consultant. When I'm at one of my company's clients or working on their billed time, I set up a rule to forward certain emails to my phone (ones form that client) and shut down my email client on my laptop. I'm on their time and onl their emails are important then.

22 Feb 12 UTC
Oh, and anyone can build a list of dates and times by hand just like that without the times meaning anything. They could also easily cut out any that didn't support their argument from a legit list. And what is thursday? What week? When were these? I sure as hell haven't sent anything to the mods in over a week or two at least.

@Geo - Just so you know, that was KY, not OH. The company was Heritage Propane and if anyone ever goes to look for a job there, run. Run away as fast as you can. That company is so full of politics and nepotism and lies... They brought me in as a consultant and treated me well. The moment they hired me, I became a fucking slave and I had to haggle to get the conversion salary they promised me when I came in as a consutant. I should have seen it coming then.

I'm with Draug on this one. I don't give my real email out to anybody I don't know personally, and my junk email I check exactly whenever I feel like it (though my work email I do feel obligated to stay on top of). You may think it's dumb but my real email NEVER gets spam, and that's the way I like it.

That being said, my relationship with webdiplomacy in no way obligates me to check my email regularly, and Geo you sound like a corporate middle management slimeball. seriously:

"Not answering email after repeated warnings of the need falls under plenty of reasons for termination:
- Consistent incompetence and other shortcomings.
- Repeated unexcused absenteeism or tardiness.
- Incompetence or failure to respond to training
- Misbehavior or rudeness toward clients or customers"

What kind of damn middle management big big corporation handbook did you read that out of? No offense but when I hear turns of phrases like that I want to choke somebody.

"they consider hours timely but can't be bothered to respond to ours in days, if at all"

I didn't post full dates to the forums for a reason. You've the same emails, you can confirm these are correct. I just went down the list in our inbox after filtering your name(s) and stopped when I couldn't take it anymore. The point is, your libel is transparent and annoying.

I remind everyone of our need for up to date emails.
You say "fuck that, mods are bad."
I make a personal rant about how I can't stand people who refuse to use email.
You say "fuck that, you're wrong"
I look at our extensive email history with you and realise that everything you're saying on here is a lie.
You go off on some rant about a job you lost.
Okay Draugnar, okay.

Email is the main, often only, avenue of communication between members of our small team, those we hire as freelance outside of the group, and clients. The person, who had previously been working freelance for us, was constantly missing important notices, missing deadline shifts, and even failing to follow payment procedure, all because he refused to make a habit of checking his email as often as he needed to.

When we told him it needed to change, it didn't after a week, so we told him again and he refused, so he was forced to leave the group. Ultimately, bringing him on full time had been a mistake, but not listening to us had been a bigger mistake as after we fired him, no one would touch him for any decent freelance work.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Not sure what the hostility is about; we just want to make sure we can contact you so we don't wrongfully ban anyone by mistake.

Don't want to give us your main gmail account? Fine, I don't care. Just have your fake gmail account forward to your main account. That's what I do. I have several accounts forward to my main so I only have to check one account. What's the big deal.

And, yeah, sometimes our response time is slow. In fact, I've handled cases that were 2 months old. But, that was when there was one mod on the site (Figle) and he was replaced by one mod (me). So, I really don't feel too bad about that. I think we've been very efficient the last few months. Really, I don't think expect someone to respond to us within 4 days is unreasonable.

My view on it is that there's a limited number of moderators potentially receiving e-mail from hundreds of members, most of which require further e-mails. Versus us potentially receiving one e-mail from them. Obviously, the rank and file guy who is only getting e-mails directly referencing him is going to have an easier turn around than the moderators.

I used to moderate a message board site with a couple hundred members, there were 9-25 of us, depending on when in my 1.5 years doing it you counted. We were never going to be faster than the stuff coming in, many of which were phrased as "Why haven't you deleted this post yet?" And the heavy stuff required the site owner to act on it, so it became, "Why haven't you banned this guy yet?" "Because the owner hasn't been on in three days." "NOT GOOD ENOUGH."

