How much radiation is a Sievert? Here's a simple radiation chart (from XKCD)
Most of you know XKCD, so you know this is well worth reading: http://blog.xkcd.com/2011/03/19/radiation-chart/
The full size chart is here: http://xkcd.com/radiation/
Be sure to read the disclaimer at the bottom of the chart.

Since diplomacy players are naturally smart...
Can anyone explain to me in practical terms why anything raised to the power of zero is equal to one? I understand that it's very convenient for algebraic reasons, and I kind of understand the logic and reasoning behind it, but I still can't get rid of the idea that, since 2^5 is defined as 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2, that 2^0 should have no definition because there are no numbers actually involved in it. I would have thought that it would fall into the category of zero denominators as non-real...

Champ Tourney ruined by lack of Internet Access-Request Rewind
http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=48367&msgCountryID=0

Can a Mod please check into the game? Austria's internet went down and he NMR'd, throwing the game to France. Any way we can have some sort of rewind or do-over? If this was an ordinary game, then oh well, shit happens. But this is supposed to be the Championship Tournament. Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Community College Students: "A Parasite!" Reactions?
http://www.kfiam640.com/mediaplayer/?station=KFI-AM&action=ondemand&item=20955349&feed_name=JohnandKen.xml

As a community college student...well, these folks are Right-of-the-Right Wing, and they CERTAINLY have some points which infuriate me, but I'll admit, they DO have one point I agree with...and it goes for ALL students...

Just a Minute
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00yyd36/Just_a_Minute_Series_59_Episode_4/

If anyone wants to sample a bit of British radio comedy, this programme is of the finest there is. I really love this show, please take a listen - I hope you enjoy it too! :)

I'll have to check that out more often. The "fishing" catagory was rather hilarious.

This show has been running since I was a kid (I'm in my 50's now) and the presenter (Nicholas Parsons) has appeared in every show - sometimes replacing a contestant who was late and, sometimes, just for a laugh. Nicholas Parsons is 87 now and still going strong.

Glad you liked it trip! :)

@SpeakerToAliens: I'm 24 and I really like the show too - it can run and run. Are you British? Nicholas Parsons is great - him and Paul Merton really make the show for me. Sheila Hancock is great too.

The BBC is kind enough to podcast The Now Show and The News Quiz to keep ex-pats like me connected to Radio 4 comedy but I wish they would do the same with Just A Minute and I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue. Do they really make enough money from selling CDs to justify restricting access to digital media? And aren't they obscure enough globally that podcasting them might actually increase revenue from CD sales?

Really? You can't listen to it, have you tried using the link I sent you? My father does not lives outside of Europe and he can access BBC Radio on iPlayer. The radio iplayer is supposed to be fully international.

@Sarg: I can listen to it on the web - it would just be more convenient to download it onto an MP3 player as a podcast. Fussy me!

I listened to the two episodes I could easily find on the site... Really enjoyed it. I love British humor.

How often is this on?
@Katsarephat - a rule of thumb is that the Beeb tend to run radio shows in 6 week-ish (sometimes very ish) chunks and then they put something different on in the same slot. some perennial favourites that come round often are "Just a Minute", "I'm Sorry I haven't a Clue", "The News Quiz" and "The Now Show". Also good, though different is "Old Harry's Game" - a soap, set in Hell.

BBC Radio is full of good comedy like this. British TV does a pretty good line in comedy panel shows too: Everyone is probably familiar with "Have I Got News For You?" but I also love "Would I Lie To You?" and "Mock The Week". And obviously best of all is the wonderful, brilliant "Shooting Stars".

@Jamiet99uk: 'Have I Got News For You?' is great!

Athough, unfortunately - BBC iplayer only allows radio content to be accessed abroad - there are talks of allowing people to access TV content abroad if they pay a monthly fee though.
@Sargmacher, et. al. - I have a errr <cough>relative<cough>, who lives in a country not entirely unlike Spain, who has ...<cough> heard ... that there are ... erm... <cough>mythical<cough> ... web sites that disguise your IP address and make it look like you're in the UK when you want to access BBC iPlayer in full <cough><cough>... allegedly... perhaps... maybe...<cough>. Of course, that's probably just a rumour and he might be having me on or maybe I miss-understood when he said he can really watch/listen to all BBC programs on iPlayer whilst in Spain, but I couldn't possibly comment<cough><cough>allegedly<cough>.

Latest Episode for you all to listen to: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00zf9tf/Just_a_Minute_14_03_2011/

Please take a listen!

@SpeakerToAliens: What programme/web site (erm...*cough* :) do you use that works to let you watch a full TV episode on BBC iplayer? Would be very interested to know!
I use my University VPN when abroad - works like a treat - but would be nice to know a good alternative if there is one.

Sargmacher (0 DX)
15 Mar 11 UTC
'Just A Minute' airs Mondays at 6.30pm GMT and you can listen live in BBC iPlayer.

The programme is then available on the BBC iPlayer website for a week to listen to or download. The link for the current episode is:

what's bump mean?
Sargmacher (0 DX)

'Bumping' allows the bumper to bump a particular thread to the top of the forum, bringing (or bumping, as it were) the thread back to public attention.

BBC Radio 4 has a comedy program (to some degree) every day at 1830.
Monday & Friday are the best nights with (Just a minute or Im Sorry I haven't a clue) and (Now Show or News Quiz) respectively.

Also to note, we enter BST very soon!

Spirit of the game, or cheating?
In the spirit of ftf games, where spying is encouraged, and in postal games, where faking a letter from one person and sending a copy to another is fair play, what do you think of using technology to gather information?

Is this a legitimate tactic?
I was in a high stakes, 3 days/turn game playing France and I kinda figured from some comments made that England was probably at the same college as me so I started staking out the computer labs to see if I could find out who it was.

My bracket dreams are already broken
This forum post contains no insightful comments, philosophical points or deep strategy tips on MAO. I am wasting the community's collective time to say that, with less than two days of the NCAA men's basketball tournament under our belts, my bracket is already a hopeless shambles. For the sixth time in six years I am on track to lose to my in-laws in our little pool. It is a really good thing that I don't have a sports gambling addiction . . .
