Basically, I just got an assignment in Politics which is worth 10% of the year. To summarize (as to not bore you with minor details) there are 3 parts:

Part A:
1000-1250 word book review on Book A (The Prince) (Worth 60 marks, or ~18.75 words per mark.)

Part B:
1000-1250 word book review on Book B (Utopia) (Worth 60 marks, or ~18.75 words per mark)

Part C:
1250-1500 word essay on contrasting themes between the two books. Minimum of 3 quotations from each book required. (Worth 10 marks, or ~137.5 marks per word)

If my expected mark on the first two parts was ~90% for both of them (or 108/120) why would I bother (unless I actually want to get a 90%, which I would be satisfied with ~84%) writing the final part when:

A) It requires more work, while the first 2 parts on require broad themes and focus more on critiquing the book, the final part actually requires more in depth of the themes and more work required into reading the book as you need to provide relevant quotes.

B) It is worth very few marks, with 7.7% of the mark of this assignment and .77% of the final mark, compared to the 9.23% of the mark the other 2 parts of the assignment give.

Amen- What a terrible assignment
Fasces349 (0 DX)

I am not reading the rubric wrong. I talked to my friends who took the course last year, 1 of them came to the same conclusion as I did and didn't do Part C.

He got an 88% on the assignment. I, while at his house, compared to assignment sheet and rubric I have with the one he had, they are identical. The teacher either didn't notice or didn't care that there was a serious flaw in the rubric.

So this leads me back to the original question, do I do Part C and gun for a 90, or do I save me potentially 3-4 hours of my life (if not more) and lower my mark by up to 6.93%. Keeping in mind that by saying my mark will be lowered by 6.93% is assuming that if I did work on the final part, I would get 100%, say I get 80%, its only a 6.15% reduction and so on.

My point is, its a very tiny peace of my mark and will probably take me more time then the first 2 parts combined, so from an ethics perspective should I take advantage of this time saver, or should I do the work anyway, which in theory, would benefit me in the long run because it could increase my work ethic and do a better job at preparing me for university.

My teacher said she was giving a lot of seemingly pointless assignments that would help us in university when we get there. When she said that I didn't think she meant literally pointless assignments that the time saved by not doing them would make you better off as you could spend it doing the work on one of my other 5 courses which would give me more time to play diplomacy, Victoria 2, Civilization etc.

Do all three parts and make up for the extra time it will take by not posting on the forum anymore.

And why would I do that?

You see Fasces, it's about integrity and ambition. You, in this post, *exemplify* why left-wing socialism does not work: If I'm not going to be rewarded for my work, then why should I do it?

THIS is why innovation dies in socialist/communist societies, as contrasted to the innovation in capitalist societies.

Here is why you do the work, jackass: To learn. To test *yourself* regardless of the grade.

Clearly you are too stupid/arrogant to grasp the concept that it isn't *just* about the grade, but it is about proving something to yourself: that you are capable of succeeding and excelling, whether or not fucking morons like Santa agree that the assignment is asinine.

Here's clue: life is *full* of asinine assingments, and yet those are the things that pay your bills. If you are too arrogant and/or too stupid to do the tasks in life that you don't enjoy, then you will be a failure in most things in life.

Just do the fucking assignment and get over yourself. God forbid you extend yourself and do the assignment in total.

If I were the teacher and you turned in 2/3 of the assignment....given that ANY grade on written assignments is *subjective.*....I'd *fail* your ass.
Fasces349 (0 DX)
20 Sep 11 UTC
Actually the Rubric is pretty clear in what has to be done, and if I failed it I would complain to the VP and have a 3rd run at getting a teacher fired.

And Krellin, you have to make do with what system your in, in this point, I wont be IMHO adequately rewarded for my work if I do the full assignment so why should I bother? Your right in saying this is why socialism doesn't work, but the fact is, if I can live comfortable off the state, then why should I bother doing anything else.

I am pro-capitalism not because capitalism works for me, but because I know that if I had no motivation to work, I wouldn't work. At the moment if I can exploit the system to probably get me out of ~4 hours of work, then why shouldn't I do it?