I got nothing but sympathy for you dudes.
Draugnar (0 DX)
22 Feb 12 UTC
No, asking for a rresponse within four days isn't unreasonable, and the last several times I've emaild, response has been great. I was more oging off on Geo because: A) he implied we always get a very timely response - abge confirmed that doesn't happen as shit happens (there is a solution to know that they at least received the email, btu I'll let others figure it out) and B) he started talkign about firing people who don't read email often enough..
@Geo - sounds like the guy you let go had more issues than just not checking email. That's a very different situation from "dammit, I want him to respond today, not tomorrow" and it also sounds like you had a policy in place plus followed all the "warnings" the law and your policy required. So that sounds cool and he sounds like he was a tool. Around here, we have a rule of "emails and phone messages within 1 business day and check your phone messages as often as reasonably possible in case a client needs you". It works well, allows us to focus on work without distractions (distractions from coding means lost time trying to remember where you were at as I'm sure you are aware), and lets us enjoy our evenings and weekends at movies or ballgames or the theater or whatever else we want to do without stressing about what we might be missing.
SacredDigits (102 D)

I used to work for a place that had a stated policy that if you were at your desk you were expected to answer your phone, and if you did not, you were expected to check and act on your messages every morning within the first hour of work. We had an entire department that refused to confirm to that, which was especially vexing because a) you could walk over there and they'd either be doing nothing or doing something easily interrupted, b) they sat right by the head of the company, and c) they often took personal calls during the day.

And yet, the woman in the cube next to me got written up and put on an improvement plan for pressing "send to voicemail" once. I still don't know how them managed that kind of charmed life, but it was really vexing.

This is neither here nor there, but hey, nothing on here ever is.
Geofram (130 D(B))
22 Feb 12 UTC
@Draugnar
Yes, it is the nature of the work that demands "I need this looked at now, not an hour from now." There was no written policy and the guy is/was brilliant, I'm sure he's doing well for himself. But he couldn't, or wouldn't, get in line with how we operate. And apologies if I sounded snappy earlier. It's been a weird day.
Geofram (130 D(B))

@SD
Yeah, but there are too many people who come into work, answer emails and messages all day, and leave thinking they've actually accomplished something. I think that's what Draugnar was hinting at.
spyman (424 D(G))

", I check my email roughly twenty times per day (every working half hour)."

I am sure you have good reason for doing this but generally speaking I would say this is a poor time management practice. I find it better to handle emails in a block a couple of times a day. Email can really suck away that time. I guess it depends on your job. Obviously an IT help desk, for example, might need to constantly check; arirline reservations etc.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
22 Feb 12 UTC
Hehe sorry Geo. Of course that's justified.

When I see lists like that one though i just see red. If you said to me, "he wasn't getting shit done so we canned his ass," I respond a lot more favorably than lists of vague and official-sounding bullshit. Not that you should care how I best respond.
Draugnar (0 DX)
22 Feb 12 UTC
@Geo - no problem, my friend. Sorry I got all huffy and on my soapbox/Draugma King throne too.. I do check my gmail account every day or two (it actually comes into my phone being a Droid), especially if I expect something form you all. And a legit player will know if someone thinks they are cheating and be on the look out for that email anyhow.

Is there a game option for a preference list or first come first serve?I did not see it in the new game options. Getting random countries totally sucks. The first 3 times I got the countries I least wanted - the 4th time my country was ganged up on in the first turn. playdiplomacy.com has both options available for its game.

disabling notices for live games?
this must have been asked before, but is there anyway of disabling the move notices in live games? i don't care as much about the "you lost" or "player x won the game" messages, but what if someone sent me a message while the game was in progress? i might never get it, cause my homepage only displays the last i don't know, 20 messages or something, and those all get filled during the live game. or is there a way of seeing a history of older messages?
