How much radiation is a Sievert? Here's a simple radiation chart (from XKCD)
Most of you know XKCD, so you know this is well worth reading: http://blog.xkcd.com/2011/03/19/radiation-chart/
The full size chart is here: http://xkcd.com/radiation/

Since diplomacy players are naturally smart...
Can anyone explain to me in practical terms why anything raised to the power of zero is equal to one? I understand that it's very convenient for algebraic reasons, and I kind of understand the logic and reasoning behind it, but I still can't get rid of the idea that, since 2^5 is defined as 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2, that 2^0 should have no definition because there are no numbers actually involved in it. I would have thought that it would fall into the category of zero denominators as non-real...

Champ Tourney ruined by lack of Internet Access-Request Rewind
http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=48367&msgCountryID=0

Can a Mod please check into the game? Austria's internet went down and he NMR'd, throwing the game to France. Any way we can have some sort of rewind or do-over? If this was an ordinary game, then oh well, shit happens. But this is supposed to be the Championship Tournament. Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Community College Students: "A Parasite!" Reactions?
http://www.kfiam640.com/mediaplayer/?station=KFI-AM&action=ondemand&item=20955349&feed_name=JohnandKen.xml

As a community college student...well, these folks are Right-of-the-Right Wing, and they CERTAINLY have some points which infuriate me, but I'll admit, they DO have one point I agree with...and it goes for ALL students...

Spirit of the game, or cheating?
In the spirit of ftf games, where spying is encouraged, and in postal games, where faking a letter from one person and sending a copy to another is fair play, what do you think of using technology to gather information?
MKECharlie (2074 D(G))
19 Mar 11 UTC
You could write a screen scraper to log into your own account every 5 minutes, view all non-anonymous games you're in, and log whether each opponent is online, and the status of their "orders entered" check marks.

It's nothing you couldn't do if you had nothing better to do yourself, but leverages technology to gather data on what your opponents are doing when you're not around. It could reveal alliances that you'd not otherwise notice, which is why it would be useful.
MKECharlie (2074 D(G))
19 Mar 11 UTC
If that seems legitimate, the following example may not be...
Have your program look at the user profiles of people you're playing with in an anonymous game, note when they are online, and cross-reference that data with when you get messages from those countries, to find out who is who.
Indybroughton (3407 D(G))

Good points, MKE. Technology is not good or bad itself, but the uses could be. If one used tech to figure out anon players' i.d.'s, essentially outwitting the intent of anonymous games......then the site could/might counter that (auto-sign on players at random times)....but would that be a profitable use of site resources?

On the other hand, using technology to harvest a player's most typical moves when in each country...is done in chess.... I would think that "it depends", based on the particular use.
figlesquidge (2131 D)

I would say that these things are bad and shouldn't be done.
MKECharlie (2074 D(G))

Interesting opinion. What brings you to that conclusion?
Draugnar (0 DX)

Automating functions that could be done by hand and aren't illegal (I.e. no sniffing for passwords) is perfectly fine so long as you don't crash the server do to hi bandwidth. At least that's my view. If Kestas says otherwise, thoug, then i'd listen to what he says.
Katsarephat (100 D)
19 Mar 11 UTC
I see nothing wrong with the first scenario-- in FtF of course you'll be watching who's talking to whom, and sometimes you can get an idea of when people are writing or rewriting their orders. The second scenario strikes me as clever but problematic, just because it's against the spirit of anonymous games.

I'd love to see options for faking press, personally (not in every game, but maybe as a standard option or as a variant).
MKECharlie (2074 D(G))
19 Mar 11 UTC
Faking press can be done here by cut & paste, with edits.
yebellz (729 D(G))
19 Mar 11 UTC
@MKECharlie, that's not forged (faked) press. That's just "forwarded press", which is anyways unreliable. In postal, one could go to the trouble of changing the return address, mimicking the handwriting, forging a signature, mailing from the spoof sender's postal area (to get the correct postmark), etc., to create a very convincing forged press.
yebellz (729 D(G))

Anon means anon, trying to figure out who's playing who is against that rule.
Katsarephat (100 D)
19 Mar 11 UTC
@MKECharlie: In this case, I mean if I'm Germany, I might want to send a message to England that looks completely like it's from France, even to the point where the new message would appear to be from France (i.e., appear in the France message tab).
figlesquidge (2131 D)
19 Mar 11 UTC
I just think that trying to go round the system isn't on. Yes I know its allowed in face to face (and even then only if you're all that way inclined) but just doesn't feel right for here.

MKECharlie (2074 D(G))
19 Mar 11 UTC
For the record, I always thought my second example (figuring out who's who in an anonymous game) seemed beyond the pale. I don't see how it gives someone that much of an advantage anyway, but does seem to be against the spirit of anonymous games. If you want to know who's who, play a non-anon game.

@yebellz, @Katsarephat: Agreed re: forged vs. forwarded press. Good distinction.
@Figlesquidge, @Draugnar: Thanks for your input.

Also for the record, I didn't write these programs.
I might have stalked someone at the computer lab at school and changed his password, though.

Better yet, band and unban them so they lose all their points and have to revisit their games before the turn runs!
MKECharlie (2074 D(G))

Just joking, figlesquidge. It was that other thread that got me thinking about these ideas, but I thought I'd start a new one instead of hijacking that thread.

Is this a legitimate tactic?
I was in a high stakes, 3 days/turn game playing France and I kinda figured from some comments made that England was probably at the same college as me so I started staking out the computer labs to see if I could find out who it was.

My bracket dreams are already broken
This forum post contains no insightful comments, philosophical points or deep strategy tips on MAO. I am wasting the community's collective time to say that, with less than two days of the NCAA men's basketball tournament under our belts, my bracket is already a hopeless shambles. For the sixth time in six years I am on track to lose to my in-laws in our little pool. It is a really good thing that I don't have a sports gambling addiction . . .