Fasces, without realizing it, you completely back me up. If you aren't rewarded for it publicly, you won't do it, huh? In other words, you are the guys that throws his trash on the street if nobody is looking, becuase it won't be held against you, right? The guy that will keep the cash in a found wallet?

Sometimes you do something...like complete your assignment...because it is the right thing to do. So you found a loophole....and yet, you are probably there screaming at the top of your lungs if a corporation finds a loophold and fails to pay it's taxes.

You are a hypocrite...not to mention you are probably just lazy.

Again....this is a written assignment. I *guarantee* you that, if you sent me you 2/3 of a paper, I could *shred* that partial paper on content, grammar, structure, etc and fail your ass. And, if I were your teacher, i sure as hell would, just to teach you a lesson.

Arrogant, entitled youth need to learn a few lesson about *reality*.

I defy you to get a job and apply that same sort of lazy work ethic. You think you are getting away with something now...but your just proving you don't have what it takes to complete your work.

It's pathetic. I mean....for god's sake....it's what? 1200 words? You've probably posted that many arguing that you shouldn't do the work. That pretty much makes yo a dumbass.

Wrong, I am just lazy, the wallet is stealing and the trash endangers the environment.

"Sometimes you do something...like complete your assignment...because it is the right thing to do. So you found a loophole....and yet, you are probably there screaming at the top of your lungs if a corporation finds a loophold and fails to pay it's taxes."
True...

"You are a hypocrite...not to mention you are probably just lazy."
Lazy being the bigger factor.

"Arrogant, entitled youth need to learn a few lesson about *reality*."
Typical Krellin LOL!

"It's pathetic. I mean....for god's sake....it's what? 1200 words? You've probably posted that many arguing that you shouldn't do the work. That pretty much makes yo a dumbass."
508 words actually...

"My favorite classes had final exam worth 100% of your grade.
Talk about sphincter factor."
Given that my marks in exams range from 90-100 on almost everyone, but I do little HW during the year, I wish all my marks were like that...

"I can sort of understand reading The Prince for political study, a bit...maybe not all, just selections...

But Utopia as well?

The course is called Canadian and World Politics, its the only high school level course taught in high school.

The teacher decides which books we do, and quite frankly I don't approve. The other class is doing The Communist Manifesto and John Locke (I can ask a friend tomorrow which book, but I know its a Locke book) and personally I would much rather read about commies and Liberals then Trolls and Utopias when it comes to politics.
TC. You are NOT allowed to talk about sphincters until you tell me why you fucked my bitch!

While you're dealing with those books, might I suggest The Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes.
@Fascese359:Krellin is right. What you don't get is that you learn by doing; and, when you get it back marked, you'll learn (from the teacher) what parts of the assignment you got wrong too, so you don't make the same mistake twice. It's the part where you have to think for yourself rather than having someone else do the thinking for you.

That the most important part, which requires you to do the most work, also carries the least marks just shows that they expect you (and your classmates) to be mature/sensible enough to realise that it is the most important part.

Think of it as a mental filter in the teacher's mind, separating the hard working students from the lazy idiots and ask yourself which of those two groups the teacher will put the extra effort into in the future?
You should do it, just don't put any effort into it. Fluff up some crap so it actually looks like you put some work into it, but don't bother wasting any more time than you need to.

That is a good point, this is the first assignment of the year...

"You should do it, just don't put any effort into it. Fluff up some crap so it actually looks like you put some work into it, but don't bother wasting any more time than you need to."
So rather then reading the books to come up with good quotes I should just Google Utopia quotes....
> That is a good point, this is the first assignment of the year...
Don't tell your classmates. If they know they'll all do the assignment in full instead of taking the easy way out. Also the teacher will then have to find some other way to spot the dead wood.

Is it bad if, when I come to a situation where there are multiple CDs, I have the urge to draw rather than cancel, just to give those pricks a lesson in not joining a game if they know they aren't going to play or aren't able to play? I pride myself on not CDing anymore, because I had to learn my lesson the hard way. Why can't they?

Okay I wanna go really feminine on this thread how are we all feeling about relationships in the game? Why is it so hard in turn one to get any serious kind of relationship going, I mean you have to start by trusting someone right? Even though you're not exposing yourself to that person don't you need some plan at the start that you can work on?
