You can't hide from Cspan
Cspan is a perfect example of good government in action.
Government sold airwaves to private companies with the admonition that the private companies who purchased the airwaves would broadcast public events to the public. In other words transparency.

So I've heard that there are actually people who honestly believe that the force is real. Does anyone know someone like this? I'm curious, since it seems so insane, yet it's what I've heard....

Is it possible to force a draw if the players disappear?
One of the players in my diplomacy game Paris requested a pause so the other players complied. He never did return to unpause. It has been 162 days since he has been online so he has obviously deserted the site. The other players haven't been on in a long time as well. We began to vote for a draw and I was hoping since the other players are gone that the game could be forced into a draw or at least unpaused. I don't know who to contact or how to go about doing this. I need some help. Thank you

A Technical Question
I was wondering if it is still possible for an army to attack another army that is adjacent to it only through the ocean (meaning it would need a convoy to actually be successful) and cancel the support of the army even without the convoy.

Why has gunboat become so popular?
I used to play on this site a lot and, nearly without exception, all the highest pot, highest quality games were full press. High pot gunboats were rare, and full-time gunboaters were regarded with suspicion (at least by me!). Now though nearly all the high buy-in games are gunboat. Why the change?!

I think that a lot of people who played high point regular games were dissatisfied with the effect having a high pot had on people's play, so there is a lower demand for high pot regular games.
Everyone bitches during high-pot games, so we make it more difficult to hear everyone's bitching.

I think its mainly a group of 15 or 20 guys who have a ton of points and like to play high quality gunboats. Most of the high pot gunboats have a similar cast of characters. Its also very easy to play a bunch of high pot gunboats at the same time while its very difficult to play a bunch of high pot press games at once.
Yeah, Frank's right.

I can play 20 gunboats at once or 3 press games at once. So, I tend to put more points in gunboat games since I can use all my points this way.

Note: of my 6395 D in play about 1800 D of them are press games.

I play high pot gunboats simply for the reasons already mentioned, but mainly because of the time commitments. When I get busy, it can be difficult to make time for more than 1 or 2 serious full-press games. Gunboats are much quicker.
Right now I have about 1000 invested in full-press (split over two games), and an insane amount invested in 9 gunboats. I spend a heckuva lot more time on the 2 full-press.
There's likely some inflationary explanation for all of this as well. The tendency for a small group of regulars to continue to build their points through these high pot gunboats. And as the bank accounts go up so too do the buy-ins.

Hmmm, ok that makes sense. I know from experience high pot press games can get heated. Thanks

Everyone plays gunboats because I started playing them.
Besides gunboat is the real thing! :P

Lando, if the same people play these high pot gunboats, how does inflation occur, don't you all just trade the same points around? Or do you occassional get some gunboat n00b to jump in and contribute to the veteran's gunboat collective pot?

dave bishop, I've been in a few high pot games, and high GR games, I don't remember any of them ever getting heated, everyone was as polite as could be and no bitching ever took place, not one time. ;-)
Since they all take such little time, we can play in more games than just the high pot ones.

MM hit the nail on the head... I don't know what 'heated exchanges' you all are talking about.

As for inflation - I'm contributing quite a bit to those inflated points... I keep losing 1000 pt gunboat games =P
zultar (4180 DMod(P))

I think, Babak, you greatly exaggerate how many 1000 point gunboat games you lose, unless your definition of losing is not soloing.
There really haven't been a ton for 1000 D buy-ins. At least not in my time. And one I recall was won by you yourself Babak.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))

I just did a search. 3 games of 7000 with Babak. One solo, one four way draw, and one loss. I don't think you'll get sympathy from this crowd.

So I attended my first face-to-face Diplomacy tournament in Seattle, WA, and I am proud to announce that I got my butt kicked. But that didn't matter really because I had a blast. Was great to meet some of you over there! I wrote a little AAR here: http://www.playdiplomacy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=105&t=25938

Doubt on games created
Just created a game, and set it to wait for an hour because we were missing a player. A player joined, so it is full now, but it still says we have to wait 45 minutes. Why wait if the game is ready?
