It can be hard getting your foot in the door akilies, but clearly if you're willing to go to something like that, have a bad experience but keep going through it, and benefit from the experience you'll have no trouble

I agree with Draugnar that people shouldn't make silly assumptions, but that includes the assumption that it's exceptional to work hard and do well for yourself

I think the idea that people vary in character from generation to generation is odd

thanks kestas- i'm obviously gonna keep trying to stick my foot in doors. I know something will pop up eventually.

Yeah assumptions, Draugnar can sit here and judge all other people for their supposed lack of work ethic, but when the shoe's on the other foot he's absolutely outraged. Only Draugnar is allowed to make assumptions about other people's lives and only Draugnar is allowed to have absolutely zero capacity for empathy for compassion.

kestas - I don't think hard work is the exception. If it were we would have far more people on welfare. People are, generally speaking, industrious and hard working. They want the dream (and it isn't just the "American" dream) and they will work to get it.

Putin - I don't judge people for a lack of work ethic. I judge slackers who are satisfied with welfare and would rather not work. If someone is working, they are contributing and I applaud that. I support programs that take care of those who can't care for themselves. I've yet to vote against a MR/DD levy anywhere I've lived and I give to several charities. If kids come by my house, I support all their fundraisers and donate the cookies and candy to the food cupboard at church. I just don't believe in hand outs for the lazy. If a person is infirm and can't work, be it a physical or mental issue, I'm all for supporting them fully. But those who can work should.

I have not gone on unemployment and have no intention of doing so as long as I have money in reserve (about 3 months worth right now) and I spend several hours every day following up with the various consulting firms and recruiters with whom I have well established relationships. I will have a new job long before then. And if I get into March and still nothing is on the horizon (there are three possible positions right now I'm under consideration for, so not likely), I will go work at Best Buy on the Geek Squad if need be.

There are jobs out there, at least where I live, but some people don't want to work, and others refuse to do that which they consider "menial." I am neither of the above. And I expect people to be the same in their personal ethics. Most are, but those who aren't don't deserve our assistance.

"There are jobs out there, at least where I live"

Good for you. Other areas aren't so lucky.

"Most are, but those who aren't don't deserve our assistance."

Those who've never struggled don't get to cast judgment on those who do.

And you arrogant rich people never bitch so much when big companies get tax breaks or avoid taxes altogether. It's only milking the system if a handful of poor people do it.

someone i know typed this as an introduction to an essay he wrote in an economics class and idk if it has anything to do with what everyone is saying but i thought id share it anyway.

How Taxes Work . . .
Let's put tax cuts in terms everyone can understand. Suppose that every day, ten men go out for dinner. The bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:
The first four men — the poorest — would pay nothing; the fifth would pay $1, the sixth would pay $3, the seventh $7, the eighth $12, the ninth $18, and the tenth man — the richest — would pay $59.
That's what they decided to do. The ten men ate dinner in the restaurant every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement — until one day, the owner threw them a curve (in tax language a tax cut).
"Since you are all such good customers," he said, "I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily meal by $20." So now dinner for the ten only cost $80.00.
The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes. So the first four men were unaffected. They would still eat for free. But what about the other six — the paying customers? How could they divvy up the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his "fair share?"
The six men realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would end up being PAID to eat their meal. So the restaurant owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.
And so the fifth man paid nothing, the sixth pitched in $2, the seventh paid $5, the eighth paid $9, the ninth paid $12, leaving the tenth man with a bill of $52 instead of his earlier $59. Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to eat for free.
But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings. "I only got a dollar out of the $20," declared the sixth man who pointed to the tenth. "But he got $7!"
"Yeah, that's right," exclaimed the fifth man, "I only saved a dollar, too . . . It's unfair that he got seven times more than me!".
"That's true!" shouted the seventh man, "why should he get $7 back when I got only $2? The wealthy get all the breaks!"
"Wait a minute," yelled the first four men in unison, "We didn't get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!"
The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up. The next night he didn't show up for dinner, so the nine sat down and ate without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered, a little late what was very important. They were FIFTY-TWO DOLLARS short of paying the bill! Imagine that!
And that, boys and girls, journalists and college instructors, is how the tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up at the table anymore.
Where would that leave the rest? Unfortunately, most taxing authorities anywhere cannot seem to grasp this rather straightforward logic

@Putin - making $80K in salary and another $25K in investements (which I bought, not inherited) and side jobs does not make me rich. My wife doesn't work so that is our total household income. While, yes, my salary alone is well above the median income, most households at our level are two income households. What I wouldn't give for another 30-35K...
Putin33 (111 D)

Maltizok - that is not at all how taxes work. In your scheme, the only taxes anybody supposedly pays are income taxes. Of course you forget the myriad of other taxes, including and especially payroll taxes. In fact it only applies to the first 106,000 of income, so anything over that isn't taxed. So the rich pay a far lower percentage of their income to Social Security, Medicare, etc than average people do.

You also forget sales taxes, which apply across the board and disproportionately affect those with minimal disposable income and those who spend a higher proportion of their budget on essentials.

And you also forget that the rich make a lot of money off of investments, the taxes on which are a complete joke and keep getting reduced.

In the end in terms of taxes paid (Bank of America paid zero in taxes), we have a highly highly regressive tax system.

And frankly I don't get why an 18 year old would be so aggrieved about the supposed plight of the rich re: taxes. Much too young to be a reactionary.

And the median household income in the United States is $50K, so your income alone is double the median household income. The median income for two earners 65K, so you're well in excess of that as well.

I am not too fluent in German at all... in fact, I have only taken 3 years of it. I would like to start a game in which only German can be spoken even considering my lack of German skills. I want to try to keep my skills sharp and possibly learn more of the language while playing an awesome game. Anyone interested?

Every political argument I have ever been to on this site, It has ended up boiling down to this, and the same points are made every time. Lets create this thread to reference them from now on. And so whenever this debate gets brought up in another topic. We can just link people here, and keep it all in one thread.
